So You Think You Know Historical Trivia?

I'm rerunning the blog about the trivia regarding our colonial forefathers. Hope you enjoy these tidbits.

HISTORICAL TRIVIA
This infamous picture was painted to commemorate Washington's visit to Charleston, South Carolina. A famous painter was hired to paint the founding father. It turns out when presented with the portrait that the General was not pleased. In fact, he insisted it be painted two more times detailing what he wanted changed. The final portrait was completed after Washington had returned home. The aggravated painter showed our founding father with the back end of the horse. I wonder why.

( This tidbit came from the Charleston tours, but all the rest is courtesy of Larriane. Knowing her research methods, I'd say they stand more of a chance of being accurate than the evening news.)
*********************************
In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted.  Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms.  Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted.  Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more.  Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.'   (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint)
******************************
As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs.   Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes.   The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig... ' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.
    *********************************
In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor.   Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal.. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge.  They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.'
*********************************
Personal hygiene left much room for improvement.. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions.  When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.'  Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'.  In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . .. . Therefore, the expression 'losing face.'
*********************************
Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in 'straight laced' wore a tightly tied lace..
*********************************
Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades...'  To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead.  Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck..'
********************************
Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars.  They were told to 'go sip some Ale and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times.  'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.'
**********************************
At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming.  She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the phrase 'minding your 'P's and Q's'.
**********************************
Did you know the saying "God willing and the Creek don't rise" was in reference to the Creek Indians and not a body of water?  It was written by Benjamin Hawkins in the late 18th century.  He was a politician and Indian diplomat.  While in the south, Hawkins was requested by the President of the U.S. to return to Washington .  In his response, he was said to write, "God willing and the Creek don't rise."  Because he capitalized the word "Creek" it is deduced that he was referring to the Creek Indian tribe and not a body of water.

One more: bet you didn't know this!
In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls.  It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck?   The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.  Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.  There was only one problem....how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations.  However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few  landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey; Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.)

Working Your Free Book

This is an updated version of my original October post. I finished a free book giveaway at Christmas and I forgot a few basic things! Holidays are not a good time for giveaways because those you depend on for promotions have  plans too. Often, potential readers are too busy engaged in family and festive gatherings to search for free books. Amazon analytics show the most downloads occur from Wednesday to Sunday.

As an author, I thought if you offered your book free, thousands of downloads would naturally happen. It does happen if you're one of the best selling authors, but even those people do their prep work or someone else does it for them. This where a virtual assistant comes in handy.

Today, there are over 62,822 free books available on Amazon. This is low compared to previous days I’ve been on the site. How will people even know your book exists?

Titles are important.

Include a keyword to make your story searchable.

Ex: Ghost stories- use ghost

Ex: Westerns- old west, western, cowboy

Ex: wolf shifters- Wolf, wolves, pack, alpha, and shifter

Subtitles also help people search.

Your story might be Helena’s Promise, which tells the searcher nothing, but could be subtitled a paranormal Druid romance. People who are looking for paranormal, Druids, and romance will be directed to your book.

Timing is also important.

Some people decide to offer their book free for a month or longer. What this does is convey that your book isn’t special and there is no rush to get it.  Kindle Direct offer you a five-day giveaway. Start on a Wednesday and end on a Sunday. Amazon analytics shows this as your prime time. If downloads are extremely high, you might stop at day three. Beware if you advertised it would be free for five days and you stop early some people will feel tricked.

Some authors leave one books free for weeks, even months in hopes of getting more recognition. This might work better with a short story you'd probably have  a harder time selling. There's no real revenue loss. This also works better  if you have several books out already too. Keep in mind, the idea is to wet the reader's palate for most of your tales. Hard to do, if you only have one book out and no new book in sight.

The Reviews

Reviews matter. I received my list from Digital Books Today, which includes the top 100 free books for the week. Sometime, I don't even look at it because I have too much to do, but today I did.  I chose immediately my favorite authors, genres I wanted to get know better, and a couple unknow authors.

The reviews did influence me. Someone who only had five star reviews meant she traded reviews. Face it; James Patterson, Nora Roberts and Stephen King get bad reviews. Those who had about the same five star and one star reviews I passed on too. Often I read the one star reviews to see what the problem was. If it started with I wanted to like this book, or this was the worst book I've ever read, I disregareded because it was a troll review.  Sometimes, I click on the reviewer to see if she ever liked anything in her life. If I discover we actually like similar books, then it validates her review.

A nice mix of reviews is good too. With over 100 free books to pick from, I chose twelve, four from fav authors, three from genre preference, and and five more from unknown to me authors.  Obviously, they were all free books, but some genres I don't read. Others had overused title names often hoping to link to a more popular author. Bland burbs and uninteresting covers are another turn-off, but in the end, the reviews mattered most when I didn't know an author.

Promotions

You have to tell people you’re going to offer your book free. I picked up some of these tips and part of the list from Arthur Crandon’s book, Giveaways the Ultimate ‘How to’ Guide.  This short book is well worth reading.

Here are some places you could list your books. Most of these are blogs, so don’t expect to contact the owner the day before to place your book. Make sure your book fits too. Some do charge small fees for listing your book. At the time of this blog 1/24/15 all these pages/sites were live.

Tweeting

Join a Tweet Tribe. This is a group that retweets your tweets. You'll have to retweet theirs too. The benefit is a larger geographic reach and time zones. (Most want you to have at least 500-1000 followers and be recommended. Many want you to only tweet book related material. I'm in ASMSG, Author Tweeting Authors, Twitter Marketing. You can look up these groups on Facebook.)

Ask any group, you're already a part of to retweet your tweet. Make sure to do the same for members. It takes me about 30-45 minutes daily to retweet other members tweets.

Don’t underestimate the power of the tweet, but be careful not to say buy my book. It is best to write in the third person.

Example: Revelation, a riveting paranormal romance, is now free on Smashwords. Always include live links.

Hashtags help the reader find your book. The book above could use the tags #paranormal #free #romance #freekindle  #giveaway

Change up your tweets too. People tend to ignore the same tweets and sometime Twitter identifies it as spam and deletes it.

Always include a photo this makes people stop and look. Make sure you own the photo. This prevents nasty legal issues. Your book cover, stock photos you bought, free images, or photos you took all work.

Pinterest
Pinterest gives you the best rate of your promo to be seen. Pin your blogs, your book cover. Don’t have a Pinterest site. It is time to get one. Make sure you start following people.  Follow those with similar interests to your book. There are several freebies sites on Pinterest too.

 Blogging
Prepare to blog on all your free days. It is another way to get the news out. Make sure to have an easy button on your site to reach the free book. Contact associates to feature your blogs.

FIVERR
I used  Fiverr on my last free book.  It helped me reach a much wider audience for about $15. I reccomend doing this a week in advance.

FACEBOOK
Facebook offers you the option to boost your post. I've tried this on different occasions and saw a very minimal increase in downloads for the price I paid. Would not recommend.  You're better off sharing on genre sites.

Book Tours
Plan your free book offer while you're on a tour. Your hosts and touring company will help drive traffic to your free book.

Holiday & Seasonal Linking
Books about Christmas, Thanksgiving, Summer works best before the holiday or season. Not too much interest in the swimsuit diet in the middle of the summer.

Book Signings
The great thing about book signings is meeting people. Not everyone is ready to buy your book, but they will try it out if you have a coupon for a free book, short story, or free chapters.

The Waiting Game
Lucky you, 2000+ people downloaded your free book, but only six reviews and two were lousy.People who 'buy' free books, tend to pick up dozens and it takes them a while to read them, some never do.

The Luck of the Weissensteiners (Three Nations Trilogy Book 1)

In the sleepy town of Bratislava in 1933 a romantic girl falls for a bookseller from Berlin. Greta Weissensteiner, daughter of a Jewish weaver, slowly settles in with the Winkelmeier clan just as the developments in Germany start to make waves in Europe and re-draws the visible and invisible borders. The political climate in the multifaceted cultural jigsaw puzzle of disintegrating Czechoslovakia becomes more complex and affects relations between the couple and the families. The story follows them through the war with its predictable and also its unexpected turns and events and the equally hard times after.

But this is no ordinary romance; in fact it is not a romance at all, but a powerful, often sad, Holocaust story. What makes The Luck of the Weissensteiners so extraordinary is the chance to consider the many different people who were never in concentration camps, never in the military, yet who nonetheless had their own indelible Holocaust experiences. This is a wide-ranging, historically accurate exploration of the connections between social location, personal integrity and, as the title says, luck.

Sebastian (Three Nations Trilogy Book 2)

Sebastian is the story of a young man who has his leg amputated before World War I. When his father is drafted to the war it falls on to him to run the family grocery store in Vienna, to grow into his responsibilities, bear loss and uncertainty and hopefully find love.
Sebastian Schreiber, his extended family, their friends and the store employees experience the ‘golden days’ of pre-war Vienna and the timed of the war and the end of the Monarchy while trying to make a living and to preserve what they hold dear.
Fischer convincingly describes life in Vienna during the war, how it affected the people in an otherwise safe and prosperous location, the beginning of the end for the Monarchy, the arrival of modern thoughts and trends, the Viennese class system and the end of an era.
As in the first part of the trilogy, “The Luck of The Weissensteiners” we are confronted again with themes of identity, Nationality and borders. The step back in time made from Book 1 and the change of location from Slovakia to Austria enables the reader to see the parallels and the differences deliberately out of the sequential order. This helps to see one not as the consequence of the other, but to experience them as the momentary reality as it must have felt for the people at the time.

The Black Eagle Inn (Three Nations Trilogy Book 3)

The Black Eagle Inn is an old established Restaurant and Farm business in the sleepy Bavarian countryside outside of Heimkirchen.  Childless Anna Hinterberger has fought hard to make it her own and keep it running through WWII. Religion and rivalry divide her family as one of her nephews, Markus has got her heart and another nephew, Lukas got her ear. Her husband Herbert is still missing and for the wider family life in post-war Germany also has some unexpected challenges in store.

Once again Fischer tells a family saga with war in the far background and weaves the political and religious into the personal. Being the third in the Three Nations Trilogy this book offers another perspective on war, its impact on people and the themes of nations and identity.

Conditions

When Charles and Tony's mother dies the estranged brothers must struggle to pick up the pieces, particularly so given that one of them is mentally challenged and the other bitter about his place within the family.
The conflict is drawn out over materialistic issues, but there are other underlying problems which go to the heart of what it means to be part of a family which, in one way or another. has cast one aside.
Prejudice, misconceptions and the human condition in all forms feature in this contemporary drama revolving around a group of people who attend the subsequent funeral at the British South Coast.
Meet flamboyant gardener Charles, loner Simon, selfless psychic Elaine, narcissistic body-builder Edgar, Martha and her version of unconditional love and many others as they try to deal with the event and its aftermath.

He moved to Hamburg in pursuit of his studies and to lead a life of literary indulgence. After a few years he moved on to the UK where he now lives in a small hamlet, not far from Bath.  He and his partner have three Labradoodles to complete their family.

Christoph worked for the British Film Institute, in Libraries, Museums and for an airline. ‘The Luck of The Weissensteiners’ was published in November 2012; 'Sebastian' in May 2013 and The Black Eagle Inn in October 2013. "Time To Let Go" , his first contemporary work was published in May 2014, and “Conditions” in October 2014. Bad Reviews Can be Good!

Why a Bad Review Can be Good News

It’s not usual to see on my personal Facebook page a fellow writer bemoaning a bad review. Often the writer will even post the link to a bad review so friends can take a few swipes at the review too. Did you ever think a bad review could actually work in your favor?  I didn’t until recently.

1.       Makes it real. Check Amazon reviews for New York Times Best Selling Authors. I did with Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes. The book earned every star imaginable with 123 one-star scathing reviews. About half of 4,860 reviews were 5-stars, which confirmed fans didn’t automatically grant the award-winning writer 5-stars for simply publishing a book.

2.       Amazon tends to yank reviews as bogus if a book only has five stars reviews. Often it is hard to believe an unknown author who self publishes a book automatically has 50 perfect 5-star reviews off the bat, especially if they aren’t verified purchases and tend to be vague with statements including best book I’ve ever read in my life and couldn’t put it down. Now, I’ve heard other writers complain Amazon took down legitimate reviews because there was none under five stars in the group.

3.       Bad reviews often tell what the person thought the book needed. I’m actually appreciative of a Goodreads review that specified I didn’t include enough backstory about the hero.   If you allow it, a less than glowing, but insightful review can make you a better writer.

4.       If a person actually read the book, the review should reflect what they didn’t like about it. A friend who writes steamy romances received a one-star review with comments that the book was full of sex  in every chapter, hot, steamy, kinky sex, and the woman had to finish the entire book to see if got any less sexy. It didn’t. Ironically, that bad review shot up her sales.

5.       After your anger dissipates, re-read the review and see what the reviewer really stated. I received a one-star review from a reviewer who received my book free because she thought it was too expensive. I actually passed this info onto my publisher who lowered the price some. Once I stumbled past the one star, the reviewer actually liked the book.

6.       Reviews are opinions and not everyone will like your book. Ever. It helps other people who may have similar tastes to pick out the book that best suits them. Bad reviews come from bad fits more often than truly awful books.

7.        What about the bogus bad reviews? Sure, there are trolls out there who often download free books, never read them, and give concise reviews with insightful tidbits such as: this book sucks, could have been written by a second-grader, and I wanted to like this book, but…  Most serious readers (people who buy books) are looking for more detail than that.

8.       Consider the source. When reading Amazon reviews, you can click on the reviewer to see previous reviews. You may discover the reviewer gave almost everything one or two stars. The ability to rate something gives the common person power.

9.       Review magazine, newspapers, and even review companies like Kirkus Reviews hold more weight than Lois in Des Moines who referred to your book as self-indulgent, myopic pseudo literature.

10.   There are people who never read reviews. Never. They judge a book on the previous book. Keep writing.

11.   Many famous authors never read reviews. I rubbed elbows at a Monte Carlo night with a favorite author who admitted she didn’t read reviews because it would influence what she was writing. Obviously, you can’t change your writing style to please an unhappy reviewer.

In retrospect, let’s consider everyday life here. Do you discontinue going to your favorite restaurant because it received a bad review? Probably not. In the end, we would like the good reviews to outnumber the bad ones. The real question is what motivates a person to buy a book.

Often I buy a book because

·         I heard the author speak in a public forum.

·         It’s about a subject that interests me.

·         It’s in my genre.

·         Recommended by an author I liked.

·         Liked the cover.

·         It was free.

·         It was a gift.

·         We sat next to each other at a book signing.

·         I wanted to explore the genre.

·         Heard an author interview on the radio.

·         Amazon recommendation

·         Blog hops

·         Tweets

Today, I was checking a book order on Amazon. I noticed I have bought 39 books in less than six months. I think that makes me a decent customer, but not once did I buy a book due to a review, good or bad. Something to consider when faced with a bad review.

 photo Pretty_Hot_Final_zps752e5806.jpg

Synopsis

A charming playboy. A girl on the run from love. An exotic location where the weather isn’t the only thing that’s hot.

Kate Saunders is sure of only one thing as her flight to her new life lands in Dubai: short of joining a convent, her new job teaching at a conservative all-female school is just what she needs. Until she meets Kai, that is.

Cultured and worldly, Kai lives a life of wealth and privilege where he always gets what he wants. And what he wants next is Kate. He's determined their relationship is only going one place: his bed.

The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but it’s also littered with underwear when Kate struggles to resist his sweet, filthy mouth. Talented of tongue he may be, but he’s also not quite who seems to be. Kate’s life is about to take a turn for the complicated, making the one she left behind look easy.

Excerpt

‘Well, when eight-year-olds make you feel small, heels are the only answer,’ I retort. ‘And I like nice shoes.’
Lazily pushing himself from the door surround, he saunters to my desk set at the front of the room. Almost lounging against it, he stretches his long legs out in front. Each facing the opposite direction, we’re shoulder to shoulder and almost touching as an electrical force dances in the air. I’ve never been more grateful for the curtain of my hair as he leans in, leans closer, then peers exaggeratedly down at my feet, his voice seeming to drop a full octave.
‘You most certainly do.’
Grabbing papers from my desk, I continue shoving them into my bag in an effort to avoid acknowledging the large, hot presence at my side. ‘Is this a social call or are you actually here for something?’ My tone could be described as arsey at best.
‘Pleasure, definitely.’ I think he’s still staring at my shoes, though I’m fairly certain it’s not a covetous thing. ‘I’m here to call in a debt.’
‘Oh?’ Pushing my hair behind my ears, my eyes rise in enquiry. He’s an accountant then?
‘Your rain-check. I’m here to take you for coffee.’
‘Coffee?’
‘That’s correct. A word of two syllables. A social lubricant.’
I swallow, hopefully not audibly. ‘With you?’
‘You’re enthusiasm knows no bounds,’ he replies in a tone as dry as toast.
‘But that’s . . . that’s not a debt.’
‘A promise is most certainly a debt,’ he teases warmly. But there’s something else there in his words, an undercurrent of steel causing goose bumps to break out across my arms. A man who’s unused to being turned down.
‘I didn’t promise.’ Eyes down, I continue my bag filling quest. ‘And I really don’t think it would be a good idea.’
‘The promise was definitely implied.’
‘I think you’ll find it was inferred,’ I reply with a snort. Great. So now I snort.
‘And,’ he adds, ignoring me, ‘you seem far too nice a person to hurt my feelings. As for it being a good idea, how do you know without trying?’
‘I don’t think I need to try you.’ I wish I could swallow the words at once; press rewind, suck them back in.
‘I come with a satisfaction guarantee.’
‘That’s not what I mean,’ I add quickly.
‘Just coffee,’ he replies, now sounding sincere. ‘Nothing nefarious. I promise.’
‘Sorry. Like I said, I’m busy. Flat out.’
‘Interesting choice of words. But busy . . . sharpening . . . copious amounts of pencils?’ Lifting the almost industrial sized electric sharpener out of my hands, he turns it in his own. It’s about then that I notice the almost bare surface of my desk. ‘A serious business, I’m sure.’
As I raise my head, his gaze hits mine, serious eyes staring down. I’ve suddenly run out of words, every beat of my heart pounding so hard, it has to be audible.
Placing the sharpener back, he stands.
‘I’ll even carry your bag.’
‘You’re pretty full of yourself.’
Smiling lopsidedly, his eyes travel the length of my body again. ‘You know what they say, one minute a cock.’
‘And the next just a bit of a dick,’ I mutter.
‘Ouch.’ He laughs softly, rubbing a hand across his delightfully stubbled chin. ‘I believe the aphorism goes, and the next a feather duster . . .’ He sounds almost hurt as his words trail away.
Oh, bugger. So much for not mistaking his intent. ‘I didn’t mean—’
‘To injure my pride?’ His tone matches a perfectly arched brow.
‘No! Of course not. I don’t even know you, I wouldn’t presume—’
‘You can tell me how sorry you are over that drink.’
Not that upset, then. ‘I told you, I can’t. Coffee or otherwise.’
‘Can’t or won’t?’
‘Does it matter?’ I ask, exasperation and my hands rising before me.
‘Boyfriend, girlfriend? Significant other?’
‘Girl? What, because I’m not interested, I’m gay?’ My face burns and all I can think is what says gay about me today? Surely this isn’t the right response.
‘I didn’t say you weren’t interested. Reluctant, but interested,’ he asserts, masking a smile. ‘Are you seeing anyone?’
‘I don’t see what it has to do with you.’
‘Obstacles, Kate,’ he says suddenly serious. Like an egg and spoon race or the one in the sack? No, the one with the sack! ‘I like to know where I stand.’
‘Why should I be interested in where you hang? Stand! I mean stand.’ My eyes flick involuntarily to where they shouldn’t before darting away. Interested, so interested but reluctant, he got that right.
‘To the left, if you feel you must know, and slightly—’
‘Is this how you talk to women you barely know?’ Talk about degeneration.
‘I think you must be a bad influence.’
‘And I think you must be delusional,’ I retort, straightening my blouse.
‘Because I’m back to being a prick, it seems.’
He exhales audibly, ruffling a hand through his gorgeous hair, not that I noticed at all. As he falls silent, I tip my head to peer at him, fascinated by the conflicting emotions playing and fading across his face: exasperation, annoyance and eventually, a hesitant sort of confusion.
‘What have you got to lose?’
Dignity? Pride? Undies?
His hand rises quite suddenly between us as he runs the tip of one finger against my face. He’s so close that for a mad moment, I think he’s going to kiss me, my breath halting as desire, swift and treacherous, blooms inside. He’s going to kiss me and I think I’m going to let him. Then his hand lowers, sort of hesitantly, before plucking one of the humiliatingly many pencils sticking from the top of my bag. He begins to write on my yellow notepad, the only item left on my desk. As pen touches paper, his finger sparkles in the light, sprinkled with glitter.
‘My number,’ he murmurs, placing the folded paper in my hand. ‘Think about it. You owe me for saving you, at least.’
‘Why do I feel you’re not going to leave me alone until I say yes?’ My voice is soft, lacking in strength and conviction as I stare at the folded note.
‘Because you’re a very astute judge of character.’
A smile leaks from his tone as he turns to leave, his words echoing in the empty room. Staring at the paper in my hand, my heart sinks. I fold it once more and tear it in half, because I know his words couldn’t be farther from the truth.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I can honestly say it won't be my last. She is a fantastic writer and captures your attention and pulls you right in. ~ AJ’s Book Reviews

5*
Witty banter? Check! Humor? Check! Exotic location? Check! Steamy sex scenes? CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!!!!
Donna Alam has found the perfect recipe for a funny and sexy story and shows plenty of promise for her additional books in the “Pretty” series. Not only are the conversations between naïve Kate and hot, hot and worldly Kai (did I mention he’s hot?) smart and funny, but the sexual tension --- and release --- is combustible! ~ Goodreads Review

4.5*
The story had a real mix of funny moments, intense sexual encounters and flirty banter while laying the foundations for a great story to continue on in the next book in the series. While a mind-blowing and explosive episode to Kai and Kate's relationship brings us to the end of book one we are also left wanting more ~ Nice & Naughty Book Blog

Prologue

"Daddy, you can't do this!" I screamed at my father as he threw my belongings into a suitcase. "Daddy, please!"
He didn't look at me, he just continued hurriedly. I had known my Father was in too deep with some not so nice people, but I had never imagined he would use his own daughter as collateral in a deal that had now gone sour. I was his child, his blood; my little brother Devon and I were all he had. Our mother had passed away 5 years ago and we had stuck by each other solidly. His struggles with money had only started in the past year as his gambling and drug addiction worsened. It had quickly consumed him as the more we struggled, the deeper he dove into his dodgy dealings, bets and card games with high powered people while I stayed at home, making sure my 16 year old brother got to school on time, got fed and kept out of trouble. At 20 I was his surrogate parent.
Unbeknown to me, last night he had gone on a bender and joined a poker game with some of the richest men known in the neighbouring cities. He was running out of things to place on the table and after he lost our small house that we had bought with my mother’s life insurance, I thought he would have walked away. But here I was pleading with all my heart for him to not let them take me after he placed on the table his only daughter.
"He will look after you, which is more than what I can do." He muttered quietly, still unable to look me in the eye. Tears flowed freely down my cheeks, staining my beautiful blue blouse. "I’m going to send Devon to live with Aunt May, so don't worry about him. You need to put your head down, be polite and gracious, Sam. And he won't hurt you."
I sniffed and sobbed as I followed him out of my room and down our short hall. Pictures littered the walls, I stopped at one of my Mother and I, her bright green eyes shimmered back at me and I swallowed hard trying to force back the tears that threatened to breach my eyes. I touched my lips lightly and reached out, placing my fingertips to her cheek. Oh how I missed her. People told me I looked just like her. We were both petite at a small 5 foot 2 inches and weighing no more than around 55kgs. But the thing I loved the most that I inherited from her beauty was my long wavy red hair. It was a dark red but in the light it shone a bright orange. Some people were ashamed of their ginger hair, but I wore mine with pride, my Mother always telling me how beautiful and unique it was. She would have never let this happen, she would have never bargained me for money. I felt anger rise in my stomach, anger at my Father. He was selfish and an addict, maybe in some fucked up reality this was actually my escape from a man who just didn't care enough about his own daughter to fight for her, to keep her safe.
I wiped away the tears that had now trickled lightly down my cheeks and took a couple of deep breaths. I didn't want to show this man who had bought me any weakness. I would be polite and accepting but I would be strong. Strength.
I walked into our lounge with my chin up and confidence in my stride. My Dad was handing my suitcase to a large man dressed in a black suit. He looked like a bodyguard; he was huge. And not in the sexy muscle kind of way, but in the eats too many donuts for breakfast and doesn't run enough kind of way. There were two other men that resembled him standing and one sitting in my Father’s large arm chair. He was handsome, older, maybe in his late thirty’s. He had rings glittering on his fingers and a light gold chain hung around his neck. His hair was short, like a buzz cut and a light brown colour, nothing exciting. But when he looked at me, his dark blue eyes bore intensely into my soul. I was about to be owned and the darkness behind those deep pools was unmistakable.
He rose to his feet and quietly moved towards me. I glanced quickly at my Father. He stood, hanging his head shamefully, still unable to look me in the eye. He'd just gambled away his daughter’s freedom, he should feel shame. A soft gentle hand lifted mine and my eyes shot back to the man in front of me. He smiled, almost softly.
"Hello, Samantha." He lifted my hand to his mouth and brushed it across my knuckles. "My name is Charles. I expect you are ready to leave?"
I swallowed and took a deep breath, polite and gracious my father had said. I was unaware of what this man was capable of so for now, I would play the part until I could figure out how to get myself out of this mess my idiot Father had created.
"Yes, Sir." I said, unable to meet his eyes.
His smile grew a little as I expected he was pleased he would not need to drag me kicking and screaming through the door. He kept my hand in his light grasp as he led me past my Father. I didn't even bother to look up at him as Charles stopped briefly,
"Until we meet again Daniel. Thank you for your business."
We walked slowly down the front steps of my small house, his hand still held gently to mine. Strangely I didn't feel scared. Strength. That's all I needed.
"Sam!!" I turned to see Devon sprinting out the front door and racing towards me, tears uncharacteristically streaking his cheeks. He was always the strong one, I was usually the crier. But for right now, I needed to be his strength. I need to show him I was okay. Charles dropped my hand as Devon dived into the arms I didn't realise I had stretched out to him.
"Don't go Sam, Please!"
I looked up at the man who now owned me, pleading for just a moment with my brother, he smiled softly and nodded, climbing into the back of the large SUV parked at the curb.
I took my little brothers face between my hands and held his gaze.
"Listen Devon. You are gonna go to Aunt Mays, you're gonna finish school, you're gonna do your best and I will always be proud of you." He shook his head profusely. "Strength, Dev. I’ll see you soon.
I pulled his face to my shoulder and wrapped my arms around him. I sometimes wonder if I would have run had I known Charles wouldn't allow me to see Devon. But after he threatened Dev's life if I even thought about trying to escape him, I decided to stay as far from my little brother as possible and just hope like hell he's okay.
Hope.
Strength.

Talking with Addison Jane

Tell us about yourself:

I’m 26, I live in a little country called New Zealand. I have a degree in teaching and while I would love to write full time, I work as well as studying and I’m a full time single parent. I have a special place in my heart for romance and a major love of alpha males!

What was your first book?

Missing Link was the first book I have published and it was a journey and a half. I never thought having people buy and read something I wrote would be realistic until I found myself involved in the indie community being pushed to chase down that dream by some amazing friends.

Describe your first break.

So far no big break yet but there is more to come!

What is your favorite genre to read? To write?

Romance! Romance romance and more romance. I like to write it and I like to read it even more. The books I read must always have a strong male lead. Take no shit and leave no prisoners. But when I write I find that my males tend to have a softer side to them.

What makes a protagonist interesting?

The way they talk, the way they hold themselves, their history and what has made them who they are.

What is the best thing about being a writer?

It’s like being able to form another world. One where readers can feel and see exactly what you do. When I talk to people about my characters after they have read something I’ve written, it’s not like we are talking about them as characters from the pages of a book but more like the characters are our friends and we are sharing their lives. It’s unreal and exciting to be able to talk about someone like they are a real person. That’s what I enjoy the most.

What is the worst thing?

Being a beginning writer, it’s the unease of knowing whether people are going to share your excitement about something that you have poured your heart and soul into.

Pantser or plotter?

Pantser. Sometimes I don’t even know where my story is going to lead. I’m just along for the ride. Sometimes the characters will do something even I didn’t expect!

What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.

Expect something new. The Finders series is deep in my head but recently I started something new and the characters just haven’t left me alone.

Here’s a bit of something not even my Betas have read! (Completely unedited.)

Taking her offer would mean being a person I never thought I would be and being given opportunities I never thought I would have. I could run, go back to my street family and live day by day, hoping for something better, risking my life just to live. But at the end of the day, what would I have? No job and no realistic vision for my future, stealing just to make ends meet. These things had never played on my mind much before because it was what I knew, what I lived and what I accepted as my life. But now, being offered something more, I wasn’t sure if I could go back without at least a taste of what it was like.

Just for fun

Cat or dog person?

DOG.

Favorite food?

Erm.. this is always a hard one. I’m in a sushi faze at the moment.

Favorite book?

Fallen Crest High Series by Tijan

Favorite movie?

I’d never pass up some Frozen.

Favorite vacation destination (you just have to want to go there)

Texas! I have more than one fantasy about cowboys.

Picture
EXCERPT

Lonely darkness fell around Jack as he slipped into his harness and put on his climbing shoes. He crept in and out of the moon’s shadows to the base of the alp and took hold of the strong plant, the itchy touch of it not a problem, the strength of it boosting his confidence. Fueled by the fire burning in his heart to find Gwenie, he stepped on the first node and glanced back. Just one quick look. He didn’t know why. Maybe something in his psyche wanted to see the ground from whence he’d come one last time in case he never set foot on it again.

He climbed up the next nodule and the next as fast as his feet and arms would take him. A sense of leaving the everyday world overwhelmed him as it always did when he climbed, but this time it wasn’t freeing. An eerie sensation sent shivers through his bones with every foot he scaled. The breaking of twigs, crunching of leaves, and howling noises below grew fainter and fainter as he ascended higher and higher.

“Whooo-whoo.” Halfway up he met an owl that turned its head in a circle as it sat on the highest limb of a towering oak. He pulled upward while pushing with his lower body as he passed boulders and scraggly bushes lit by the stars and moon. He searched with his right hand for the next node, found it, moved up and placed his foot on the spot where it had been. The jagged surface on this mountain could rip open a person in an instant, but it was Jack’s fear for Gwenie that gripped him. The yearning to hold her safe in his arms seeped deeper into his pores each time he forged upward.

His body ached as he pulled with nerves wound as tight as a corkscrew for wanting to hurry to the top. Soon his leg muscles cramped. A gray piece of granite jutting out like the seat of a chair with a slab for a back tempted him. How could he rest after what he’d done to Gwenie? He had to keep moving, but what if his arms and legs gave out, and he never reached her? His head throbbed with decision making.

Just for a second he let go of the living pole. His foot slipped, and he slid down the precipice, debris rolling, crashing beneath him until the belay caught the rope and stopped his fall. His head swam as he thrust the spring-loaded camming device into a crack and anchored the cable. He swung to his right and sank to the rocky seat. The stones settled below him and silence filled the darkness where he sat tucked out of the light from Heaven.

Two days ago he was a slap-happy player in love with Gwenie since childhood, but content to drink life’s single pleasures a while longer. Now the need to take hold of a more profound passion that seemed as fragile as one of Dad’s orchids burned in his soul. The breeze whipping around him blew away images of fast rides through Fairwilde with a blond or a brunette laughing beside him. He needed Gwenie. Please Lord, let her be alright waiting for me.

He stretched out his legs then rubbed his palms together. Upward.

He swung out, grabbed hold of the beanstalk, pulled up with his hand and pushed with his foot as a blast of strong wind swayed the sturdy stem. The stars grew dim then disappeared as clouds rolled over them. Raindrops hit his head while lightning flashed, lighting up the sky—nothing but dark space as far as he could see. Then the flash.

He pulled up with his hand and pushed with his right foot—pulled up with his hand and pushed with his right foot again and again through the black void cut by occasional lightning. The tiny glow from the lamp on his helmet did little good in this storm. Another burst of air whipped around him, and the plant quivered. He touched a flat spot. The one Fernando told him to look for? He moved his fingers around it.

Yes. Relief as strong as the gust that bent the trees swept over him. The top. He wanted to shout I’m here Gwenie! into the stormy night over and over, but instead he leaned forward trying to see a way into the cabin.

Gratitude Blog Hop

11/14/2014

Picture
It’s almost Thanksgiving and time to take a moment to be thankful. I wondered what people are grateful, so I googled it. According a poll conducted by PlayBuzz, which over 3,000+ people answered. The results were not what I expected.

1.       Family 60%

2.       Health 11%

3.       Significant Other 10%

4.       Friends 8%

5.       Music & Personal Talents tied 4%

6.       Technology/Money/ Pizza tied at 1%

Abstract concepts such as faith, freedom, and love didn’t rate. The significant other squeaked in at 10%. It could be the idea of romantic love no longer enchants. There are more single people in the United States than married or co-inhabiting folks.

Curiously, employment didn’t make the cut either. My grandmother worked three jobs after her husband died. At four in the morning, she showed up at the bakery and made the bread, pies, and donuts for the day. She took a bus across town to get someone else’s children breakfast and stayed to clean the house.  Finally, she took in laundry and mending for those few hours, she was at home. While some people would consider the work a hardship, she saw it as a blessing and a way to feed her own children.

Food was another thing not mentioned, if you discount pizza. A good part of the world goes to bed hungry. Having something to eat is a very big deal. Having something left over is miraculous. A co-worker told me she’d always put a nice dinner on the table when her children lived with her. That made her happy and proud.

Right now, consider what makes you happy. There’s no right or wrong answer. On a dating profile, I listed my dog, sunshine, and Diet Coke with lime as some of my favorite things. Now, that I’m married my husband takes the number one position. A new member to the list is people like you willing to support folks you don’t know with a comment or a tweet. Bless you. This blog hop is for you.  Visit as many blogs as you can because everyone as something for you. It’s our way of giving back.

Here's  my gratitude slideshow. There's much more, but it took forever to find images.
