In this exciting story that allows the reader the choice of following different characters, young, sheltered Branguin discovers that his ancestor, Marama, has been trapped in the moon, and sets out to free her. But he must first unravel the mystery of how she got there, confront and defeat the sorcerer Raul, and counter a menacing new force that's assembling an army to attack the capital. Branguin deciphers the clues with the help of his companions, several lost relatives along the way. The Lunation Series is a modern-day moon myth about ordinary people discovering their inner strength and overcoming extraordinary challenges, in order to solve a great mystery.

Excerpt One:
If Braven had had a skill, the Boy was unaware of it. He had always been a little frightened of his grandfather, who had been mad almost as long as the Boy could remember, and querulous before that. He had kept well out of the old man’s way — which hadn’t been difficult as Braven spent most of his time in his tiny room, coming out only on those rare, wild turns when his madness bubbled over and he climbed tall trees in the forest, and howled at the moon. Times like this. Usually on these occasions the Boy stood guard with Anselt at the bottom of the tree, ready to protect Braven from the forest’s predatory wolves. Eventually he would exhaust himself and descend, and Anselt would lead him home, docile. Braven would return to the solitude of his bedroom, staring at his gnarled old hands. Until the next time.

But there would not be a next time. His grandfather’s sickening drop replayed in his mind again, only this time, the Boy remembered some words his grandfather had shouted. ‘Damn you, Mara, damn you Mara-ma! Where is she? Give her back, give her baaaaaack!

The words meant little to the Boy — unless Maraluna, the disease Anselt said Braven had, was a person rather than a mental illness. And perhaps ‘she’ was his wife, Elodea, the Boy’s grandmother. She had been killed by wolves not long after her marriage, along with her parents, and their servants — Anselt’s parents. Anselt had become Braven’s servant then. It did not immediately occur to the Boy that Anselt was now his servant. Anselt had raised him, and the Boy saw the woodsman as his guardian.

BLURB:
Police dog handler Mike Winters and his furry partner Falcon love a good chase. They'll do anything to protect the streets of Sydney, whether it's tracking a murderer through the woods or breaking up a bar brawl. To them, it's all fun and games until the bad guy gets hurt. And then it's just fun.

Lately though, it seems that violent incidents are on the rise. When Mike and Falcon's beloved commander is killed in action, Mike is determined to bring the perpetrators to justice, but he has no idea just how deep this malevolent plot runs.

A terrorist organisation has devised a plan to attack the city from all sides, and they have taken over a refuelling ship in Sydney Harbour. Mike and Falcon must use all of their wit and courage to battle the killers, expose police corruption, and, if they're lucky, save a city from obliteration.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Falcon had forced a hole in the cheering crowd, persuading them to move with his loudest and most intimidating bark. A few quick snaps at the slower-moving buttocks and he was through. Mike was right behind him, and looking just as menacing with his leather-and-chain lead in one hand and a long baton in the other.
‘Jesus Christ’. One brother officer was lying under pot plants in a pool of his own blood, while the other was being strangled by one of the biggest Islanders he had ever seen, who was seemingly immune to the punches and kicks of the two door men on his back. The only damage and pain they were inflicting was on themselves as their blows bounced off his muscled exterior. It took about half a second before Mike pulled himself together.
‘Dog 26, signal one! Officer down, get everyone here now!’
The radio answered, but Mike wasn’t listening. He ran forward, which was relatively easy as Falcon was working all four legs at double overtime. He had targeted the massive Samoan and was going to take him on no matter what. Mike knew what was coming and yelled out to the bouncers.
‘Get off him, now!’
As soon as the two bouncers were clear of the action, Mike let go of the lead, releasing Falcon about five metres from his target. The Samoan looked up just in time to see a set of open jaws on a direct collision course with his face. He let go of the female cop, raising his fists in a vain attempt to punch the flying dog back to where it came from. All too late, he opened his mouth to yell. Falcon locked jaws with the Islander, driving his snout clean into the man’s mouth and clamping his jaws shut. The soft tissue inside the drunken cavity popped and tore as Falcon bit down even harder, using the strength in his powerful neck to shake the man left and right; he forced the Samoan to the ground. He couldn’t even scream in terror or pain as Falcon still filled his mouth. He moved his ham-sized hands to Falcon’s throat, not to try and force him off, but to strangle him.
Mike saw what was happening and, even though he knew Falcon could take care of himself, he took exception to this grub trying to throttle his mate. He raised his long baton up over his shoulder and swung the entire spun-aluminium shaft down as hard as he could, smashing it into the right elbow of the bulging arm. The devastating impact popped the joint, which forced his forearm down on an ugly, unnatural angle. Dislocated, it swung uselessly to his side. The blood sprayed harder from the corners of the Samoan’s mouth as he forced the deep red fluid out with his silent scream. His manic breathing forced air noisily between Falcon’s jowls and his own torn mouth.
‘Sorry, mate, just evening things up,’ Mike quipped as he saw other police wading into the crowd. They barged towards the front doors, pushing bodies aside in their frantic attempts to back up their mates.
‘I’ll take care of this idiot. You guys check on those two. And we’re going to need three ambulances.’
Mike directed the rest of the police around the scene as he leaned over Falcon and gave him his command to let go. Falcon’s broad chest and muscular front legs were splattered with a gory reminder of his emphatic victory. He stood next to Mike with his ears up and his chest stuck out with pride. His hackles were still up and massive paws firmly planted, daring anyone else to come near for the same treatment. He kept up a low, menacing growl, interrupted at intervals by a booming bark as he watched four other police officers handcuff and drag the Samoan over to a waiting ambulance. The layer of blood splattered over his chest and body only made him look crazier. Mike checked over Falcon’s body to make sure there were no injuries.
‘Jesus, mate, you really went to town on this one. Now you look like a prop from a bad horror movie.’
He took out a hose from behind the pot plants and washed the red stain away from Falcon’s black and tan fur. Satisfied with the quick rinse, he trotted him back over to their car. There was no need to yell at anyone or tell them to move. They had all seen it, and nobody wanted to take the chance of becoming the next bite bag.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romance/Mystery/Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Kat James likes her men in suits, not cowboy boots. Is it time for a different kind of man?
 Saddle up for a story filled with passion, mystery, unrequited love, and family drama. Can Tucker Williams prove he's the best man for Kat? Or will an old-flame win her back?
 It won't matter, if Kat doesn't survive her family’s dangerous secret.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
“You don’t remember seein’ me that day before I talked to you at the bar, do you?” Kat thought about it and then shook her head. “I didn’t think so.” Tucker scratched along his jaw, and sighed.

 “Well, I saw you. I saw you up the street, runnin’ and dodgin’ people.” He smiled at the memory. “I still don’t understand how you women run in heels.” He shook his head in disbelief, and maybe even a little awe. “Your legs, I noticed immediately. Your umbrella lifted up a few times and I saw your face, stopped my heart for a beat or two. Then I saw where you were headed, knew right then I had to get to the door before you did. Had to find a way to get your attention.” His eyes dropped. “But it didn’t work. You looked right past me, like I wasn’t even there. I heard your name when you checked in, and then I knew I had a decision to make.” He looked down at the coffee mug squeezed between his large hands.

 “We can argue all night about me not comin’ clean on who I was. But the truth, for me, is once I knew you didn’t recognize my name, didn’t know I was the one you were waiting for, I decided then and there to be Tucker Williams—the man, not the pompous venture capitalist.” He paused, searched for recognition. She rewarded him with the hint of a grin at the echo of her own words. “I wanted a chance, Kat. I wanted you. I wanted you to flirt with me the way you did that pretty boy behind the bar.”

 He chewed at the inside of his cheek and waited. Kat glanced down at her lap, attempted to hide her smile.

 “I’m not the sorta guy you usually go for, am I?”

 “Not even close.”

 “So why did you, Kat?”

Searching for Meaning in Gailana Review & Giveaway

John H.T. Francis will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Searching for Meaning in Gailana

by John H.T. Francis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Gailana is the central island of the world; Aurganots, Reminos, Hindarassis, Pelanese, and Free People, different societies with different customs and values, live in it. Gailana is old, with a history rich in events and civilisations. The mother island has undergone important changes in recent decades, including a devastating war from which the Aurganots emerged victorious. Following this war, Aurganot has become a country of wealth, technology, and power, dominating all others.
In this modern age, Aurganots value their new found joie de vivre; Pelanese love commerce and business; Reminos are still dedicated to honour and glory in war; Hindarassis continue to care most about their families; and the Free People cherish their freedom above anything else. Among the Free People, a young Levon has set a high and ambitious goal: to seek and find the ultimate meaning of all that humans do. Levon has been on his intellectual quest for years, and the coming days are significant. Paratos, the sage of Gailana, is in the land of the Free People, and Levon is readying to meet him. The young man knows that something life changing will come out from this meeting, only he does not imagine what.
In this fictional first part of The Story in Three Parts, John H.T. Francis tells the story of Levon, a young and sincere soul looking for meaning in a changing world. This short novel will take you on a journey through Gailana, shows you its diversity, and brings you close to many of its human aspects. Events will develop fast on the island, and Levon is about to be in the midst of them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:
A rooster crows in the distance; the neighbourhood dog barks at it; Levon’s eyes start to move underneath his closed, tired eyelids; his breathing changes. The faint rays of the morning light find their way through the many cracks in the large window. Timid movements can be heard outside the room. Levon wakes up. He opens his eyes and thoughts gather quickly in his mind; he knows this is an important day. Only, Levon is not a morning person; eyelids closed again, he summons his morning’s feeble energy to warm up his muscles. He rolls around in bed and, in doing so, finds himself hugging Gaya, his long-term love and partner. She wiggles her feet gently against his and breathes deeply. Levon turns again and jumps out of bed.

“I need to go,” Levon says while gathering papers and belongings.

Gaya, still in bed, turns towards him, opens her eyes, smiles, and says, “I know.”

Half an hour later, Levon goes out the door, “I need to catch the first shuttle to Nordavia; no time to waste.”

For Levon, who made the search for ‘the general true meaning of human endeavours’ his calling for the past years, the next days are significant. He has a rare chance to come in direct contact with one of the leading living thinkers in Gailana, Paratos, and he hopes that this will help him make the breakthrough for which he has so longed. Paratos is in fact visiting Nordavia, in the land of the freethinking people, or as they simply call themselves ‘the Free People,’ and Levon is eager to make his way to him north, from Sudavia where he lives.

MY TAKE/****Review****

Picture
This is Sea Quartz. Simple. Beautiful. Natural. Polished by human intentions. In truth, it reminds me a great deal of the book.

While I was reading Searching for Meaning in Gailana, I had Dream Messenger playing which is actually meditation music that is airy, fluid, and mystical. It served as fitting background music.

The novel is described a trilogy because it happens in three parts rather like three acts. Don’t let the concept of a trilogy overwhelm because it is concise as opposed to being verbose. It tends to be more of a book for every man told by Levon who could be anyone, except, he has a very grand project. Levon wants to find the real meaning of life.

There are several layers within the tale just as they are several different cultures. It is easy to draw parallels, although the author doesn’t necessarily tell the reader making this book more literary than genre fiction. Paratos, the wise man  Levon idolizes, could easily have been modeled on the Dali Lama. It isn’t too hard to assign names to the country if a person is interested in doing so.

Searching For Meaning in Gailana is Orwellian leaning toward satire in some places, then other times, it is a simple allegory that sometimes reads like a case study. In the end, it is an entertaining tale that could spark discussion and thought.

Picture
BLURB:
The daughter of the Terran president, Penelope Aaron resented the restrictions imposed upon her, but that was no reason to take it out on the man assigned to protect her. She regrets how she got Agent Brock Mann booted from the security force. But now that she’s an interplanetary ambassador about to embark on her first diplomatic mission, she still doesn’t want him tagging along. Especially since he seems to be stronger, faster, more muscled, and sexier than she remembers. And pretending to be husband?  This mission couldn’t get more impossible!

Ten years ago Penelope Isabella Aaron had been a pain in Brock Mann’s you-know-what. Much has changed in a decade: “PIA” as he code-named her, has grown up and is about to attend her first Alliance of Planets summit conference, and Brock was transformed into a cyborg after a near-fatal attack. Now a secret agent with Cyber Operations, a covert paramilitary organization, Brock gets called in, not when the going gets tough, but when the going gets impossible. So when he’s unexpectedly assigned to escort Penelope to the summit meeting, he balks at babysitting a prissy ambassador. But after a terrorist bombing, a crash landing on a hostile planet, and a growing attraction to his protectee, Operation: PIA may become his most impossible assignment yet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
What was so urgent it couldn’t wait until I got back from Darius 4?” Brock flung himself into the wide-backed sensa-chair, which conformed to the angles and lines of his body to provide optimal support and comfort. He would have preferred that an android pleasure worker fit her realistic feminine form around him than a piece of furniture—as he’d been about to experience when the Cyber Operations director’s summons had come through. “You’re the one who insisted I take respite time.”
“Drink?” Carter punched a button on his console, a cabinet slid open, and he removed a decanter. After pouring two shots of bronze liqueur, he shoved one across the desk.
 Brock’s internal warning system flashed an alert. “What’s the bad news?”
“Why do you assume that?”
“Whenever you break out the Cerinian brandy, you’re either trying to butter me up or soften the blow.” He eyed the man who’d been his friend since they served together in the Terran Central Protection Office fifteen years ago. Carter’s blank expression betrayed nothing, but the brandy sang like a yellow songbird.
The director knocked back his shot, then thumped his chest with his fist. Cerinian brandy went down smooth until the afterburn lit your throat on fire. Or it did to one who was unaltered. Brock downed his and felt only slight warmth.
“I have an assignment for you,” Carter said, his voice hoarse from the liqueur. “The Association of Planets Summit is on Malodonus next week. There’s been a threat against…the Terran ambassador,” he hesitated like he expected Brock to short-circuit a computer chip.
GENRE:  Chick Lit Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:
Carmella Sannarelli just found out that her best friend, Sadie Miller, has broken her engagement and is eloping on St. Croix. Though Carmella agrees to act as the maid of honor, she’s determined to find out what went wrong between her friends.

But she’s not counting on coming face to face with Ryan Wutkowski (the jilted fiancé) on the plane, or with staying at his hotel during a two-day stopover in San Juan. They try to act like nothing’s changed. But Carmella’s totally flustered by the weird vibes Ryan sends her, as well as how tingly and off-kilter she feels every time he so much as looks at her.

Now Carmella can’t stop thinking about Ryan or his behavior, even though most of her time in St. Croix is taken up by pre-wedding activities and dodging advances from the womanizing best man. And she knows there’s more to the story behind Ryan and Sadie’s breakup than either of them will admit to her.

Especially after Ryan shows up at the rehearsal dinner and gets himself invited to the wedding...

 ~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Ryan’s silent for a second or two. “Maybe I’ll put the house up for sale and move to Savannah. I’d be closer to you if I did that.”
“Oh, come off it,” I scoff, but my voice quivers with tears.
“I can deliver cakes for Tess.”
He’s trying to joke about this? “Your career, your whole life is in Atlanta.”
“Maybe that’s not important enough to me anymore.”
I should protest, should tell him he’d be stupid to uproot himself because of all that’s happened. But my voice stops working, and I don’t know why. In the end, he wouldn’t really do it, even though he’s always professed a certain adoration for my adopted hometown. Ultimately, he would suck it up, maybe sell the house, but continue on as usual without complaining.
After a few minutes, the urge to wail like a thwarted baby passes, and I relax against him. He rests his chin on the top of my head, swaying to the unpredictable ebb and flow of the foaming breakers. The movement calms me, and I close my eyes with a grateful sigh. He gathers my hair and lifts the whole, tangled mass of it, resting his hand at the nape of my neck. His fingers caress, a touch so fleeting I barely notice it.
“Carmella.”
There’s a note in his voice I don’t understand, and my defenses flare. With a deep breath to steel myself, I push away from him, thankful the shadows hide both our faces.
She laughs. “Really?”
I nod enthusiastically. “Uh huh, definitely. Best. Idea. Ever.”
****MY TAKE ON DEAL BREAKERS  ****
Devyn is a practical beauty who has no time for boyfriends. As an orphan, she only has enough funds to get her through college on the four year plan. Riley is a lady's man who is also a rule breaker.
The story is an engaging one with Riley willing to stay in the friend zone and actually becomes the friend Devyn needs.  He lays off his player ways and quits trying to bed her. Everything cruises along until graduation looms on the horizon. Devyn who was always the rule follower decides it is time to break a few.
Wow! I'd call it a New Adult romance, which is more realistic and sexier than a Young Adult novel.  Both Devyn and Riley share the first person narrative, this sounds  difficult, but it is easy to differentiate who is talking. Ms. Lee packed both characters with specific traits and speech patterns that won't have you mistaking one for the other.
This is a fun, fast read that sounds as if it could have been penned by college kids. ( I do mean that as a compliment.) Romance fans of any age should enjoy this sassy, spicy tale.
The most powerful woman in her tribe, Blaze can heal with a touch, control the elements, merge her mind with any living creature and more. Yet, she is an outcast. Her people fear her and she herself is afraid of the things she can do. There is darkness in her visions, along with a tall, buckskin-clad stranger with golden-brown hair and eyes as green as the leaves on trees. Somehow, he is her destiny.
Luc Cordell is done with trapping. He yearns for civilization and a normal life. His only regret is leaving behind his family. But his father’s second wife is a SpiritWalker, and now, so is his father. How can Luc live with people who run with the wolves or soar across the heavens with the owls? Yet when a haunted healer with stars in her colorful eyes enters his life, he is drawn into the mystical world whether he likes it or not.
The winds of change are sweeping across the land, taking Luc and Blaze into a world of lies, deceit, and murder. Together, they search for truth and must turn to the eagles for answers.
Excerpt Three:
 The sound of a whine drew her attention. The injured wolf limped into the tall, dried grass. He turned and gave a low keening howl. It took a moment for her overwhelmed mind to spot the booted foot poking out of the brush. When she did, she hurried over. Parting the grass, she stilled and the air left her lungs.
“Oh, no.” She stared into open, sightless green eyes. These same eyes she’d seen in her crystals, those of the handsome trapper. Blaze rushed to his side, tears sliding down her face. “I’m too late!” Staring down at strong, rugged features, she pulled out her clear crystal and held it in one hand. It was completely blank. No green eyes, no red blood. Just the stars that seemed to pulse with life. Braced for the horror of death, she cupped her palm to one side of the young trapper’s face, feeling as though she’d lost part of her soul.
Setting the crystal on his chest, she was startled when a tiny spark of green flickered in the heart of the stone. She kept her palm on his face and leaned close, her breath fanning his face as she stretched out her other hand, holding it over him. She lowered her palm to his bloody chest. There was no heartbeat, no sign of air going in and out of his lungs, yet she felt something, not physical but deeper. His body might have given up, but the spirit of the man remained.
“No.” She pressed her hand hard onto his chest and gripped the side of his face. Tears slipped from her eyes. One dripped onto his cheek. “You cannot go.” Beneath her hand, she felt a sudden jolt, and hope flared in her soul. “I’m not too late.”
Without thought to the danger of retrieving a soul that had already departed the body, she merged with the stranger. He didn’t feel like such a stranger to her heart.
The Brotherhood
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Detective Tadhg Sullivan’s life seems to be falling apart, since being shifted to Clare from Dublin after falling out with the Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner.

Suddenly Sullivan is knocked out of his lethargy when a teenage girl goes missing not far from Ennis where he has been stationed. Sullivan is asked to lead the hunt by the local Superintendent and is catapulted into a world of unimaginable horror.

Will he be able to destroy The Brotherhood before their murderous reign takes another young life or will The Brotherhood destroy Sullivan and everything he loves?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
She knew nothing of the white van that pulled up behind her, until the two men grabbed her and bundled her into the back of it.  She’d been jogging along the road, with her headphones on listening to Mumford and Sons.  At first she’d thought it was a prank being carried out by some of her friends.  But, as the van tore along the narrow road at top speed and she found herself being tossed from side to side, she knew something much more sinister was unfolding and started to scream.  Suddenly the van took a sharp left.  She fell and smashed her face against the side panelling.  Then she could feel it being driven down a long pebbled lane.  She stared at her headphones, the music still blaring, lying on the floor of the van.  She cursed herself for not listening to her parents who had begged her to bring her mobile phone.
The Brotherhood features Detective Tadhg Sullivan from Book One. Sullivan’s girlfriend Helen left him  due to his drinking, which leaves him despondent. He often ends up closing the bar in an effort to hold off his loneliness. A recent abduction of a local girl peaks his interest enough to put the bottle aside.
Sullivan finds himself drawn into seedy doings of a strange group of powerful individuals who refer to themselves as The Brotherhood. One of their rituals is sacrificing a virgin. Time is running out for the local girl, which causes Sullivan to enlist the services of an ex-CIA operative
My take on the book. The disillusioned detective finds purpose in a case is one of my favorite tropes, even though it is rather standard. The suspense, pacing, and settings makes the tale work. Some bits don’t line up with American sensibilities. One of these is the detective’s ability to search the surrounding houses for the girl without the trouble of a search warrant. It could be the villagers aren’t as paranoid as the average American.
Overall, The Brotherhood is an intriguing tale that offers redemption for Sullivan and entertainment for the readers. Two thumbs up for this mystery, which can be read as a stand-alone story too.
