BLURB:
An incubus who feeds off the sexual desires of others, Roth de Lis has never been denied the pleasure of a woman’s body...until now. Lilah, once a warrior maiden in the service of a goddess, languishes on Earth after being cast out from the slopes of Mount Olympus.

Lilah will do anything to return home to Olympus, including betraying Roth. As she spins her web of lies, Roth begins a slow, wicked seduction that eventually threatens to consume them both. But when Lilah’s deceit comes to light, will their torrid love affair be able to overcome a pact with the darkest of gods?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Roth made his way back through the VIP room and into the dance area. Half a dozen women had approached him before he could make it to the door, slipping him phone numbers he’d never use and telling him names he didn’t care to know. One in particular got a little too frisky, trying to corral him into a kiss before he gently set her aside and continued making his way out.
He was only interested in one woman’s kiss, but Lilah had decided he wasn’t worth her time. And she’s right. Roth knew he didn’t have anything to offer one such as her, but he wanted her all the same. Want her. The incubus echoed his thoughts back to him, as if it were puzzling over the same riddle—how to make her… What? Make her love me? Impossible.
 The hope at such a fairy tale died in his breast as he remembered how she’d turned from him after he revealed his terrible secret. He’d done so much to so many that he would forever be tainted. The incubus would never leave. To do so meant death for the both of them. She was repulsed by his evil, as she should be.
 He would have sighed had he been the sort, but instead he pushed out the front doors, nearly breaking them off their hinges. He noted his empty car with a total lack of surprise. Lilah had a problem following directions, as he well knew. Her bullheaded nature made him smile to himself.
 The he saw her. She stood as if frozen, somehow dumbstruck as a male slung his arm around her and groped her ass.
 In an instant, Roth decided he would kill the male for touching her, but first he would make him suffer.
ANDRUS
 Once the most powerful immortal assassin ever to exist, this demigod now spends his days pining for the girl who got away: Helena. Doesn’t help that he’s also Helena’s full-time nanny slash bodyguard. But now that the apocalypse is over and her husband, the vampire general, has returned home for good, it’s time to move on.
But can Andrus let go of the woman he secretly loves?
Cimil, Goddess of the Underworld and owner of Immortal Matchmakers, Inc., knows the solution is finding another gal. The right gal. But getting a woman to date this callous, unrefined, coldhearted warrior will prove to be the biggest challenge of her existence. Good thing they’re in L.A.
When aspiring actress Sadie Townsend finds herself one week away from being thrown out on the street, the call from her agent is like a gift from heaven. But when she learns the job is teaching the world’s biggest barbarian how to act like a gentleman, she wonders if she shouldn’t have asked for more money. He’s vulgar, uncaring, and rougher around the edges than a serrated bread knife. He’s also sexy, fierce, and undeniably tormented.
Will Sadie help him overcome his past, or will she find her heart hopelessly trapped by a man determined to self-destruct?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
PG 13 Excerpt
Commotion erupted in the restaurant, snapping Sadie back into awareness that she was lying on the restaurant floor underneath this large man, who was actually assaulting her.

“You think you can take me down with a little knife?” he snarled.

“Dammit, Andrus. You barbaric asshole,” barked the man’s date, “she was not trying to attack you, she was trying to serve you meat.”

A moment passed as the man stared into her eyes, still lying right on top of her, his cock nestled right up against her crotch. She felt his heart pounding away in his chest, the rhythm strangely matching her own frantic beats, like two war drums pounding together.

 Ohmygod. What am I doing enjoying this?

 You are not. You’re offended!

 Yes. I am.

His eyes moved to her lips and then a cocky, devious smile worked onto his mouth. “Whoops. Guess I overreacted,” he said in a slow, deep unabashed voice.

 He thought this was funny? He’d knocked the wind out of her and everyone was staring while she’d experienced an embarrassingly erotic moment that proved she was nuts or completely hard up for a man. Or into having public sex.

“Fucking asshole,” she snarled, catching her air, “get off.”

 A wicked little smile flickered across his lips. “Perhaps later,” he whispered. “At present, I’m on a date.”

 BLURB:

Everything seems to be going well in Jack’s life. His store is busy making money hand over fist and his best friend has found love. The new bookkeeper at the store discovers things aren’t actually as they seem. Someone is playing fast and loose with the store accounts. Jack’s bestie and his knitting group fancy themselves detectives and jump at the chance to solve Jack’s problems. When they aren’t re-enacting scenes from Mission: Impossible, they’re setting Jack up on dates and generally insinuating themselves into his love life. They’re determined to find love for Jack as well as his missing money. Will Jack catch a thief or find love? Either way Jack’s going to get his man.

Excerpt One:
The first candidate arrived promptly at 9:30 or at least his mom did. Danny ushered an elderly lady with a stern bun into Jack’s office and made a hasty retreat.

Jack just stared at her until Izzy cleared her throat and poked him in the ribs. “I’m sorry,” she said when Jack kept staring. “We were expecting someone named Fred. Is that you?”

 The woman looked first at Jack and then at Izzy. “Of course that’s not me,” she snapped. “What kind of name is Fred for a woman?”

 “Er.. um,” Izzy stumbled. “Do you know where Fred is?”

 The woman rolled her eyes and harrumphed. “He’s in the bathroom. He always gets nervous at interviews.”

 “Um. Okay,” Izzy was quick to respond when she saw Jack opening his mouth. Knowing Jack nothing appropriate was coming out of his mouth at the moment. “Can you have a seat outside while we conduct the interview?” Izzy could do prim and proper when necessary.

The woman gave Izzy the evil eye before turning on her heel and walking out. They never saw Fred.

 Jack was licking his fingers when Danny ushered in the next candidate. “Hi!,” the enthusiastic candidate nearly shouted. “I’m Tim!” That part was definitely shouted.

Jack and Izzy stood to shake the man’s hand. He swayed a bit as he leaned forward. Jack took a sniff, but didn’t smell anything untoward. Tim collapsed in his seat while Jack stared at his hand in disgust. Tim’s hands were sweaty. Jack’s mouth pulled tight in a grimace and his nose scrunched in disgust.

“So Tim. Why do you want this job?” Izzy’s voice was overly enthusiastic in an attempt to bring Tim’s attention to her so he wouldn’t see Jack’s grimace. She need not have bothered. Tim had leaned back in the chair and closed his eyes. When he didn’t respond, Izzy snapped her fingers. “Tim?”

“Huh? What?” He started.

“Have you been drinking?” Jack didn’t even bother to ask in a polite manner.

Tim shrugged. “Just a tiny drink to settle my nerves.”

Jack stood. “Okay. Thanks a lot for coming. We’ll be in touch.”

 Tim looked confused but managed to struggle to his feet and lurch out of the door. Izzy was giggling uncontrollably by the time Jack sat back down. He snorted. “At least this isn’t boring.”

I was born and raised in Wisconsin, but think I’m a European. After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. My flying Dutch husband and I have lived in Ohio, Virginia, the Netherlands, Germany and now Istanbul. We still haven’t decided if we want to settle down somewhere – let alone where. Although I’ve been a military policewoman, a commercial lawyer, and a B&B owner, I think with writing I may have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. That’s assuming I ever grow up, of course. Between tennis, running, traveling, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, and reading books like they are going out of style, I write articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, review other indie authors’ books, write a blog about whatever comes to mind and am working on my sixth book.

Welcome Author D.E. Haggerty

Tell us about yourself
:
I’m a middle-aged *eek* woman who has tried several professions before settling down to write. I’ve been a lifeguard, a sport shop manager, military policewoman, lawyer and B&B owner/operator. I love to learn new things so it’s not surprising that I’m always taking new courses and starting new studies even though I already have a Bachelor’s degree in history and a law degree. I love to travel and get the heebie-jeebies about settling down somewhere. I’ve lived in numerous states in the U.S. as well as Germany, the Netherlands and now Turkey. If I’m not playing tennis, running much slower than I would like, trying to adopt every stray dog within a 5-mile radius, traveling to exotic new locales, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, addictively watching new movies, then I’m writing or reading books like they are going out of style.

What was your first book?

Unforeseen Consequences is my first published work. I wrote another book before Unforeseen Consequences which I didn’t publish. I thought with Unforeseen Consequences I had a publish-worthy book. Now when I look at it, I cringe.

Describe your first break.
I’m still waiting for my first real ‘break’. In the meantime, I plod along and with each book I write, I manage to sell a few more and gain more of a following. I don’t know if I’ll ever get that big break but I’m having a good time.

What is your favorite genre to read? To write?

Whether I’m writing historical fiction, suspense thrillers or chick lit, I always like to add a bit of mystery. So I’d say that writing mystery is my favorite genre to write. My favorite genre to read really depends on my mood. I read a bit of everything from autobiographies to fantasy.

Are Happy Endings are must in your stories?

No, definitely not. I think with chick lit romance novels, you have to have a happily ever after. Readers expect it – rightfully so in my opinion. With any other type of book, the ending should be dictated by the characters and their motivations.

What makes a protagonist interesting?

He or she needs to be human so not perfect. Nothing worse than the perfect person with the perfect life. Boring. There also should be some type of character growth for the protagonist to be interesting.

What is the best thing about being a writer?
I love making up my own schedule and not having to go to an office. I wear pajamas most of the time and there’s no one here to complain.

What is the worst thing?

The lack of physical interaction with other people. I have plenty of cyber contact but sometimes I miss seeing a smiling face.

Pantser or plotter?

I’m definitely a plotter. I don’t outline to great detail but I do always have an idea of where the story starts and ends. The middle parts can change a bit.

What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.
I’m working on the third and final book in the Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives series. This story centers around Dee, the granddaughter of one of the knitting detectives. She’s finally escaped her husband, but when the man ends up dead, the police start pointing fingers at Dee. The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives step in to solve the mystery and clear Dee’s name.

Just for fun

Cat or dog person?

Dog. No question about that. I wish I could adopt all the stray dogs in Istanbul and give them a furever home.

Favorite food?

Chocolate. Except in the mornings, then it’s coffee.

Favorite book?

This question is soooo hard. I have dozens and dozens of favorite books. I’ll name a few: Reading Lolita in Tehran, The Kite Runner, Harry Potter (because I’ll never grow up). I could go on and on.

Favorite movie?
Sideways. It never fails to put a smile on my face although I can’t watch it without a bottle of wine.

Favorite holiday?

I’m not much of a holiday person and now I live in a Muslim country that has totally different holidays from my upbringing in the Midwest. I can say that I miss a holiday like Memorial Day weekend when there is the promise of summer in the air. Camping, waterskiing, making s’mores… sounds like fun.

Would you rather be the princess or the villain? Why?

A villain. A villain has more fun. A princess has to follow protocol (like wearing high-heeled shoes all the time). Doesn’t sound like much fun.

Who has more fun, orcs or hobbits?
Hobbits totally. They like to drink beer – something I can totally relate to. They go on adventures and have free will. The orcs just follow orders, which are pretty much summed up with go find and kill.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
"Let me get that for you."
 Mac's face appeared at her shoulder, his cheek close enough that if she moved her lips a very few inches she could plant a kiss there.
Now where had that thought come from? Easy, girl.
The rich smell of man, out-of-doors, and a hint of the morning's after-shave had wafted over her and had her thinking sensual thoughts like cheek-smooching. Okay, way more sensual than just cheeks as her gaze zeroed in on lips made for kissing. Lips still so soft and noticeable though surrounded by the close-clipped dark beard. Lips that easily curved into a smile capable of stealing her breath away. Lips like that had to be made for kissing. His eyes studied hers intently.
Dear Lord don't let this man read my thoughts. They'd set his hair on fire.
 As though he had heard, his sexy lips curved into that breath-stealing smile.
 Kiss me. Please, kiss me.
The wayward thought made her gasp in surprise.
 He shifted back a few inches. "It's okay. I've got it."
 Great. He'd heard. How embarrassing. She had gasped like an adolescent teen.
 He straightened and pulled the bag into his arms, then dropped it into the wagon. "These are too heavy for you."
 "Not really. I'd have to load them if you weren't here."
 "But I am here."
His voice had gone husky, and her skin tingled. He was only inches away again. When had he moved? So quick, so silent.
His predatory-blue eyes trained on her, skimming over her face -- over her -- as though memorizing the way she looked. Or was he searching for answers to unasked questions?
Her pulse raced. Her palms grew damp.
Mac leaned closer.
She held her breath.
BLURB:
Kitten, an American tabby residing in England, is a frustrated cat. He knows his place in the world: he was born to kill. Killing, after all, is what felines are supposed to do. Confined within his Lady's house, however, the young fellow is deprived of the opportunity to hunt live prey. The mansion is a sterile playground for a predator; offering nothing more than furniture which allows itself to be brutalized far too easily. The ambitious cat is bored and hungry for a challenge.
 Kitten learns of a passage hidden in his Lady's library: the Door, which leads to an unknown world. The cat has been told that the source of all evil dwells openly in this place. The feline is eager to fight the sinister personage and goes through the Door with no hesitation.
 The tabby finds himself in what appears to be a forest like any other in England. It doesn't take long for him to learn that this is a very different place.
 Written in the basic style of classic stories like THE LORD OF THE RINGS, WATERSHIP DOWN, and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, this novel can be appreciated on different levels. To some readers, it's an allegorical tale: thought-provoking and filled with symbolism. To others, it's an adventure-filled page-turner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:

The little silver tiger tabby had everything, it seemed. The fortunate fellow had been blessed with a fabulous home in the country northeast of London; this grand mansion provided by his Lady, with over a hundred fascinating rooms to explore, and countless flights of stairs for dashing up and racing down. Along with the palatial digs came the exquisite sustenance the cooking staff lavished on the feline with loving care. Surely few cats were lucky enough to dine on food fit for royalty; delicacies such as sweet fresh salmon flown in via helicopter from a remote Scottish loch and poached into pink perfection by the household’s Swiss chef. This entrée was customarily followed by an antique plate of Sèvres porcelain bearing hunks of blue-veined Stilton. As Kitten licked the creamy cheese from his French dish’s illustrated surface, he could enjoy a painted scene depicting Hercules in  the act of capturing Cerberus; the vicious three-headed canine of Greek myth. Snatched from his guard post at the entrance to the underworld, the hideous dog snarled and struggled in enameled vain under the sandpaper friction of the tabby’s rosy tongue.

Such an existence was the most pleasant and thoroughly civilized one a house cat could hope for; that much was certain. This particular house cat, however, spent a great deal of time at the mansion’s windows; his glowing amber eyes staring with relentless longing at the wildlife that moved about through his Lady’s forested garden. Yes; the wildlife: the Wild Life.

Picture
BLURB:
Fighting for his life after an ambush, Sheriff Josh Wellman awakes to find himself looking into the eyes of a real-life angel of mercy. Despite his groggy condition, he knows his life has changed the instant their hands touch.

 Devastating heartbreak has left Mercy Smith's faith in tatters, her heart guarded against more loss. Her dedication to the air evac trauma team she leads has insulated her from the realities of the earth below, so now Josh faces the biggest challenge of his life.

Can he find a way around the walls that fortify her heart and convince this angel to stay on the ground with him? Can Mercy open herself to life again and find a way to restore her faith in God ... as well as love?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
 There were ample hands ready to do just that. Less than five minutes were required to load the patient and get the crew back in their seats before the helicopter took flight again. They had no time to waste, and the race with the invisible, yet ever-ticking, clock had begun.
 Mercy began her in-flight assessment, speaking through the mike inside her helmet that linked her with the medical team at the hospital. Onboard technology allowed the doctors to hear her and monitor the patient’s vital readings in order to make the calls on what meds needed to be pushed in-flight. She and Paul worked quickly with long-practiced ease in the tight confines of the jet craft. For the time being, the patient held his own.
 Mercy looked again at the readout from the overhead blood pressure machine. Her glance then fell to the face of the patient. She caught a slight flicker of his eyelids as he tried to lift them. On his second attempt, she found herself the focus of the bluest eyes she had ever seen. The thought came briefly that, given another situation, they might be quite mesmerizing, almost like watching the still waters of a serene lake. She hastily pushed the unbidden and whimsical thought to the side and returned to a professionally focused mindset. The oxygen mask kept him from speaking, but his eyes were quite eloquent and anything but calm, holding a mixture of pain, fear, and questions.
 “Hang in there.” She tried to reassure him with her practiced, soothing tones. “We’ll have you on the ground at the hospital in just a few minutes. Squeeze my hand if you can understand me.” She placed her hand under his. Very slowly, long fingers moved to grasp hers. “Good job.”
BLURB:
Summer, 1976. Luz de Rueda returns to her beloved Spain and takes a job as the biographer of a famous artist. On her first day back in Cadiz, she encounters a bewitching, passionate young gypsy, Leandro, who immediately captures her heart, even though relationships with his kind are taboo.
 Haunted by this forbidden love, she meets her new employer, the sophisticated Andres de Calderon. Reserved yet darkly compelling, he is totally different to Leandro – but almost the gypsy’s double. Both men stir unfamiliar and exciting feelings in Luz, although mystery and danger surround them in ways she has still to discover.
 Luz must decide what she truly desires as glistening Cadiz, with its enigmatic moon and whispering turquoise shores, seeps back into her blood. Why is she so drawn to the wild and magical sea gypsies? What is behind the old fortune-teller’s sinister warnings about ‘Gemini’? Through this maze of secrets and lies, will Luz finally find her happiness … or her ruin?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Luz set eyes on him for the first time from her seat on Zeyna’s back as the fine white Arab mare stepped down the narrow path from the cliff that led to the beach. He was sitting on the edge of the track, leaning nonchalantly against a wild carob tree, watching her while chewing on a sprig of heather. As she drew nearer, she met his steady gaze, spirited and wild. At that moment she had no idea this man would have the power to change her world and create such havoc in her heart, that she would emerge from the experience a different person. Fate had not yet lit up the winding pathway of her life nor the echoes of history along it, but now, in front of this stranger, a disturbing awareness leapt into flame deep inside her and began to flicker intensely.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Hannah Fielding is an incurable romantic. The seeds for her writing career were sown in early childhood, spent in Egypt, when she came to an agreement with her governess Zula: for each fairy story Zula told, Hannah would invent and relate one of her own. Years later – following a degree in French literature, several years of travelling in Europe, falling in love with an Englishman, the arrival of two beautiful children and a career in property development – Hannah decided after so many years of yearning to write that the time was now. Today, she lives the dream: writing full time at her homes in Kent, England, and the South of France, where she dreams up romances overlooking breath-taking views of the Mediterranean.

TIGHT LACED

by Roxy Soulé
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Roxy Soulé’s debut Dragon Duchess series explores the spicier side of late Victorian England, and centers around a family of headstrong, sexpositive women who defy period stereotypes.
Oh, yes, there are Alpha Dukes aplenty, and a bevy of villains who continually torment and thwart, but at the end of the day, these heroines create their own Happily Ever After, sometimes with their lovers and sometimes despite them.
These rather short, hot books may be a bit bold for the tame reader, but if you like your stories with heat and heart – with a bit of sass, humor and spark – perhaps you will enjoy these.
TIGHT LACED (Book One of the Dragon Duchess series) releases August 11th!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Excerpt Two:
Lacilia fingered the edges of the duke’s handkerchief. She ran the tip of her pinkie over the nubbed Scottish beast.

The embroidered dragon was impressive: a huge reptilian body covered with a mail of plate and scales from head to tail, ending in a great and deadly stinger. From gaping jaws emerged dangerous fangs and the belching of flame. The stitch work was more detailed than any Lacy had come across. The dragon’s beady eyes, a sharp spike on his nose, a forked tongue, eagle's feet and bat's wings.

From her tutors she had learned a bit about the rampants of Scotland. The dragon symbolized power, wisdom and clear-headedness.

 But the duke? He certainly did not display clear-headedness. And what of wisdom? Lacy had no evidence of that, either.

So why did she tingle so, holding the handkerchief in her palm?

Why did her center suddenly throb with desire?

 Would it be sacrilegious to pleasure herself on such a day?

 Lacilia rose from her bed and tiptoed to her door. She peeked out into the long, dark hallway.

Guest Blogger Interview 2

1.)                What did you want to be when you grew up?
           Strangely I always wanted to be a lollipop lady - one of those ladies who stands at the side of the road and helps kids cross the street?! I think I thought they had a constant supply of lollipops! After that I fancied being a famous singer or member of a girl band, but obviously that wasn't to be. I made do with a lot of singing into my hairbrush instead!

2.)                Coffee, tea or hot chocolate?
                Is this a trick question? I don't think any writers can write without coffee!!

3.)                What genre do you typically read? Why?

             I love all kinds of books, really! I do love a good heart stopping romance though, or a thriller. I'm reading The Bone Clocks at the moment and it's amazing.

4.)                Share a favourite childhood memory.

             My uncle, who's not actually an uncle, more of a family friend used to design treasure hunts that would have four of us kids running round the garden looking for clues and prizes. It was so much fun. I used to love those afternoons of adventure, feeling like pirates looking for treasure!

5.)                Do you have any shameless addictions? ie. Tea, Books, Shoes, Clothes?

            I'm kind of addicted to Instagram - boring but true! I also really love playing my guitar, even though I'm not really all that good!

6.)            What do you think is the biggest challenge of writing a new book?

          Getting past the 30k mark, for sure. I think that's the hardest part as it always feels like it takes the longest. I also love the research, although it's a challenge. I spent a lot of time before starting on The Day Of The Wave making sure I got all my facts straight about the Boxing Day tsunami.

7.)            Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages a day?

            Not really, I try to write when I'm inspired, otherwise it feels like a chore. Mind you though, when I tried to write Before He Was Gone in 5 weeks it was tough to keep going. I stuck to 4000 words a day with that one!

8.)            What are your thoughts on writing a book series?

          I enjoyed writing my Before He Was... series, and I love how the characters are interwoven with each other across three books, but it's somehow not as exciting anymore as writing a damn good standalone (well, that's what I hope I've done here anyway!!)

The Day of the Wave

BLURB:
Torn apart by the tragedy. Thrown back together ten years later by destiny... Isla and Ben were just sixteen when the Boxing Day tsunami ripped through their beach resort in Thailand. Just days after forming a life-changing bond, both were missing and presumed dead.

Based on real life events, The Day of the Wave is a story of healing, learning to let go, and figuring out when to hold on with everything you have left.

Excerpt One:

'Isabella,' I said to the girl in braids behind the computer. She was frantic, tapping away a million miles an hour. A line of people were behind me. All of them were bedraggled and beside themselves, like the cast of a war movie. 'Isabella from England. Izzy. I left her on the beach. Can you look again?'

'We don't have any Isabella's yet, I'm sorry,' she said. I asked a hundred times about Toby, too, and Charlie and Van and Tee, but I always got the same answer.

 They'd brought in experts from everywhere - Austria, the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, and all of them I realized quickly were carrying out the gruesome tasks it took to identify the dead. Most of it wasn't even happening behind closed doors. There weren't enough doors.

After a while, no one was bringing the injured in anymore. It was just more bodies and still none of them were Toby. Still none of them were Charlie or Izzy... at least, I didn't think they were. There were panels of photos of the bodies as they were brought in, on the walls. But they were all so horribly deformed. You can't even imagine what water does. People go black, their eyes bulge out of their sockets. The only way to recognize somebody at first is by their jewelry.

 They were fingerprinting the corpses, I discovered. They gave them full dental examinations and took X-rays, then they sent the DNA samples away for analysis. It was when I learned they were matching them to a missing-person's list in Phuket that I begged to be taken there, to the International Hospital. I knew more bodies were there. Maybe I'd find Toby there.

I found my mom instead. She'd just flown in and been allowed a transfer. 'My baby,' she cried when she found me, pulling me against her and sobbing. I was sixteen but her words hit hard. I felt like a baby; a useless, helpless, broken baby. Glenn stood solid like a tree behind her. He hugged me too. It was the first and last time he ever did.

We moved to a hotel, where we stayed for two weeks and I made it my job to look out for Sonthi. He was going through the same thing, only he was still searching for twenty people he loved. We played guitar at night. We knew the same Beatles song so we sang together outside, taught ourselves the harmonies to take our minds off all the tragedies. Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, Now it looks as though they're here to stay, Oh I believe in yesterday.

Even though Sonthi didn't know the meaning of the words, I think they helped us both somehow. The yesterdays we missed were haunting everyone but at least we escaped with our lives.

I went with mom to the councilor, too, but she cried all the way through, and she cried so much at the hotel that I didn't sleep for days. I was a shell. I had no tears left. 'They're gone, they're never coming back,' mom yowled.

'We don't know that!' I yelled at her, but she yowled even more into the walls and the floor and the pillow, while a thousand other people doing the same made even the hotel feel like a funeral parlor.

We got told that DNA breaks down once bodies decompose. The longer we had to wait, the less chance we had of identifying anyone. Eventually I had to say goodbye to Sonthi and everyone at the hospital I'd gotten to know. Our flight was booked; my brother and uncle and Izzy were officially missing, assumed dead. My mom was a pale-faced Martian I didn't know anymore and she hadn't really spoken to me in days. 'Toby, my baby, Toby!,' she wailed into Glenn's expensive shirt as he helped her outside and into the taxi.

I was just about to leave for the airport when the girl in braids came to grab me. 'Ben,' she said, leaning down, putting a hand to my shoulder. I could tell by her face she had bad news. 'We found Isabella, from the UK,' she said as the tears careened down her face. 'There's only one on the list. I'm so sorry.'

It was raining when I got outside. It was a real tropical downfall; the kind of rain that lashes and hurts. I turned my face up to it and let it hit me as the wind howled. I wanted to feel the physical crash of everything that had been breaking my heart. The only thing I felt was how it wasn't rain at all. It felt like my brother and Izzy and Charlie and two hundred thousand other souls were crying.

BLURB:
1893 . . . Alice Porterman is released from her duties as a maid and travels home to help her mother care for her sickly brother. But her mother and brother are not in their family home when Alice arrives and she learns the landlord, Albert Donahue, has evicted them into the harsh Boston winter. Alice goes in search of him and is surprised at what she finds.

 Albert Donahue, an up-and-coming member of Boston’s elite, made his fortune through hard work and shrewd business deals. But his dreams of a family to share it with have not come true, perhaps until an impertinent young woman enters his home and won’t leave until she speaks to him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Boston 1893
Chapter One
 Alice Porterman looked at Mrs. McKinnell. “What do you mean Ma and Jimmy aren’t living here anymore? It is our house!”
“They’re living in two rooms at the back of the church, Alice. I would have taken them in here, but I have no room, none at all,” Alice’s mother’s closest neighbor said to her. “You better get them, girl. Jimmy wasn’t doing well the last time I stopped by. Your mam can hardly leave him to get victuals or go to work. I’ve been shopping for her when I can.”
 “Thank you, Mrs. McKinnell. I’ll go right away.” Alice turned and looked at the narrow two-story home where she’d grown up. “I’ll just put my bags in the house,” she said, and started down the walk that separated the Porterman and McKinnell homes as she had just arrived from the train station coming from Washington.
“Nay, you can’t, girl. They’ve changed the locks. Your mam couldn’t even get back in to get your brother’s medicine. Leave your cases on my porch. I’ll have one of the boys carry them in and we’ll keep them here until you’re settled somewhere.”
“Thank you, Mrs. McKinnell,” Alice said, red-faced. “I will get them as soon as I get this straightened out.”
“Don’t worry, Alice. Just get your mother and brother back home where they belong.”
Alice nodded and kissed the plump, red-headed woman’s cheek. “Thank the Lord you were here to help Ma.”
“It’s nothing. Neighbors do for neighbors. Your mam would do the same for me, she would. So, your mother had Jimmy read me the letter she got from you that those rich nobs are paying you without you even working for them. La-de-dah! And look at them skirts of yours! That is fine wool, is it not, with them lacy petticoats sticking out? And a pretty little hat to boot!”
