Belladonna is in serious trouble

Picture
When her neighbors accuse Belladonna of Satanism and making them age years to days, she must find who is behind it or face a modern day witch hunt. Her mysterious enemy knows where to strike to cause the most damage: Belladonna's only friend is losing his life-force; the garden that feeds her is dying; and her house ghost goes poltergeist. To save her neighbors and friends and prove her innocence, she must travel to the Otherworld where butterflies have razor wings and where her worst fears will come to life.

EXCERPT
The mob on the other side of the wrought iron fence wore no tri-cornered hats or starched bonnets.  They didn’t brandish pitchforks or flaming torches. Hell, they didn’t even bring a preacher to drive the Devil out.  Still, they had come to flush out a witch and the witch was me.

They were thirty all together, gathered outside my gate under the two California live oaks that shade the sidewalk in
midday.  I had to squint into the still hot mid-October sun to study their unfamiliar faces.  The mob included several dwarves.  The youngest dwarf must have been in her forties, a tiny woman that for some reason wore a yellow, red and blue Snow White dress with an appliquéd picture of Snow White on the chest.  She didn’t look like a typical dwarf: no classically high forehead and her arms and legs were proportionate.  She was holding a fluffy purple teddy bear by a front paw and sucking her thumb.

In the sun my forehead sweated under the straw hat.  A mocking bird’s harsh chirrup burst from the oak on the right, piercing as a car horn. I flinched.

I don’t much like or trust people in large groups - doing time in Greenville State Prison for Women had taught me that.  In prison the exercise yard is the mostdangerous place to be: too many inmates in one area, too many chances to be
  stabbed with a shiv made from a sharpened toothbrush handle or from melted and hardened Styrofoam cups.

BLURB: Andy Reed is a fast-talking, high-flying building developer and has been in love exactly one time in his life. Dr. Rosemarie Piper has not only been his best friend since childhood, she is the most highly respected upcoming conservation biologist in the northeast who can, also, hold her own in a bar fight. Rose learned her love for conservation from her mother. She learned her love for Andy through a lifetime of memories and connections. What she had never learned was she was the product of a brutal assault by a serial rapist and extortionist. Rose’s mother worked for twenty-six years to keep Rose’s identity hidden. Now, Andy vows to keep their polar differences from ripping them apart while keeping her safe and catching a killer.

Review:
Flying in the Shadows by R.T. Wolfe is the second book in the Black Creek series. This contemporary romance introduces Rose Piper a heroine as fiery as her hair. Rose Piper is unusual; she knows part of it had to do with her father, the man her mother will only refer to as a bad man. She has never met or even learned his name, and often wonders about her mother’s secretive behavior.

 Rose Piper only wants two things to work with birds and to get her best friend, Andy Reed to notice her. She had a possibility of doing the first, but the second, not in her lifetime. Her best bud, Andy, likes the blond cheerleader, high maintenance type. The same type who ridicules Rose for her tomboy ways and plain appearance.

 Andy Reed thought he knew what he wanted. That was until he returned home to take his cheerleader diva girlfriend to the prom. He realizes his entire family dislikes his choice of a date. He’s beginning to rethink the whole situation too, especially after he sees Rose on the arm of another guy in her prom finery.

 Complications take the form of going to different schools. The biggest issue is the one Rose doesn’t know about, her father. He’s on the scene, but she doesn’t realize it, but her mother does. Her mother’s one goal is to get Rose safely to college and away from danger.

This fast, complex and suspenseful book caught my attention from the first paragraph. The chemistry between Andy and Rose worked well. I did not feel like I was reading a young adult book because the plot basically picked up when they were teens.  A few plot holes troubled me. In the beginning, Rose’s father breaks into the home and mentions two girl bedrooms indicating two sisters. We go through many stages of Rose’s life without any interaction with her sister. I thought her father was wrong until mention of the sister pops up eight years later. Then there is the fact that her stepfather is a detective, and yet he is unaware his wife is being threatened.

 Flying in the Shadows is an amazing tale, which is sure to rivet all readers. It is a romance, but it is much more. It is more a story of life, and how people managed with the help of one another make it through. I highly recommend it.

Flying in Shadows/Chapter 15
excerpt

 “Hot, built and sexy is here.” Grace chided as she popped a canapé in her mouth.

“I told you; he’s all yours.” Rose shrugged slightly, watching him laugh with his brother from her peripheral
vision.

 “Tempting, but I have a date.” Grace gestured to the snack table as said date tipped over a bowl of dipped chocolates onto the white linen tablecloth.

Rose noticed Andy and his date as they walked toward a table holding the shrimp and sushi samples.

Grace elbowed her playfully in the ribs. “It’s the knight. Don’t kick him in the face this time. He saved the
cranes.”

“I didn’t … kick him the face.” She wasn’t sure what was more humiliating, striking out at him after she told the crowd not to touch anyone, or missing. “And if you call him that one more time, I’ll kick you in the face.”

Grace laughed and threw her head back along with the rest of her flute, then headed for her date.

Feeling petty, Rose made her way to Andy and rolled her eyes behind his back at the, of course, drop-dead gorgeous blonde that was with him. She put a hand on his shoulder to get his attention. Stupid move.

His face was tight as he turned to look at the hand on his jacket, then softened when he followed it up to lock eyes with her. They stood there for just a moment. But, it was enough. And it hurt. Damn it, Rose. Sheer determination had her primly lifting her chin before she spoke, “Hello, Duncan, Andy. I … suppose I owe you gratitude. And … an
apology.”

 One of the many waiters who carried flutes of champagne ventured close to them. She rarely drank but looked longingly at the sweet, calming bubbles. Andy took two and handed one to his date.

 “Apology?”

So predictable.

Tucking some loose strands of hair behind her ear, she played along. “For, you know. The other day, or week or
whatever.”

 “No. I don’t know.” He took the glass and lifted it to his lips, hiding a grin.

Taking the higher ground, she elaborated, “I apologize for misunderstanding your intentions in the purchase of the reserve and, and thank you for going out of your way to interfere, or intercede I should say.”

Andy held out his flute. She forced herself to look at him, then absently took the champagne from his hand and tilted back a long drink.

 “Anything else?” he added.

 She looked at his date. Her eyes were darting between them. Rose took another drink. “And for trying to kick you in the face.”

 He placed his hand on her exposed shoulder and squeezed.“Try a new move next time.” And walked away.

 She sighed and closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she looked down at the empty flute in her hand. “Son of a bitch.”

Storm Dancer is a dark-epic fantasy novel.  It deals with dark issues and may not be suitable for young readers.

 STORM DANCER
 By Rayne Hall

BLURB:
Demon-possessed siege commander, Dahoud, atones for his atrocities by hiding his identity and protecting women from war's violence -but can he shield the woman he loves from the evil inside him?

Principled weather magician, Merida, brings rain to a parched desert land. When her magical dance rouses more than storms, she needs to overcome her scruples to escape from danger.

Thrust together, Dahoud and Merida must fight for freedom and survival. But how can they trust each other, when hatred and betrayal burn in their hearts?
'
Storm Dancer' is a dark epic fantasy. British spellings. Caution: this book contains some violence and disturbing situations. Not recommended for under-16s.

 EXCERPT:

Even in the shade of the graffiti-carved olive tree, the air sang with heat. Dahoud listened to the hum of voices in the tavern garden, the murmured gossip about royals and rebels. If patrons noticed him, they would only see a young clerk sitting among the lord-satrap's followers, a harmless bureaucrat. Dahoud planned to stayharmless.

The tavern bustled with women - whiteseers hanging about in the hope of earning a copper, traders celebrating deals, bellydancers clinking finger cymbals - women who neither backed away from him nor screamed.

The youngest of the entertainers wound her way between the benches towards their table, the tassels on her slender hips bouncing, the rows of copper rings on her sash tinkling with every snaky twist. Since she seemed nervous, as if it was her first show, he sent her an encouraging smile. Ignoring him, she shimmied to Lord Govan.

The djinn slithered inside Dahoud, stirring a stream of fury, whipping his blood into a hot storm. Would she dare to disregard the Black Besieger? What lesson would he teach to punish her insolence?

Dahoud stared past her sweat-glistening torso, the urge to subdue her washing over him in a boiling wave. For three years, he had battled against the djinn's temptations. To indulge in fantasies would batter his defences and breach his
resistance. He focused on the flavours on his tongue, the tart citron juice and the sage-spiced mutton, on the tender texture of the meat.

BLURB:
 Supernatural Branch of Law Enforcement empath Ella Walsh sucks memories from people's heads. The job fills her mind with others' nightmares and leaves her with little time for love, but if she doesn't pair off with a mate of the government's choosing soon, the psychic blowback will destroy her powers and her sanity.

The last time shapeshifting SBLE superstar Vadim Morosov worked with an empath, he got her killed and himself assigned to a desk. He worries about taking on another partner, but helping Ella track down an
empath killer might be his only chance to save his career.

Naturally, the government decides to throw them together. They resist at first, but they can't deny the simmering heat between them. As the killer's strikes grow closer to home, their bond gets tighter. And when the murderer finally traps Ella, her developing link with Vadim might be the only thing that can save her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
 “I think the question you should be asking yourself, Ms. Walsh, is why you feel so threatened by me.”
She screeched to a halt again. “Threatened, by you?”
 “Yes. I think you’ve got used to getting your own way in that office, and you don’t like anyone else coming in and questioning anything you say.”
 “And I think you’re talking out of your ass.”
 “I don’t like incompetence, Ms. Walsh, and I don’t like working with empaths on the brink of a break- down. I’ll work with you because I have no choice, but I’ll be questioning everything that comes out of your mouth, double and triple checking it and, if necessary, taking my concerns to the very top to make sure I’m heard so I don’t get left holding the can when everything blows up.”
 She stared into his eyes and for the first time in her life seriously contemplated drawing her weapon and shooting a fellow professional. But he’d probably like it if she did that, and she still had no way of knowing if he
could actually be killed.
 Instead, she gave him her best professional smile. “I’m glad you shared your concerns with me, Morosov. I appreciate your input and will consider each and every one of your points very carefully.”
