What is the working title of your next book?
What I Thought Was True is due to come out in Spring, 2014.
Where did the idea come from for the book?¨
I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of image vs. reality, what people think is true, vs. what is true and how on earth to tell the difference. Also how you see your past versus how it really was. Especially when you are a teenager. I felt so awkward and as though everyone knew that, everyone was cooler. But having reconnected to high school friends, I realize that we all felt that way.
What genre does your book fall under?
I think it’s still young adult. I’d actually be really interested in writing “New Adult” because I think that whole time of your life where you are out on your own, trying so hard to figure things out and thinking you should have it all put together already is a fascinating one.
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
I sort of picture Lucas Till for Cass. For Gwen...Daniela Ruah. They are both a little old for the parts. I didn’t have any actors in my head when I wrote this, so this question is hard...
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Gwen Castle thinks this is the summer she can escape her “biggest mistake ever” but it turns out to be the summer she has to confront him...and herself.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
It will be Penguin-Dial for Young Readers.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
Actually, this has taken me longer than any book I’ve ever written. I am used to six months, tops, from idea to finished draft. This has been a year.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I’m not sure. Not in an “I’m just so original” way, but in a sense that the reasons I wrote this story came from nowhere. It was actually really hard to write because I had trouble getting into the head of the heroine who made choices I would never have made. It’s been a serious challenge.
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
I just thought one day how it would be to be a couple who had “gotten it wrong” and if you could ever make it right again.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
What intrigues me most about this book is the question of whether you can fix your past. Gwen, the heroine, has made bad choices. Can she walk back and remake them?
