BLURB:
J.D. Sterling, the sexy star of country music, had come back home to McKenna Springs, Texas. Years before, he had left to chase his dream and had succeeded. His life was almost perfect. Almost. He was still missing the part of his heart he had left behind…Mandy Lawson.

Amanda Lawson had changed from the young, innocent Mandy…the teenager madly in love with the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Heartbreak and tragedy would do that to a person. She was determined to keep her well-ordered, work-driven life on the successful path she had fought to achieve on her own. No singing cowboy with a devil’s smile in his green eyes and a sexy body in tight jeans was going to be allowed close enough to break her heart again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I have other business in town also,” Amanda spoke up. “I don’t know why I was called out here but…”
“Because I want you.” Those jade green eyes pinned her to her spot. J.D.’s choice of words knocked the air out of Amanda’s lungs for a moment. Did he think that he could turn that look on her, along with that famous half-grin that sent deep grooves down his cheeks and made fingers itch to touch them and females swoon at his feet?  He was still the lying, no good cowboy who had played her for a fool and then left her behind when the bright lights beckoned. He wanted her? Well, he'd had her once, but never again.
Cold blue eyes pinned him. “People don’t always get what they want, J.D. But sometimes they do get what they deserve.”
When Mandy stood looking at him with those blue eyes, where once there had been the warmth of love glowing in them for him, there was now a cool curtain, devoid of anything but a banked anger mixed with a dash of indifference. For some reason, he felt he had been judged and found lacking in her estimation. He definitely had to regroup. There was another battle ahead, and he had fought many in his lifetime and won each of them. This would be the most important one. Losing was not an option.
Disguised with the Millionaire
BLURB:
She came to the company to find a Killer
Kate Meyers finds herself grief stricken after the news of her brother’s death at a construction site owned by the wealthy Trent Farrington. After speculation of faulty equipment and wrongdoing, the police eventually clear his company. Kate takes it upon herself to find whoever was the hand behind her brother’s demise and lands a job with the Florida Corporation to do her own investigation. When she meets Trent, Kate instantly dislikes and distrusts the strikingly handsome millionaire and thinks he's involved. She can’t wait to get evidence against him. Her greatest pleasure would be to see him pay for what he’s done—behind bars.
 Trent Farrington finds himself intrigued by the company’s newest employee, but previous bad experiences with women have taught him to be cautious. However, he is drawn to the alluring beauty, but he’s puzzled that she seems to hate him for some unknown reason. He’s used to women throwing themselves at him, and her attitude shocks him and is refreshing all at the same time.
 While Kate searches for the evidence to implicate Trent, she has to work closely with him.  However, the information she uncovers isn’t exactly adding up against him. She dislikes how her traitorous body reacts whenever he is near, although he appears to enjoy her reaction immensely. She vows to leave the company as soon as she collects the evidence, but she soon learns nothing is as it seemed… Whoever is involved might be an outright killer!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:

 The cool tempered woman Trent had met earlier in the lobby walked into the office, wearing her frumpy suit, glasses, and her golden hair in that tight bun––like something his older secretary would wear.

 Was the haughty plain Jane hired to help him work out what his grandfather thought were his personal problems? The only real problem he had was an old man trying to run his life.

 His grandfather rose from his desk. “Dr. Meyers, this is my grandson, Trent Farrington.”

 Looking down his nose, Trent studied her, then he rechecked her application. He frowned. Thirty-four years old? She didn’t look a day over twenty-four. What he could see of her skin looked as fresh as a newly bloomed rose.

 “It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Farrington,” she said in a cool voice.

Trent gave her a lazy nod and watched closely. His name hadn’t produced the dollar sign effect he was used to, instead, she gave him a disdainful look.

 It was hard to be certain with those thick glasses. However, she had gray eyes—like the morning mist—and clearly, contempt for him now flashed in those eyes. Why?

 At his intent perusal, her full lips compressed into a grim line.

 He’d been right for she couldn’t be any less intrigued by him. He almost laughed out loud. His grandfather’s latest ploy to throw another potential bride at him had backfired. You hired the wrong one this time, Grandpa.

 Forcing a smile, Trent extended his hand…

Tell us about yourself:
I am a first time published author and writing books is quite the turnaround from my background in finance! I am the mother of an amazing son who is currently over in Denmark, thanks to the Rotary Club exchange program. I have two dogs named Piggs and Diggs. Piggs is a fat, adorable Puggle who eats like a machine and loyal to the end. Diggs is an extremely long Corgi who loves his mama, but when it comes to other dogs he is kind of crabby.

What was your first book?
Two Worlds, Two Men which is a time travel romance and great fun!

Describe your first break.
I don’t really have anything come to mind.

What is your favorite genre to read? To write?

You will probably find me reading non-fiction more than fiction as I adore learning about new things. As far as writing, I think fiction is pretty fun to write because of the creative juices it allows you to develop creating imaginative characters.

What makes a protagonist interesting?

That you have the ability to watch them grow as the story unfolds. In addition, I also think we can see ourselves in the character or something we relate to about them.

What is the best thing about being a writer?

The mere gift of inspiring others. The broad creativity. To be able to muster up pages of words anywhere in the world and not be limited to a desk or time clock.

What is the worst thing?
Unpredictable when it comes to income!

Pantser or plotter?

I am both. I outline in my head and only actually write it if the series of events are getting clustered in my mind. Otherwise, I wing it with only a scratch pad with a few highlights I don’t want to forget.

What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.
I am currently getting my non-fiction book edited so that I can find a home for it. The book is about the missing links to manifesting our dreams, in my case, to become published. It is not geared just toward writing, but for anyone running on half mass in life and knows they want and deserve more. The difference with this book is that I wrote while I was in the struggle itself of changing my self-defeating thoughts into ones of success and abundance. There is a lot of suggestions on the need to stay disciplined and other traits I continually failed to do which caused me years of heartbreak and failure.

Just for fun

Cat or dog person?

Piggs and Diggs would be pretty mad if I replied anything but dogs!

Favorite food?

Nachos

Favorite book?

Anything by Wayne Dyer

Favorite movie?

Under the Tuscan Sun

Favorite vacation destination (you just have to want to go there)

Europe

Thanks, for talking to Writer Wonderland. I’m tempted to go out and rent Under the Tuscan Sun, especially because it's winter.

BLURB:
Jocelyn and Neely are having a perfectly pleasant dinner at the Sheep Heid Inn when it happens: Jocelyn suddenly finds herself sitting across the table, not from Neely, but a strange man dressed in medieval garb. This man is no apparition. His eyes, the deepest brown, clearly look on her in intimacy; his touch causes her pulse to rise.  Jocelyn realizes two things: from his clothes, he is clearly an aristocrat, and that she, Jocelyn Stewart, seems to be in some sort of romantic relationship with him! Minutes later Jocelyn returns to Neely, in the present day, weak and terrified. Together they begin to unravel the forgotten past and find themselves facing the reality of medieval Scotland. A strange world steeped in folklore and superstition; where life begins and often ends with the sword. As Jocelyn travels back to medieval times she learns that the man she keeps seeing is no other than Sir Colin Campbell of the powerful Campbell Clan. When Jocelyn is with Colin, she wants never to leave his side; then she returns to the present and cannot imagine herself with anyone but Neely. Jocelyn struggles with a choice. Which man will gain her heart when both offer such different love? She is in love with two different men in two different worlds.

Excerpt One:
Jocelyn looked around for the driver who was supposed to be waiting for her arrival with a sign. She had hired someone to pick her up because, as an American and first-time visitor to Scotland, she had figured it would be less stressful.

She didn’t see the driver anywhere; then, just as she started feeling nervous, she saw a man holding a sign with her name on it. And what a man he was! He was broad shouldered, strong and had dark brown hair with reddish tints. He exuded masculinity like some cologne, and even across the airport, she thought she could smell it. Smoothing her unruly hair, she started to walk over to him.

The man, seeing her approach him, took a step toward her. “Are you, Jocelyn?”

When he spoke her name, she found herself frozen in place unable to respond. She’d heard this voice before; she knew this voice. This man spoke her name exactly like the dream she had had all those years ago! She had been stirred awake in bed by a voice of a man, who spoke her name with a Scottish accent. His voice was gentle and low; as if he wanted to gain her attention, but not cause her alarm. Jocelyn had clutched the sheets to her chest and stared out into the darkness of her bedroom almost feeling his intimate presence beside her. She lifted her hand up to her ear having sworn his warm breath had brushed her skin. Jocelyn remembered she had turned her head, anxiously, toward the pillow next to her and almost thought she would be looking into the eyes of a stranger; yet she had not been frightened. This man, his voice, somehow comforted her.

Now, she stood in the airport and caught her breath as she faced the man before her. Her eyes searched his face for something; though what it was she wasn’t sure. Jocelyn felt her heart beating so fast she was certain the man could hear it as memories flooded her mind of that night so long ago when he or someone spoke her name in the darkness. Was that the reason for her vacation to Scotland? Was she unconsciously trying to find the man?

Danny Dirks and the Heir of Pendragon

By

S.A. Mulraney
BLURB:
Danny Dirks wants nothing more than to play baseball in his father's orchard, but he's finding out that he is no ordinary boy. With the approach of his fifteenth birthday, Danny's begun hearing voices and seeing visions of his dead mother. He's also fairly certain that the cute girl next door is really a shape-shifting dragon. All of these things lead Danny to the discovery that he is the heir of the legendary Arthur Pendragon and the linchpin in a pact established between man and dragon centuries ago. Now, rogue dragons threaten that pact and the peace that comes with it. They aim to reopen the portal through which they originally came to Earth in order to bring back a rebel dragon army. It's up to Danny to learn to channel the power that is Excalibur and, with his new friends, prevent the portal from being opened.

Excerpt 1 (from Chapter 1)

Danny watched as the sun struggled to break through the thinning clouds over the cottage, which was busier now than it had been in years. Then he saw her. Statuesque to a fault, a slender figure in a light blue, long-sleeved, button-down top and jeans stood near the center of the garden as if she was a part of it. Her golden blonde locks waved ever so gently in the morning air. Her skin was so pale that she seemed to glow in the lone sunbeam that managed to fight through the clouds. On her small outstretched hand, Danny could see something flutter. Translucent wings moved slowly in the morning light. It was a dragonfly sitting contentedly in her hand. Danny watched, not realizing he was moving closer to the fence that separated the driveway from the garden. He could see her lips move, but he was too far away to hear what she was saying. Her almond shaped eyes seemed to delight in all that she beheld. He was transfixed by her. She pushed a stray lock of golden hair out of her eyes and smiled brightly at the delicate bug in her hand. Danny barely noticed his egg sandwich fall to the ground.

“Smooth move, Dan-o!” said a familiar voice from the end of the driveway.

The dragonfly sped from her hand as the girl’s head whipped towards him. His cover was blown. The girl’s demeanor changed instantly when her eyes fixed on Danny. He felt his stomach hit his knees. He had just raised his hand to wave hello when she turned and fled from the garden and into the house. A baby-faced man-child with dusty brown hair sidled up to Danny and Katy.

“Who…who was that? She’s…amazing,” Danny said, staring stupidly at the sandwich that now lay in ruins at his feet.

 “You always were a sucker for a blonde,” Katy said. “That’s the new foreman’s daughter. She has a younger sister about my age too. At least, that’s what Dad told me.”

 “Good job, Romeo.”

 Oliver Cline was a bit of a physical oddity. At fifteen, he was six-five and two hundred and fifty pounds. Built like his father and raised to toss bales of hay, Ollie was made to be a farm hand. Though not fat by any stretch of the imagination, there was an element of softness to his physique which, combined with his height, made him the most self-aware person Danny and Katy knew. He lived on the farm across the street from the Dirks’ place and had grown up with Danny and Katy. The three of them were more like siblings than simply friends. He looked down at the egg sandwich on the ground. “You gonna eat that?”

“Um…no,” Danny said absently.

“And neither will you!” Katy scolded when Ollie looked optimistic.

**** A MAGICAL SERIES ****
Danny Dirks and the Heir of Pendragon

Do you like Camelot and the Legend of King Arthur? Then you’ll love Danny Dirks and The Heir of Pendragon. School’s out and Danny is looking forward to an uneventful summer full of baseball and daydreams. What he doesn’t understand is reoccurring visions of his dead mother, voices in the wind, and strange musings on the girl next door.

Things are much more than they seem on the surface. The reader discovers along with Danny that there is much at stake than an earned run average. This tale is the first and obviously integral to understanding the series. Talking dragons, magical powers, and possible world devastation should appeal to young adults and adults alike.

Danny Dirks and the Heir of Pendragon would be a tremendous gift for a Harry Potter fan looking for a new series to love.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:
In second grade, Scott Mulraney wrote a series of comic strips called Peanut (a peanut with arms and legs) and Stickman (self explanatory) because those were the two things he could draw with some consistency. He ripped off every story line from Garfield, but his family thought it was cute. In high school, he wrote a rip-off of Red Dawn, changed the location to his NJ home town, and essentially made himself the lead character. It involved finding a super-secret helicopter with a strategically placed instruction manual. How convenient. During high school, he devoured Stephen King novels, but never pursued writing anything of substance. Then, in an event that would shape the rest of his life, Scott found himself kicked out of college, jobless, and relatively friendless. He turned to writing poetry and eventually short stories followed. Writing had brought him back from the brink and he pursued and eventually earned a degree in Literature with a focus on creative writing.

 He completed his first novel (not ripped off from anyone) after five years, in 2010. After waffling about what to do with it, he self-published the suspense thriller under the pen name Andy Rane. A moderate success, for independent standards, Scott then followed with the first draft of Danny Dirks. Completed in about six months, he knew he had something special and wasn't quite prepared to self publish the novel.

Fast forward to 2014 and the changing markets convinced him that he could provide everything to his stories that traditional publishers could. Danny Dirks and the Heir of Pendragon is his first full-length young adult novel and one of many stories he hopes to tell.

He currently lives with his wife and son in his home state of New Jersey.

Excerpt One:
An older man with a huge Rolex on his left wrist moved in on the bar and asked for a drink. His arm bumped Kyra’s, sloshing tequila out of her highball. I touched her elbow, urging her to move off to the side, and as she turned I got a good look at her bared back and a scrolling tattoo at the bottom of it. Something ignited and flared, and suddenly I wasn’t thinking about small talk anymore. If I had my head on straight, I might have heard the warning bells going off in my brain. The rare portent that life gave you when something was about to change if you made the wrong choice.

 But only if you made the conscious decision to see it.

 “You here alone?”

 I heard the words but didn’t connect that they were coming from my mouth. I was on autopilot now. Wanting to forget a broken heart. The fact that Kyra didn’t look anything like Lottie, the woman I’d loved and lost, made things much more tempting.

 “Yeah.” Another smile. Another sip. “Bad breakup. Left the boyfriend in Paris. Don’t really want to be here. Doing it anyway because it’s in the job description.” Kyra finished her tequila. “My company also donates to the charity.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
On January 18, 2012, we all convened in the courthouse for the Motion for Parenting Time hearing. My dad and I arrived with my attorney, but Tyler loved an audience so he brought his dad, step-mom, and his new on-again off-again girlfriend, Heather. Tyler walked in with his posse in tow, cocky as hell. It took all of two minutes for the judge to knock him off his feet.
The Judge addressed our respective attorneys. “Why are we here?”
 “Your honor,” Tyler’s attorney began, “my client has clearly been denied his parenti—”
 The Judge didn’t even let him finish. “How?” She turned to my attorney. “Don?”
 “Your honor, as you can see in the divorce decree, there was supposed to be a review when the minor child turned twelve-months-old. The Defendant has ignored that review.”
 “I—if I may, your honor,” Tyler’s attorney sputtered.
 “I see the review in the decree. It’s here in black and white,” she told Tyler’s attorney. “What is the problem? Why didn’t you understand the review? Your client signed the divorce decree.”
 Tyler’s attorney tried again. “But your honor—”
 The judge cut him off. “There is to be a review conducted by the Friend of the Court referee assigned to the parties. Until then, the Defendant will continue his parenting time schedule as agreed upon in the divorce decree. Dismissed.”
 And that was it. After eight police reports and numerous harassing text messages, phone calls, and e-mails, we won. As Don and Tyler’s attorney went to speak with the clerk to file the necessary paperwork, Don told us to wait for him outside the courtroom.
 As we exited the courtroom, the hallway was so packed with people that my dad and I were only able to find enough space to lean against the wall. We were talking about the court proceedings when we looked up at saw Tyler and his new girlfriend standing right across from us.
 “Why do you lie about everything?” Tyler screamed.
 Heather walked up to me and stood about an inch from my face. “As a mother myself, you should be happy that Tyler is the father of your child.”
 My jaw dropped. “I’m sorry but I don’t know you.”
 She smirked. “Well you’re going to get to know me, bitch.”
 Tyler made a big show of pulling her from me like I was going to punch her or something. By this time, everyone in the hallway was watching us. We were pure entertainment.
 Heather continued her rant. “Two times in the psych ward, Megan? What a great mother you are.”
 “Where is your mom, the real mother of our child?” Tyler screamed. “She’s the one who takes care of Madelyne.”
 My dad and I tried to move away from Tyler and Heather but they followed us.
 “Awww…” Heather mocked. “Do you have to take a Xanax because of your anxiety?”
 “Go take your Xanax and sleeping pills, you drug addict,” Tyler shouted.
 Finally, Don emerged from the courtroom and pulled us into a quiet corridor. He explained that I needed to call our referee to set-up a meeting to discuss a visitation schedule. I told Don about the verbal assault by Tyler and Heather. Don said he would call Tyler’s attorney to let him know that Heather would not be allowed in my house.
 Upon leaving the courthouse, Heather screamed, “See you on Sunday, Megan.”
 I turned toward her and said calmly, “I don’t know you, but you are not welcome in my home.”
 That night, Tyler sent me multiple texts attacking my mothering skills, my supposed drug addictions, how he was going to fight for joint custody of Madelyne, how Heather would be accompanying him for his visitations, and a barrage of other insults:
 “Get a life already”
 “Don’t you have something better to do than wasting your parents’ money?”
 “Go take your pills and relax, oh yeah, then your parents would have to watch our daughter. Oh yeah, they already do.”
 “Go talk to your friends. Oh yeah, you don’t have any because of how crazy you are.”
 “Interesting to know you’ve been to the hospital a couple of times. You really need to get it together.”
 “Better go call your lawyer and make up some more stuff about me.”
 “Don’t be mad at your sorry life.”
 “I am sure living with Mom and Dad the rest of your life will be fun.”
 “When you get a job, then you can pay me child support. Fun.”
 I finally had to turn my phone off at midnight.
 Blurb
Antony Love is the quintessential responsible oldest brother of a boisterous, Italian/Irish family, placed in charge at a young age by his parents who are busy running the family business. He manages his siblings with a fair but iron hand, until his life is shattered by personal tragedy leaving him the shell of the man he once was.
 When outspoken matriarch Lindsay Halloran Love falls ill, the youngest brother Aiden shows up at Antony's garage, having dropped out of school (again), needing work and a place to crash. Antony provides both, with three caveats: "Don't smoke in my truck, don't be late for work, and don't mess with my girlfriend."
But Aiden Love, budding novelist, gets one glimpse of Rosalee Norris, young widow of Antony's lifelong best friend and all bets are off.
 Set in horse country near Lexington, Kentucky, The Love Brothers Series is a saga of family devotion that runs as wide and deep as the Ohio River--except on Sundays when brothers Antony, Kieran, Dominic and Aiden work out their frustrations on the basketball court, Love brother style.
Love Garage Excerpt:
Love Garage opened bright and early the next morning, a Saturday, a day Aiden had hoped to spend recovering.
“I get so many oil changes and random small jobs on Saturdays, it doesn’t make sense to be closed and let the jackasses with the Quickilube at Walmart get the business,” Antony insisted when Aiden groaned with dismay upon being awakened after two hours of drunken sleep. It didn’t help that the awakening occurred at the business end of a thrown pillow. “Get up, Romeo. You owe me rent money.”
He did, slowly, queasily hitting a shower, sore all over, his skin mottled from bug bites. But nothing topped the glorious agony of a bourbon hangover like the one that had him firmly in its evil grasp.
He slouched out the door, cursing Antony, cursing Tricia, cursing her ex-husband for throwing her in his path last night. But mostly cursing his own weak-ass uselessness. He rested his head against the cool comfort of the truck window until Antony hit a bump or two, which sent extra pain jolting down his spine.
“Sorry,” his brother muttered, glancing over at him.
“No, you’re not.”
“Got me there. And you’d better warn me if you’re about to toss your cookies. I won’t have that in my vehicle, got me?”
Aiden rubbed his neck and nodded, swallowing the urge to throw up all over the pristine interior on principal. “Why d’you hate me so much? You used to like me.” He stared over at his brother, heart thumping, ears humming, throat closing up with nausea. He despised waking up still drunk.
“I don’t hate you.” Antony turned onto the main road headed into town.
“Could’ve fooled me. You’re a real asshole anymore. Worse than Dom.”
Antony merely shrugged, not rising to that tried-and-true bait. So they spent the rest of the ride to the garage in silence. Once there, Antony sat gripping the wheel. Aiden waited, hoping he’d get something out of him—something he would assure him that the man he thought he remembered as the protective, funny, and loving guy he’d grown up with still existed inside the guy walking around wearing Antony’s skin.
Finally, he let go of the wheel, exhaled, and squared his shoulders as if prepping for battle. Aiden made a mental note to talk to Kieran about how badly Antony had descended into his life of non-stop mourning and jerk-hood.
“So, Rosalee, not putting out for you or what? You need to get laid maybe? Knock the edge off?”
The glare Aiden got for saying those particular words did make him worry Antony might punch his aching head through the passenger-side window.
He clenched his jaw in the way Aiden remembered from their childhood. “That is so far outside the realm of your business as to be in another galaxy. Get to work and don’t say her name to me again.”
And with that, Aiden was left with the fleeting thought that mentioning Rosalee directly was probably not a good idea. He surely didn’t need Antony to guess that her name was on his lips, or front and center of his mind.
He shook his head—a Bad Plan because it summoned the pounding agony back with a vengeance. Groaning, he climbed out and shuffled over to the door.
A new day began at Love Garage.
Blurb
The smoldering intensity of first love ~ the forbidden fantasy of temptation ~ the cold hard facts of real life.
When one man’s hopes are dashed apart in a split second after years spent chasing a dream, he returns home to Kentucky furious at the world and everyone around him.
 Kieran Francesco is the middle son of the volatile, tight-knit Halloran-Love family. His role as peacemaker and the one true athlete is well established. He now faces life devoid of the sport he adores after a horrific, career-ending accident, which places him in a new and entirely uncomfortable position—that of the brother with no future.
Over the course of a few tumultuous months Kieran is plunged back into life at the center of the Love family, where he must cope with one self-destructive brother, one ill-timed reconnection to an old flame and a series of bad choices that land him in more trouble than he’d ever known existed.
COACH LOVE, book 2 of The Love Brothers, a family saga of sibling loyalty that runs as deep and wide as the Ohio River—at least until Sunday, when Antony, Kieran, Dominic and Aiden work out their frustrations at the weekly Love brother pick-up basketball game.
Coach Love EXCERPT:
As he drove the twenty or so miles from his parents’ house into town Kieran’s head began to clear. The windows were down and the tunes cranked. The sun shone. Signs of summer--one of his favorite seasons--were all around him. Parks packed with families, all the basketball courts and swimming pools overflowing. The sight of a gaggle of boys on bikes riding alongside him for a while, singing along with whatever random, crappy rap song currently polluted the airwaves made him smile.
“Hey, it’s Kieran Love!” one of the punks shouted after a few blocks. “Can you come over and shoot a few with us?”
 He waved and drove on, gratified but sad, the sound of their cheerful unhappiness at his refusal filling his ears, taking the stretch of four lane road at seventy miles an hour, pressing the gas pedal to the floor, the throaty, powerful roar of the car’s engine revving him from head to toe.
It would be all right because he and Melinda loved each other. They had from the moment they’d met. He passed some grandpa in a Toyota, as the deep green fields surrounded by picturesque white fences and dotted with horses filled both sides of his vision.
He’d been home and recuperating from radical knee surgery with the best prognosis he could hope for after such a nasty break--to walk normally, much less play the occasional pick up game. His depression had been deep, wide, and terrifying. He woke every day at his parents’ house, unwilling even to get out of bed, not that he could without help for the first few weeks.
 Antony had tossed a laptop computer at him one day when he’d been sulking, unshaven, and eating an entire bag of potato chips, something he’d not done since the age of ten when his fate--bound for basketball fame and fortune--had been determined.
 “Here, find a job, find a date, find something,” he’d said before yanking the empty chip bag away and smacking Kieran’s head hard enough to make his ears ring.
 “Ow. Leave me alone, asshole. I’m grievously injured,” he’d said, not caring about the swear-free zone he inhabited.
 “That’s three dollars young man,” his mother had called out from the kitchen.
 “You live with this, jerk, and see how you feel about finding ‘a date.’“ He’d hooked his fingers around the words, heart in his throat at how badly he’d wanted to call Cara right then.
 But by the next weekend he was caning and limping his way toward the door to some faux-fancy Italian restaurant in Lexington, rubbing his freshly shaved face and trying not to sweat through his dress shirt. The woman from the internet site sat at the bar, twirling an olive-laden swizzle stick in her martini glass, long, slim, bare legs crossed, feet encased in sky-high patent leather heels. He’d exhaled, beyond relived that he’d not been cat-fished by some troll, or worse, a dude.
 He’d hesitated then, something in him telling him to turn around and leave, fast. But at that moment, she’d flashed him the whitest, most perfect smile he’d ever seen and he’d been hooked. He still didn’t know how. They’d gone out for three weeks before she let him kiss her. It’d been another three weeks before he got anywhere near her tits. It had been a solid four months before he scored but that encounter had been, in a word, epic.
 Melinda liked to talk dirty, wear heels and a garter belt while he fucked her. Loved doing it with all the lights on and in semi-public places. She gave head like a pro at first, before he’d given her an engagement ring.
 Her bitchiness had come across as extreme decisiveness, sort of hot in way, he’d admit, since he tended toward the spontaneous and unplanned--”wishy washy” as he now understood it thanks to Melinda’s re-categorization of his personality. Her tight grip on her emotions and her surroundings, the OCD way she ordered her life did grate on him at times but he figured she tolerated his innate sloppiness and willingness to wake on a Sunday without a plan in place for the rest of the day. When he realized he sat across from her at some overpriced, hipster restaurant near her office after going out with her for eight months, ready to present her with a ring he could barely afford, it had shocked him without seeming to even faze her.
 “Well, of course I’ll marry you, but you’ve got to find a better job,” she’d drawled as she sipped her champagne.
 “A new job?” He’d gotten the teaching gig at his old high school and couldn’t imagine any job he’d want or like better. She made six figures for Christ’s sake, at least he thought she did.
 Elated, drunk with lust and achievement, he’d tried to get his long legs adjusted under the small table jammed between all the others and covered with small plates of “tapas” which, best he could tell were “appetizers” only twice the price and half the helpings.
 “I’ll do anything you want, Melinda. You saved me, honest to God you did.”
 She’d fluttered her inky black lashes and gazed at him with an expression that convinced him he’d made the drastic move for the right reasons. The following year had been a combination of frustration, anger and high school level blue balls. The double drama Antony and Aiden had foisted on the Love family during that time hadn’t helped but it had distracted him. He’d taught his classes, helped out with the basketball team pro bono without telling Melinda and had been happier than he’d ever been as a pro athlete.
 The fact that she maintained her uber-bitch persona around his family killed him. But he was hooked.
 Still.
Mostly.
Blurb:
Every family has one—the black sheep, the problem child, the prodigal. But Dominic Sean Love could teach all of those guys a lesson or two. Stuck in the middle of a boisterous group of siblings, he’s given “acting out” a new meaning from the day he drew his first breath.
While he’s the one son who follows his strict father’s footsteps into the Love family business, he’s also the one who butts heads with him the hardest. Their epic clashes are the stuff of family legend. But they have made peace and work side by side to take Love Brewing to the next level of success.
Until Dominic does the one thing his father can never forgive.
Diana Brantley has been Dominic’s friend, girlfriend and ex-girlfriend so many times she’s lost count. When he shows up at the farm she’s slowly transforming into a wildly popular farm-to-table resource for restaurants all over the U.S. her first impulse is to shoot first and ask questions later. But she doesn’t. And their lives entwine once more, for good, bad and ugly.
Working (pre-edited) Excerpt:
Dominic would give anything be able to talk to Kieran. They’d gotten close in the last months since he’d required a rather alarming rescue from a jail down in Georgia and his brother had shown up, very few questions asked.  But no, Kieran had his own issues and likely at that very moment was busy trying to convince his high school girlfriend to marry him, even as she stood dressed and ready to marry someone else.
He had to squeeze his eyes tight shut to banish images of Kent for the zillionth time.
 “You need dry clothes,” Diana said, interrupting his pity party.
He shrugged and kept his gaze fixed on the view of rain. “Your garden looks like shit. When’s the last time you bothered to pull weeds?”
She snorted. He smiled. He used to love it when she’d do that. He’d honestly had no intention of showing up here today. The Brantley farm remained way off the beaten track, if the track around Lucasville could be considered “beaten” in any way. When he’d raced out of the stifling hot sanctuary and hotwired Kieran’s car he’d driven off without a single thought in his addled head other than “escape.”
But when he’d finally released his death grip on the steering wheel he’d looked through the windshield and found himself facing the old two-story farmhouse where he’d lost his virginity—not to Diana but to her sister Jen, an older version of the girl he’d been hanging around with since God was a boy. The whooshing sound that had deafened him for the last couple of days had receded ever so slightly at the sight of the place.
He’d not been anywhere near it in over six years, ever since he’d run out here to find Diana when Gina had bolted for New York. Her reaction to his surprise visit had been decidedly less hostile then. He groaned and ran a hand down his wet face.
No one to blame but yourself for this reception, numb nuts.
 As if on cue, the dog whined and bumped his leg with its huge muzzle.
“Bossy bitch,” he said softly, giving her another scratch behind the ears. The animal gazed at him adoringly. Yeah, dogs always did love him. He glanced up and caught sight of Diana tugging on a shirt that looked way too big for her. The sight of it sent a thrill of something he didn’t want to acknowledge as jealousy down his spine.
You have less than no place being jealous of anything about her, he reminded himself. She stared at him as she buttoned up the light blue, obviously man-sized shirt. He had to restrain himself from blinking too fast at the onrushing memories that threatened to mow him down.
“Put on a few pounds eh Di?” he said, leaning back against the rough barn wall. The dog practically crawled up onto the hay bale and laid its head in his lap. Damn thing weighed over eighty pounds and smelled like rancid pond water, but he didn’t stop it.
“Fuck you,” she said, turning away and giving him a lovely view of the backs of her slim, tanned legs. “Come up to the house and get some dry clothes on, you dumbass.” She stood there, wearing that shirt that made his chest hurt, pondering where it had come from, her legs bare and beautiful. It made him want to weep. He set his jaw and turned away from her.
“I missed you and your ladylike ways,” he said, almost absently, as he turned back to study the rain that pounded the window. “Ow!” The towel pop flicked his neck, then his thigh. “Damn girl, you on your period or what?” He rubbed his leg and noted that he was, indeed, soaked through and could use a change of clothes. Too bad he hadn’t thought of that when he ran away from what remained of his former life.
“I can feel your crybaby BS from clear across this barn,” she said.
He turned fast, angry at her words. But her gaze comforted him. And suddenly, he realized why he’d found himself here, on what could be labeled as the worst day of his sorry-ass thirty years.
“How’d marriage work out for ya,” he said, shoving the dog off his lap and getting to his feet.
“How d’you think? I mean, I’m sure it was the talk of the town.” She kept staring at him, not moving. For a split second, Dom found himself headed toward her, needing to feel her skin, taste her lips. But he stood, keeping the four or so feet between them, the dogs milling around their ankles making worried noises. An errant drop of water fell from a lock of hair over his eyes. The moment felt fraught and he cursed himself for causing her pain, again. And again.
“Well, I guess the guy was lucky to escape with his balls intact,” he said, finally. “You’re still as ugly as homemade sin,” he lied.
The corner of her lips lifted. He let himself exhale.
It was on now. And he knew she’d let him stay as long as he needed.
