(Due to the fact, I received the book today, a review will follow in about a week. I am SO looking forward to reading the book. MKW)
Ryan Malloy has lost it all. After his fiancée dies in a tragic accident, he enlists in the army, only to lose his best friend in a roadside bombing. Wracked with guilt and grief, Ryan finds life unbearable—until a job offer from his former commander gives him a glimmer of
hope. And in the tiny town of Perfect, Indiana, the man who thought he had nothing left to live for meets the only woman who can tempt him into risking his battered heart one last time...

Paige Langford has it all: wealth, beauty, and ambition. But when her boyfriend’s betrayal leads to the loss of her job and her reputation, she retreats to her brother’s rural Indiana home to regroup. There she meets Ryan Malloy, a gruff, hard-drinking loner whose surly temper can’t hide the haunted misery in his eyes. He is everything Paige
never wanted, yet he may be exactly what she needs—if only they can overcome their personal demons to forge a love strong enough to save them both.

She parked next to an old Chevy pickup—could it belong to Ceejay’s cousin?—grabbed her stuff and headed out back toward the carriage house. Praying their dog Sweet Pea wouldn’t sense her presence and
start barking, she tiptoed along the path from the gate to the door. All she had to go by was the scant light of the new moon.

So far, so good. Sweet Pea remained blissfully quiet. She dropped her bag on the concrete and rifled through the pockets of her purse for the key she’d stashed there. “Ah-hah. Got you.” She fumbled a few times in the darkness, trying to insert it into the lock. Finally she got the key in the right way, turned it, reached for the knob and pushed, just as light flooded the interior. The door was yanked from her grasp so suddenly she fell
inside, right into a naked man—a naked man wielding a gun.

“Aaah!”She squealed and scrambled back to regain her footing, staring in shock at the wild man before her. Shaggy blond hair hung down to his shoulders, and an untrimmed, tangled mess of a beard hid most of his
face. Panic-filled brilliant blue eyes were riveted on her with a haunted look
that stole her breath.

EXCERPT
Raising a hand to stroke his bald head, a tear slipped down Tommy's soft white cheek, and he turned his face into the pillow to muffle the sobs he knew were coming.

He felt something cool on the pillow against his cheek, and he raised his head, reaching his hand--the one without a needle in a vein--to feel for the object that had caused it. A shiny round coin seemed to glow in the darkness of the room and he took it in his palm, gazing at it in wonder. Was he still dreaming?

At that moment, his mummy re-entered the room and smiled to see him awake. "Hi Sweetie." He smiled back, knowing she'd put on her brightest smile for him; she always did. Her gaze dropped to the coin in his hand. "What have you got there?" she asked.

"Money," Tommy whispered, noticing the coin was no longer glowing but looked as dull and brown as an ordinary copper penny.

"Show me." His mummy held out her hand. Tommy obediently handed her the coin.

"Well, I've never seen a coin like this before,"she said. "Where on earth did you get it from?"

Tommy shrugged sleepily. "It was on my pillow."

His mummy gazed at him questioningly, and patted his hand. "You go back to sleep, darling." She put the coin on his bedsidetable. "This must be a good luck coin," she finally said as she sat on his bed, "and Lord knows we need all the luck we can get right now."

EXCERPT:

The edge of the blade felt like ice against her skin. One breath too deep, one movement—ever so slight—would give the knife a taste of her blood. It’s a part of the nightmare, she thought, even as she felt the breath of her attacker lightly touch her face.

The nightmares that had been plaguing her for weeks warned of this moment. Images, too terrifying to be real, flashed quickly across her mind’s eye in an instant replay of her recent night terrors. Running down a long, empty hallway, filled with doorways on either side, chased by some
unknown monster that knew her deepest fears. Running towards a movie, scrolling incessantly with images of those she loved most trapped in a fiery hell. Sepia-toned faces, twisted in pain, were a stark contrast to the blue, red and yellow of the flames engulfing them. The echoes of their screams filled the dark, never-ending hallway. She couldn’t look away and she couldn’t stop running; her only escape was straight ahead, towards the horror show.

So far, the nightmares ended with her sitting straight up in bed, breathing hard in a cold sweat. He hadn’t caught her yet.

The all too real feeling of cold steel pressed against her neck gave the nightmare an alternate ending. Kris tried to control her breathing so her attacker would think she slept. Her mind raced as she tried to think of a way to reach the loaded SIG waiting beneath the extra pillow beside her. She didn’t always keep a gun so handy, but recent events, including the dreams, made it a necessity.

“Wake up, Sleeping Beauty.” The familiar voice spoke the words softly in her ear.

Ever suspect advertising is the work of devils?

Picture
A chain of advertising agencies, a new breed of humans, and a fallen angel to worship... Andel Talistokov is known for his slick advertising agencies across the globe. He is a fallen angel that uses advertising as a weapon for Satan's work. His growing power emboldens him to break several of Hell's Commandments. Furious with his arrogance, Satan commands him to return to Hell after finding
his own replacement. Yezidism, an ancient angel worshiping religion, quietly
expands throughout the West. Armaros appears as a guest of honor during their ceremonies. He mates with young women to produce nephilim, a mixed race of humans and angels. They are alone and unprepared for their supernatural power.
Joanna Easterhouse, a recovering drug addict, steps out of prison shortly after her mother's fatal accident. She and her sister, Kim, unravel their mother's secretive past. Intrigued, they learn their bloodline is part of a celestial legacy. Both worlds collide. Halo of the Damned is a horrifying tale that weaves research together with suspenseful twists and turns.

ONE LUCKY COMMENTER WINS BEAUTIFUL PEACOCK NECKLACE
REVIEW
 ****
Dina Rae’s Halo of the Damned, a different type of paranormal, is published by Eternal Press. Instead of the retelling of Gods and
Goddesses, Ms. Rae decides to go with one of Satan’s own. As many of you have suspected after bombarded by images of perfect slender females in commercials, there is pure evil in advertising. This happens to be a devil named Andel’s tale.

Andel shows up in Wheaton, Illinois to do Satan’s bidding, or at least that’s the plan. Andel head up an advertising firm named Evil Empire. He’s so successful because he really knows how to use subliminal advertising to feed into people’s fear and inherent greed. Think Mad Men only more modern. The story opens with a recent murder, and not much rationale behind it. Perhaps, murder is what dark angels do. Like all advertising executives, Andel becomes full of himself and does not feel the need to follow his original orders.

Enter our female characters, who more than what they seem, and more than what they know. Joanna Easterhouse, talk about a telling name, her sister Kim, and her daughter Maria are a bit different. Unaware that they aren’t fully human, their psychic gifts come as a surprise, not necessarily a pleasant one either.

As you would expect Joanna takes a job at the Evil Empire and becomes
involved in Andel’s machinations. A battle for domination ensues. It takes place on the world stage and culminates in Wheaton. This fast paced, and sometimes gory, story takes advantage of the Yezidism, angel-worshipping religion to support its premise.

Halo of the Damned does have dark romantic elements rather like Wuthering Heights. Horror, paranormal, dark romance fans should all enjoy this book. From his creative cover by Dawne Dominique to its unusual storyline and stunning ending, it is a tale that is sure to stay with you.

EXCERPT:
Kim finished the mini-project and then hung the painting above
Maria’s headboard. She took a mental note to get the painting appraised and insured later on during the week. Both Kim and Joanna were eager to find out about their mother’s relics left behind at the Lake Geneva home. As promised, Kim looked up an old friend from high school, Doctor Sandra Jackson, who currently held a post at Loyola University. She hoped that her friend, Sandra, or one of her colleagues could identify the script and point Kim in the right direction in finding out its translation. If she was really lucky, they would be able to answer all of her questions about the unfamiliar items.

Kim quickly found Sandra online listed under the College of Arts
and Sciences. She called her at work, and Sandra was available to talk. They quickly caught up with each other’s lives until Sandra got down to
business.

“Kim, I’m so glad you called. Is this a purely social call or is there anything I can help you with?” Sandra asked, sensing that Kim was withholding something from her.

“Well, yes. I’m embarrassed to call after all these years of failing to keep in touch. And now when I could use your help, here I am. I’m a lousy friend. Please forgive me,” Kim begged.

“Kim, it’s okay. I haven’t called either. Please, I’d love the chance to help. What can I do?”

Kim remained as vague and elusive as possible, briefly describing some of the carvings found in the basement wall. She told Sandra she copied down the markings and wanted to know what they meant. She also described the old scroll, without commenting about the who’s, where’s, and when’s. She omitted telling Sandra about her mother. Lydia’s death would have tipped Sandra off as to where the items came from.

“Kim, this all sounds very mysterious. Please bring what you have and come around lunchtime. We’re all here in our cubicles. If I can’t help
you, I’m confident one of my colleagues can. See you tomorrow.”

Later that evening, Kim informed Joanna about the meeting with
the Loyola staff. “These heirlooms will bring us fame and fortune. They are our ‘holy grail’! I feel like Indiana Jones!” Joanna exclaimed.

“Don’t get too blissful. They might not be able to help,” Kim cautioned.

Overhearing the conversation, Maria became upset. “But Mom, who is gonna pick me up from school?”

“Holly’s mom is. You’re going to stay there until I get back, probably around dinner time,” Kim assured.

“Mommy, those people are strangers! You just can’t be showing them Grandma’s things! It’s not right! It’s not what she would have wanted!
Lonnie doesn’t trust your friend!” Maria’s petulance was escalating. In
desperation, she threw her aunt into the argument. “Auntie Jo, don’t let her do this! Especially Grandma’s scroll! It’s too dangerous!”

Although Joanna was uneasy about her niece’s behavior, she was not going to let a six year-old manipulate Kim’s and her plans. “Sweetie, your
mother and I are curious to what that stuff is. She is taking these things to a very smart bunch of people who may be able to help us. No one is going to wreck it or steal it,” she placated.

“I already know what it is! Grandma was an angel, or a nephilim! Why don’t you believe me?” Maria screamed as she raced up to her room.

EXCERPT
The mob on the other side of the wrought iron fence wore no tri-cornered hats or starched bonnets.  They didn’t brandish pitchforks or flaming torches. Hell, they didn’t even bring a preacher to drive the Devil out.  Still, they had come to flush out a witch and the witch was me.

They were thirty all together, gathered outside my gate under the two California live oaks that shade the sidewalk in
midday.  I had to squint into the still hot mid-October sun to study their unfamiliar faces.  The mob included several dwarves.  The youngest dwarf must have been in her forties, a tiny woman that for some reason wore a yellow, red and blue Snow White dress with an appliquéd picture of Snow White on the chest.  She didn’t look like a typical dwarf: no classically high forehead and her arms and legs were proportionate.  She was holding a fluffy purple teddy bear by a front paw and sucking her thumb.

In the sun my forehead sweated under the straw hat.  A mocking bird’s harsh chirrup burst from the oak on the right, piercing as a car horn. I flinched.

I don’t much like or trust people in large groups - doing time in Greenville State Prison for Women had taught me that.  In prison the exercise yard is the mostdangerous place to be: too many inmates in one area, too many chances to be
stabbed with a shiv made from a sharpened toothbrush handle or from melted and hardened Styrofoam cups.

BLURB: Andy Reed is a fast-talking, high-flying building developer and has been in love exactly one time in his life. Dr. Rosemarie Piper has not only been his best friend since childhood, she is the most highly respected upcoming conservation biologist in the northeast who can, also, hold her own in a bar fight. Rose learned her love for conservation from her mother. She learned her love for Andy through a lifetime of memories and connections. What she had never learned was she was the product of a brutal assault by a serial rapist and extortionist. Rose’s mother worked for twenty-six years to keep Rose’s identity hidden. Now, Andy vows to keep their polar differences from ripping them apart while keeping her safe and catching a killer.

Review:
Flying in the Shadows by R.T. Wolfe is the second book in the Black Creek series. This contemporary romance introduces Rose Piper a heroine as fiery as her hair. Rose Piper is unusual; she knows part of it had to do with her father, the man her mother will only refer to as a bad man. She has never met or even learned his name, and often wonders about her mother’s secretive behavior.

Rose Piper only wants two things to work with birds and to get her best friend, Andy Reed to notice her. She had a possibility of doing the first, but the second, not in her lifetime. Her best bud, Andy, likes the blond cheerleader, high maintenance type. The same type who ridicules Rose for her tomboy ways and plain appearance.

Andy Reed thought he knew what he wanted. That was until he returned home to take his cheerleader diva girlfriend to the prom. He realizes his entire family dislikes his choice of a date. He’s beginning to rethink the whole situation too, especially after he sees Rose on the arm of another guy in her prom finery.

Complications take the form of going to different schools. The biggest issue is the one Rose doesn’t know about, her father. He’s on the scene, but she doesn’t realize it, but her mother does. Her mother’s one goal is to get Rose safely to college and away from danger.

This fast, complex and suspenseful book caught my attention from the first paragraph. The chemistry between Andy and Rose worked well. I did not feel like I was reading a young adult book because the plot basically picked up when they were teens.  A few plot holes troubled me. In the beginning, Rose’s father breaks into the home and mentions two girl bedrooms indicating two sisters. We go through many stages of Rose’s life without any interaction with her sister. I thought her father was wrong until mention of the sister pops up eight years later. Then there is the fact that her stepfather is a detective, and yet he is unaware his wife is being threatened.

Flying in the Shadows is an amazing tale, which is sure to rivet all readers. It is a romance, but it is much more. It is more a story of life, and how people managed with the help of one another make it through. I highly recommend it.

Flying in Shadows/Chapter 15
excerpt

“Hot, built and sexy is here.” Grace chided as she popped a canapé in her mouth.

“I told you; he’s all yours.” Rose shrugged slightly, watching him laugh with his brother from her peripheral
vision.

“Tempting, but I have a date.” Grace gestured to the snack table as said date tipped over a bowl of dipped chocolates onto the white linen tablecloth.

Rose noticed Andy and his date as they walked toward a table holding the shrimp and sushi samples.

Grace elbowed her playfully in the ribs. “It’s the knight. Don’t kick him in the face this time. He saved the
cranes.”

“I didn’t … kick him the face.” She wasn’t sure what was more humiliating, striking out at him after she told the crowd not to touch anyone, or missing. “And if you call him that one more time, I’ll kick you in the face.”

Grace laughed and threw her head back along with the rest of her flute, then headed for her date.

Feeling petty, Rose made her way to Andy and rolled her eyes behind his back at the, of course, drop-dead gorgeous blonde that was with him. She put a hand on his shoulder to get his attention. Stupid move.

His face was tight as he turned to look at the hand on his jacket, then softened when he followed it up to lock eyes with her. They stood there for just a moment. But, it was enough. And it hurt. Damn it, Rose. Sheer determination had her primly lifting her chin before she spoke, “Hello, Duncan, Andy. I … suppose I owe you gratitude. And … an
apology.”

One of the many waiters who carried flutes of champagne ventured close to them. She rarely drank but looked longingly at the sweet, calming bubbles. Andy took two and handed one to his date.

 “Apology?”

So predictable.

Tucking some loose strands of hair behind her ear, she played along. “For, you know. The other day, or week or
whatever.”

“No. I don’t know.” He took the glass and lifted it to his lips, hiding a grin.

Taking the higher ground, she elaborated, “I apologize for misunderstanding your intentions in the purchase of the reserve and, and thank you for going out of your way to interfere, or intercede I should say.”

Andy held out his flute. She forced herself to look at him, then absently took the champagne from his hand and tilted back a long drink.

 “Anything else?” he added.

She looked at his date. Her eyes were darting between them. Rose took another drink. “And for trying to kick you in the face.”

He placed his hand on her exposed shoulder and squeezed.“Try a new move next time.” And walked away.

She sighed and closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she looked down at the empty flute in her hand. “Son of a bitch.”

CAN YOU TRUST THIS MAN?
Dahoud is a troubled hero with a dark past. As a siege commander, he once razed, raped and killed... and he enjoyed it. Now he needs to
atone.

He has sacrificed everything to build a new identity and a life of peace, and he devotes himself to protecting women from harm.

But Dahoud is not alone. Inside him lives a devious demon, a djinn that demands he subdue women with force. It torments him with pains and tempts him with forbidden desires.

When the women in Dahoud's life repay his kindness with betrayal, his hard-won control over the djinn breaks.

Would you dare an alliance with this man? Could you forgive his evil past? Could you trust him with your life,
with your freedom, with your love?

Storm Dancer is a dark-epic fantasy novel.  It deals with dark issues and may not be suitable for young readers.

 STORM DANCER
 By Rayne Hall

BLURB:
Demon-possessed siege commander, Dahoud, atones for his atrocities by hiding his identity and protecting women from war's violence -but can he shield the woman he loves from the evil inside him?

Principled weather magician, Merida, brings rain to a parched desert land. When her magical dance rouses more than storms, she needs to overcome her scruples to escape from danger.

Thrust together, Dahoud and Merida must fight for freedom and survival. But how can they trust each other, when hatred and betrayal burn in their hearts?
'
Storm Dancer' is a dark epic fantasy. British spellings. Caution: this book contains some violence and disturbing situations. Not recommended for under-16s.

 EXCERPT:

Even in the shade of the graffiti-carved olive tree, the air sang with heat. Dahoud listened to the hum of voices in the tavern garden, the murmured gossip about royals and rebels. If patrons noticed him, they would only see a young clerk sitting among the lord-satrap's followers, a harmless bureaucrat. Dahoud planned to stayharmless.

The tavern bustled with women - whiteseers hanging about in the hope of earning a copper, traders celebrating deals, bellydancers clinking finger cymbals - women who neither backed away from him nor screamed.

The youngest of the entertainers wound her way between the benches towards their table, the tassels on her slender hips bouncing, the rows of copper rings on her sash tinkling with every snaky twist. Since she seemed nervous, as if it was her first show, he sent her an encouraging smile. Ignoring him, she shimmied to Lord Govan.

The djinn slithered inside Dahoud, stirring a stream of fury, whipping his blood into a hot storm. Would she dare to disregard the Black Besieger? What lesson would he teach to punish her insolence?

Dahoud stared past her sweat-glistening torso, the urge to subdue her washing over him in a boiling wave. For three years, he had battled against the djinn's temptations. To indulge in fantasies would batter his defences and breach his
resistance. He focused on the flavours on his tongue, the tart citron juice and the sage-spiced mutton, on the tender texture of the meat.
