BLURB:
How far will collateral damage from a CIA drone strike reach?

 When a suicide bomber shatters the peace of a winter afternoon on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., former pilot and undercover Cerberus operative Nick Baron receives an eerie invitation from the chess app on his phone—a mysterious figure named The Emissary wants to play.

 Nick and his covert unit—the Triple Seven Chase team—soon find themselves drawn into battle against an unknown opponent who has resurrected an ancient order of assassins: the legendary Hashashin. And there is a long-awaited prophecy being fulfilled by a series of violent attacks which may culminate in a final apocalypse over Jerusalem.

As the Triple Seven fight to stop each attack, Nick tries to keep The Emissary on the hook by playing their digital chess game. The lines between the game and the fight begin to blur, as every time Nick loses a piece on the board, he loses one of his men. And if Nick cannot find a way to stop the terrorist mastermind, a checkmate may kill millions…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Washington, DC
 The Christmas decorations are up. That was the first thought that passed through Nick Baron’s mind as he walked beneath the grand arched entrance of Washington, DC’s Union Station. He was six feet tall and plainly dressed in a brown leather jacket and faded jeans. His wife, Katy, walked next to him, pushing a stroller. She was more elegantly dressed, still resisting the inevitable soccer mom persona. Her auburn hair fell to her shoulders beneath a stylish winter cap. She wore jeans as well, but they were midnight blue and fit her slender form snugly, descending into high-heeled riding boots. Katy was enjoying her afternoon. Nick was not.
His attention to the Christmas decorations did not spring from a yuletide appreciation for the thirty-foot tree in the main hall or the lighted garlands that adorned every horizontal surface, or amusement at the model-train displays stretching across the usually empty floor space. He took notice of the decorations because they cluttered the station, and clutter in public spaces made him uneasy.
 They paused in front of the welcome center, a two-story island of cherrywood in the center of the marble hall. While Katy checked the marquee, Nick’s steel-blue eyes roamed the crowded station. Smaller versions of the central Christmas tree created shadows in every corner and alcove. Rows of poinsettias and ten-inch riser skirts masked the empty spaces beneath the model trains. All the extra floor displays compressed the heavy holiday traffic into nicely segmented kill zones. What a nightmare.
 “You’re doing it again,” said Katy, letting out a little oomph as she thrust Luke’s stroller into motion again. “I can see it on your face, the way your eyes are moving. Relax. This is family time. You’re off duty.”
 “We could have had family time waiting in the car at the passenger pickup,” he replied, still searching rather than looking at his wife. “You know I hate train stations. They’re death traps.”
 Other terms used by Nick’s colleagues in the counterterrorism community were low-hanging fruit and easy pickin’s. In the post-9/11 world, airports had become ultrasecure, with the latest in screening technology and mountains of rules. In some countries, getting to the aircraft with so much as a toothpick was a challenge. Train stations, on the other hand, remained largely unchanged. Most didn’t even use metal detectors. Over the past thirteen years, train lines and their unions worldwide had lobbied hard to keep security lax, in hopes that a public frustrated with being poked and prodded at airports would switch to railways for their domestic travel. Their efforts succeeded in attracting a few extra passengers. They also attracted terrorists in droves.
 Since September 11, 2001, eighty-nine people had died in terror attacks against airliners, all of them in a coordinated attack on Russian commuter planes by Chechen Muslims. In the same period, nearly one thousand people had been killed and around five thousand wounded in attacks against railways. Britain, Spain, Russia, no country was immune. Maybe train bombings didn’t get the attention they deserved because the body counts weren’t high enough, but one day that would change. One day, probably in the United States, some group of radicals would find a way to use the rail system to make a big splash.
 Nick quickened his pace and steered Katy toward Platform C, where his father’s train was supposed to arrive. As they passed the midconcourse shops, he spied a rolling suitcase sitting by itself, tucked halfway behind one of the little Christmas trees. A security guard a few feet away was too busy gawking at a pair of attractive young window shoppers to notice.
 As Nick started toward the bag, a man in a business suit came out of the Starbucks and reclaimed it. He strolled away, oblivious, nursing a venti nonfat sugar bomb.
 “There he is,” said Katy, tugging Nick back the other way.
 Dr. Kurt Baron emerged from Platform C with two small suitcases. He raised one of them in a half wave.
 Thanks to strong genes, the older Baron shared Nick’s medium build and youthful features, but where Nick’s hair was thick and golden blond, his dad’s was thin and dark, turning gray. And now it seemed his father had decided to grow a goatee. It looked absurd.
 “I told him not to wear that Go Air Force sweatshirt when he travels,” he muttered to Katy. “It makes him a target.”
 “Be nice. You promised no fights.”
 “He’s only wearing it because I told him not to.”
BLURB:
A man on a mission....
Mackenzie Coalson was determined to rebuild his hometown after a devastating flood left it in ruins. He has no time for a relationship and all the romantic junk that goes with it. He has a vandal to catch and no sweet smelling bundle of femininity is going to sway him.
A woman protecting her family.....
Dixie Harris charged into the county sheriff's office with a sassy sway and a smart mouth, eager to give the sheriff, and anyone else, a piece of her mind. When she locks horns with the devil himself, in the form of Mac Coalson, she quickly learns he has a temper to rival hers, even if he's the living epitome of her sexual fantasies.
When the two unite to catch a potential murderer, it's in everyone's best interest to keep it, "business only". But that's hard to do when their combined attraction is volatile enough to burn down the town.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~Excerpt One:

Knocking again a little more forcefully, he pleaded. “Dixie baby, please open up. You didn’t see what you thought you saw. Please. Just let me explain.”

“I may be young, but I’m not stupid. And I am most certainly not blind,” she snapped at him from the other side of the door. The man was unbelievable.

“You are the most infuriating bit of baggage I have ever encountered. If I didn’t care for you so much, I’d leave right now and never look back.”

“You call that caring?! I call it a line of crap! The only thing you cared about begins with an “F” and ends with me losing my virginity!” Oh, God! Had she really just shouted that?

Pounding on the door with his fist, he shouted, “Dixie Harris, you open the door this minute, or I’ll break it down!”

“Then I’ll just have you arrested for breaking and entering. Sort of ironic, don’t you think?” she countered sweetly. She felt like crying the Mississippi River because he broke her heart, but she was not going to let that arrogant pain-in-the-ass know just how much she was hurting. She had her pride!

“Fine. Just fine. I should’ve known better than to get involved with a little girl, anyhow. Maybe, in a few years, when you grow up and if you have apologized nicely, I might just take you back! And bring a damn soapbox to stand on. My neck’s getting sore from looking down at you!” he snarled. After giving the closed-door another good pounding, he stomped out of the house, slamming the front door.

 “Oooooh!” Dixie’s eyes narrowed to mere slits and her hands balled into fists as Mac’s last remark registered with the banging of the screen door. It was like pouring gasoline on a bonfire. She was out of her bedroom and on the front porch in seconds. Heedless of the people walking down the street, she advanced like a mad woman across the yard, screaming. “Apologize to you? When pigs fly, you Mississippi River rat.

TALKING WITH AUTHOR MAGGIE ADAMS

Tell us about yourself? – Ok., well, I’m a wife, married to my high school sweetheart, Ned. I have two wonderful kids – Katie, married to Kyle, and Ross, girlfriend is Valerie. Physically, I’m short and curvy with red hair and hazel green eyes.  I used reading as an escape from a not so great childhood, and writing was a natural extension of that to me. I wrote down what I wanted my life to be like.

What was your first book? Published? That’s Whistlin’ Dixie! The first in my Tempered Steel series.

Describe your first break. I was a freelance writer for our small town newspaper in addition to working as an office manager. I took over the education line when the regular reporter had an emergency, and I hated it! I didn’t want to report the news, ferret out the story. I wanted to create the story. So I managed to get the human interest pieces or “fluff” as the rest of the reporters called it. I loved it! Real people doing interesting things. Creating something. I could relate!

What is your favorite genre to read? To write? I love to read erotic romance, especially with a bit of humor and suspense. I’ve got a few things in the works in that genre as well. My favorite writing genre is a bit more difficult. I write a bit of everything except horror.  I might try my hand at an old gumshoe mystery if the mood strikes or plan out a creative way for children to learn about space. It’s just whatever hits my crazy brain.

What makes a protagonist interesting? Flaws. I love reading and writing about flawed characters. I feel they are more believable. Everyone has flaws. How the character allows it to influence his or her life, the journey to correct or temper the flaws and even the other characteristics, which make the flaws more pronounced, can feed the emotions of the reader and bring the character to life.

What is the best being about being a writer? Getting that idea or plot or even a character just right. I sit back and say “yeah, that’s it. They’ll understand what I’m getting at.” So much of my writing is a struggle to get it “just right.” I think it’s the same for most writers.

What is the worst thing? Knowing you didn’t get it “just right” and you can’t figure out how to say it or convey it. Even worse, you can’t figure it out at all, so you just sit there and pray the words come back.

Pantser or Plotter? I’m a bit of both. I have a general plot in my head how I want a story to go, but once I start writing, the characters take over and I fly by the seat of my pants to wherever they decide to take me.

What do you see the direction of your future writing taking?

What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.

Well, as I finish up the second book in the Tempered Steel series, Leather and Lace, I find myself riding a fine line between contemporary romance and erotica, so I’m probably going to plot out a few stories I have twirling about in my head. They involve older women discovering the sensuality. One has an “encounter” while on a book tour. The other enlists the aid of a Dominant to “critique” her sexual prowess before taking a lover after her divorce.

Just for fun: Cat or dog? Dog, and a real dog, no barking ball of fluff

favorite food? A really good grilled burger

favorite book? The Flame and the Flower, Kathleen Woodiwiss. It was the first romance novel I ever read and still my favorite.

favorite movie? The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. It makes me giggle every time I watch it. Burt Reynolds is such a bad singer.

Favorite vacation destination? I love Disneyworld. It’s impossible to be unhappy there.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Hi! I'm Maggie Adams. I live near St. Louis, MO, with my high school sweetheart, Ned, and my wonderful kids, Katie (Kyle) and Ross (Valerie). My life is like a walking, talking sitcom from I Love Lucy, but I love it, although people do tend to keep their distance from me!

 Writing has always been my dream, with reading my favorite hobby. When I’m not writing, I can be found singing, dancing, and cooking, often all at the same time. I try to include a little bit of my life in everything I write, so when you read my books, keep your eyes wide open - I'm in there somewhere! Happy reading!

One treasure map; a pair of priceless emeralds; two very keen hunters — only one can win, but who says that competition can’t be a little fun?

When sweet, pretty Ariana Noonan knocks out treasure hunter Luke Donahue with a champagne bottle and steals his treasure map, he vows to get his map back, find the missing priceless emeralds…and exact a fitting revenge.

When Luke finally discovers Ariana in a dingy hotel on a remote tropical island, she’s in desperate straits and he finally gains the upper hand. Of course he will rescue her. His price? They act on the attraction that’s been simmering between them from the very beginning.

But all is not as it seems, and Luke’s sexy bargain turns up not only an unbelievable secret, but Ariana’s reasons for wanting the emerald. Suddenly, nothing is clear-cut anymore, and map or no map, Luke and Ariana are sailing into uncharted territory.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
After taking a final gulp of champagne, Ariana placed her empty glass down on a table. Staring at her prey, who was clearly unconscious of his fate, she willed her stomach to settle. The milling, elegantly dressed crowd between them became extras in a play. Time for her entrance.
Thankful she’d road-tested her six-inch silver sandals all day yesterday, she neatly avoided the chubby man in the too-tight suit who swayed toward her. Only a short distance to go. Full of outward confidence, she sashayed closer to the man she was intending to seduce, drug and steal from. Only three giggling eighteen-year-olds, gossiping in a tight cluster, stood in her way. Their formidable combined perfumes and high-pitched voices distracted her. She hesitated, staring at her feet. Her heart thumped in her chest.
Jason’s haunted face flashed into her mind. Oh heck. She took a deep breath and faced her foe.
 The old lady had left. Luke Donahue had turned his head toward her. Their eyes met. She gulped. Those stern, piercing eyes were cold chips from a glacier. Blue. Ice blue. Mr Charming had left the room, and Mr Intimidating was back.
 But, goodness gracious, said a stupid, tiny corner of her brain, isn’t he good looking?
Ariana licked her lips, then smiled a huge ‘Well Aren’t You Wonderful!’ smile, and hoped it was sexy. It was the best he was going to get.
V.K. Black is from Queensland, Australia. She loves tropical islands, snorkeling on the Barrier Reef, good wine and hot spicy food. Amazingly, all of these appear in Unexpected Places (published by Escape Publishing). Sadly, treasure maps and priceless emeralds have been in short supply in her real life, so she has written a story about them.
As well as her action/adventure contemporary, Unexpected Places, V.K. Black has written an erotic fantasy/sci fi called Heavenly Revenge (published by Secret Cravings) and a World War Two historical called Lies and Seduction (published by Cobblestone Press.) There is a unifying theme. They are all fun sexy romances, with a handsome hero and a lovely heroine.
Excerpt One:
 A SEASON OF MIRACLES:
John Oldham now sat in a straight-backed chair near the fire. She sat in the rocker opposite him and felt herself nodding until he spoke her name.
Jerking back to full alertness, she gave him a worried look. "Sir, is anything—?"
 "I didn't mean to startle you, Mrs. Ross. It's just that we need to talk about sleeping arrangements. And please, could you dispense with calling me sir?"
 "Oh, forgive me, Lieutenant Oldham. I—"
 "No, I meant you should call me John."
 "Very well, Sir – uh – John, if that is what you prefer,"
 "It is, and may I call you by your given name as well?
Caroline looked at her hands resting in her lap. She knew this would not be proper, but then having the man sleeping in her house wasn't proper either. "Yes, of course. Please do."
 "Thank you, Caroline."
 The way he said her name as he looked at her caused color to rise in her cheeks.
A Grave Inheritance
by Kari Edgren
BLURB:
Selah Kilbrid may descend from the goddess Brigid, but her heart beats—and breaks—the same as any human. Yet enduring the scorn of London's most noble lords and ladies is a small price to pay for a chance at true happiness. Selah would endure much more for love, and her betrothed, Lord Henry Fitzalan, is prepared to challenge anyone foolish enough to stand in their way—even another goddess born.
But when a captivating young gentleman draws Selah into a world shadowed by secrets, she is forced to confront her darkest fears. What if some differences are too great to overcome and a future with Henry is doomed from the start?
With these doubts threatening her impending marriage, a violent attack on an innocent child pushes Selah to the very edge of her power. She must find a way to cross into the Otherworld and regain her strength—or forfeit the streets of London to death and disease.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“It only takes a seed. With Brigid’s power, I can grow anything to maturity.” Julian pulled the stem and held the strawberry to my mouth. “Taste it, I promise you’ll not be disappointed.”

Biting down, the berry released the sweetest, most intense juice I had ever known. “It’s delicious,” I said, breathless. The berry disappeared in another bite and I was left wishing for more.

 Julian allowed his finger to linger, lightly tracing a line along the curve of my lower lip. “You see, Selah, our gifts may vary, but we are the same.” His voice had grown lower as his hand slipped down my neck to rest on the bare skin. “We are meant to be together.”

With the sweetness of strawberry still on my tongue, Julian leaned closer and touched his lips to mine. Surprised by his actions, I didn’t resist, didn’t even think to pull away.

 “I would treat you like the goddess you are,” Julian murmured, pulling me closer to fully claim my mouth.

 My thoughts became a blur. Julian was kissing me not like a brother, or even a dear friend. He was kissing my like a lover and from what I could tell, I was kissing him back. It took a moment for my senses to catch up. I love Henry…not Julian.

 “No,” I said, moving my head away despite his hold on my neck. “I can’t.”

 “Henry doesn’t deserve you.” He leaned forward to kiss me again.

 My hands shot up and pushed against his chest. “Don’t, Julian, this isn’t right. I love Henry.”

 “But he is not leath’dhia. You were never meant to be together.” Julian closed his hands around mine and held them tightly against him. “Give me time, Selah. You will learn to love me even more than you could ever love Lord Fitzalan.”

 There is a cliff-hanger that takes you directly to Book Two: Sex. Coffee. Time Travel. (Release- January 2015!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One
So this was it. Auntie Sophia's secret, mysterious farm. Aside from the buildings, it didn't look much like a farm. There were no animals in the fields. No chickens pecking about. If not for the Range Rover and the Jag, she would have thought the place was deserted. She rubbed absently at the sore spot on her forehead.
Her boots crunched on the gravel driveway echoing in the flat silence, as Lesley walked slowly past the cars and around to the back of the largest cottage. She glanced into a window to see a blonde-haired woman bent over behind a computer monitor, the screen hiding her face. Lesley could see her hands, and silently watched as she seemed to be typing hesitantly with her two manicured index fingers, closely consulting a piece of paper set to the side of the monitor. She worked slowly and with intense concentration. At one point it looked as though she had made a mistake and Lesley could hear her faintly, cursing like a sailor. Lesley was so taken by surprise by this, she hesitated a few moments before she brought her hand up to tap on the window. It was in those few seconds of hesitation that she saw the woman pull a thumb drive out of the processor, slip it, and the piece of paper, into her purse, and dash out the door. Lesley's hand dropped and she stepped away from the window.
****My Take On Lust, Mechanics & Mini Cooper****
 Romance author Lesley Meryvn has experienced a series of adventures, but never love. Destiny has a different plan for Lesley. When her aunt dies, she has to investigate a mysterious piece of land leased to the Historical Research Society. This is where she stumbles into dark and devious Miles Sherwood.
Lust, Mechanics, and Mini Cooper is a fun read with unexpected twists and odd bits of information scattered throughout the book. The best part is the chapter titles that reflects the diverse interests of the author. Two thumbs up to Ms. Brookes.
Country music star Jessie Grant has it all. An amazing voice, a string of multi-platinum albums, and a sold-out concert tour. But just before her Hearts on Fire tour rolls into Las Vegas, her lead guitarist is badly injured and is unable to play. Desperate to find a replacement before the night of a televised live show, Jessie is forced to accept help from the last person on earth she wants to see again.
Drew Carmichael has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the best up-and-coming musicians in Nashville, without cashing in on his renowned father’s name. When Jessie’s manager calls and asks him to fill in for her band’s injured guitar player, he agrees to help Jessie out even though she cut him out of her life four months ago.
In Sin City, sparks fly between Jessie and Drew, and it isn’t long before they give in to their mutual attraction. But when the dark past Jessie has successfully hidden for ten years explodes in the media, their tenuous bond is put to the test, and both Jessie and Drew must learn to trust each other if they don’t want their newfound romantic relationship to go up in flames.
Enjoy an excerpt:
Jessie Grant stared at the cheery yellow wall in her dressing room, and fought the overwhelming urge to throw something. Anything. Her agitated gaze fell on the lovely vase of flowers that had been delivered just before the show, and she had to remind herself that violence, especially towards a perfectly innocent bouquet of pink roses and white calla lilies, wouldn’t solve anything.
But then again, it might relieve the tension that was coiled inside of her like a tightly wound spring.
“Calm down.”
“Calm down?” Jessie whirled around and met the exasperated eyes of her manager. “You expect me to calm down when my guitar player, who, unbeknownst to me, was half-wasted during our set, and decided to stage dive into the audience.” She pointed a finger at him. “That broken arm of his isn’t gonna to heal in four days. I need another guitar player, and I need one now.”
“Relax,” Wally Lindell said in a soothing voice. “I’m working on it.”
“How are you working on it?”
She propped her hands on her hips and gave him her best glacial stare. It didn’t faze him. It never did. He’d been her manager since she was fifteen years old, and he knew her better than anyone. So he should have known that she would be totally freaked out about losing her lead guitar player four days before her exclusive gig in Las Vegas, after all, he was the one who had dubbed her a perfectionist.
“I put in a call to Drew.”
Jessie’s already churning stomach lurched wildly. “Drew Carmichael?”
“How many other guitar players named Drew do you know?” Wally shot her a wise-ass grin.
Only one.
“So you talked to him?” she asked, as she moved to the make-up table. She picked up the bottle of water her stylist had left out for her and took a sip. Maybe the simple task would soothe her frayed nerves.
It didn’t even come close.
“What did he say?”
“I left him a message. He hasn’t called me back yet.” Wally shoved his hands into the front pockets of his black jeans and looked her straight in the eyes with an unflinching directness.
She’d seen that look before; the one telling her that while she might be the star, he was the one who’d gotten her there, and before she went off half-cocked, she’d better let him have his say. And of course, she would. She respected Wally far too much not to listen to him.
“He’s the only guitar player we can get on such short notice that knows your set list,” he continued. “I don’t know what happened between the two of you, but whatever it is, you need to put it aside for the sake of this gig, and maybe the rest of the tour.”
“What makes you think something happened?” she asked with feigned nonchalance.
It was best not to let anyone, especially Wally, know how much she cared about Drew.
“Because you two were as thick as thieves last spring, and now it’s like he’s dropped off the face of the earth. Did you have a falling out?”
“No.” Jessie scowled, as she returned the bottle to the table. “We didn’t have a falling out. I’ve been on the road for months now and he…he’s got a life.”
A life that didn’t include her.
How I write a romance…
Ah, the writing process… the thing is, I don’t seem to really have one.  Yes, I have read many an article on the proper way to outline a book before beginning, and how to write at least 3,000 words a day, every day, but apparently, I’m just not that organized, nor do I always think in a linear fashion.  My mind, for better or worse, is usually all over the place, and so is my writing.  At least in the beginning.
In the beginning, I have a character in mind, complete with flaws and emotional baggage.  Oddly, it’s almost always the male character in the story that comes to me first.  Psychoanalyze that one- am I creating the man I’d like to be dating right then? (I mean if I were single, of course; I’m happily married!)  From there, I just start writing, and never from the beginning.  Sometimes I sketch out a few sentences about how the characters meet and their backgrounds, but I almost always dive into the middle of the story first and then work my way out to the edges, and this works for me.
The hard part is pulling it all together and making lots of separately written scenes into a seamless story.  I’ve recently started using Scrivener,  which makes it a lot easier because you can write individual scenes and then move them around on a ‘cork board’ to see what fits where, and what’ missing.  It gives you a ‘big picture’ from lots of little parts.
The most rewarding part for me is the final editing just before the manuscript is sent off.  All of those little pieces now read like a book, one that I am happy with and enjoy.  I can only hope that other people will take pleasure in reading it too.
Hello everyone!  Let me introduce myself.  Though I used to work in Boston in the biotech industry, I’m now loving life on a small farm in New England where my husband and I are raising our three children and lots of animals.  Between taking care of chickens and goats and shuttling the kids to dance class and piano lessons, I find the time to pursue my own interest: writing.  I relish creating stories and bringing my characters to life on the written page, and each book is a labor of love.
I’m passionate about the romance genre because of the emotional journey a well-written novel can take the reader on, and my goal with each of my books is to do the same for my readers.  I would love to hear from you at kellamckinnon.com, or kellamckinnon@gmail.com.
BLURB:
“I never thought it would go this far… that a man with such terrible secrets would steal my heart and make me want him so much, when his life of danger and lies should have made me want nothing more than to turn and run. I understood him, you see. I knew that beneath all of that money and power, and yes… violence, was a man in desperate need of love. So desperate that he took from me something I wasn’t ready to give: my future.”
 Brielle Dalton thought the few months in Vegas she needed to finish her dissertation would also be a chance to have some fun before ‘real life’ took over. But she never counted on meeting Cristos Vicario, the irresistible but troubled owner of the Adagio casino. The attraction was instant and all-consuming, but in the beginning neither knew that their lives had crossed before, and the result had been nothing short of tragedy. By the time Brielle discovers who Cristos really is, and what he has done in a reckless attempt to keep her, it’s too late. She’s already in too deep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Deep
I turned to Cristos and offered him a casual smile.  He was watching me, his expression unreadable at the moment, which bothered me.  I’m usually very good at reading people.  It’s second nature to me, so much so that I often don’t even know how I do it, so I felt a little bit blind when it came to this man.  And of course when people are very hard to read, they usually have something to hide.  His stoic silence was making me squirm, so I made an attempt at conversation.

“Thank you… for taking me to dinner.  Where are we going?”

  His expression relaxed into a devilish smile.  “My pleasure, Brielle.  And it’s a surprise.”

  He shifted his body a little so that the length of his thigh was pressing against mine.  A jolt of heat raced through me at the contact, but when I looked up again, he was gazing past me and out the window, so I couldn’t tell if he’d done it on purpose.  I had the sudden, disconcerting urge to crawl into his lap and rub up against him.  Just thinking about it was making my heart beat faster.

“We’re almost there”, he said.

 “Already?”

 He laughed.  “Vegas is a small city.  Were you hoping the ride would last longer?”  He pressed just a little bit closer, and I tried to scoot a bit farther away so that I didn’t suddenly lose my mind and actually crawl onto his lap.  The way my body was reacting to him, it was a distinct possibility, and I needed to be careful or I was going to end up looking like either a slut or an idiot, neither of which was flattering.

 His hand came down gently on my thigh and my breath hitched in my throat.  “Are you sure you’re not afraid of me, Cariño?”

He was looking at me with those sexy eyes again, and I felt like I could fly.  “No.  I’m not afraid of you,” I said with a little laugh.

  “Good.  If it’s not fear I’m sensing from you, then it must be desire.”  His voice was deep and just a little husky.  He was so near, so real, so hedonistically male.

 I could only stare at him for a long moment, during which Dante opened the partition to announce our arrival, breaking the spell I had apparently fallen under.  Be careful, Brie, or you’ll end up hitching a ride home with his personal assistant later.

The car pulled to a stop at the curb, and Dante came around to open the door for us.  Criss got out and then reached for my hand.  I slipped mine into his and that same thrill went through me at the contact.  His grip tightened.  I stepped out onto the curb, and was shocked to see several people with cameras raised in our direction.  Dante stepped protectively between us and the crowd, and Criss took my arm.

 “Ignore them, Brie.  Just keep walking.”

   I did, and within moments we were inside a posh looking restaurant, and being shown to our table as Dante disappeared toward the car.

 Once we were comfortably seated at an intimate corner table, I leaned closer.

  “Does that happen all the time?  The photographers?”

 He shrugged as he opened the wine list and perused the pages.  “Sometimes.  Other times I manage not to be noticed.  It just goes with the territory.”

“Oh…”

His eyes flicked up to mine.  “Don’t worry, Dante will keep them from bothering us during dinner.”

He signaled the waiter, who hurried over to our table.  “A bottle of your best red, please.  And ask the chef to prepare something special for us tonight.”

The waiter’s eyes practically sparkled as he gave a little bow and headed for the kitchen. No doubt he was anticipating a rather large tip.

Criss turned his full attention to me, leaning his elbows on the table and casually running one finger over his full bottom lip.  “Alexis tells me you’re a student in anthropology.”

His eyes, god… they burned right through me.  I had to clear my throat a little.  “Yes, I’m just finishing up my Ph.D., which of course is why I’m here in Vegas.”

“Why anthropology?  It’s kind of unusual, isn’t it?”

I smiled, my love for the subject undoubtedly shining through.  “It just comes naturally to me, I suppose.  I’ve always loved to study people, figure them out, their motives and interactions.  I sort of have a knack for understanding all that on a really basic level that most people never see.  It’s fascinating to me, always has been.”

He leaned closer and gave me a dark smile, his lips curving up dangerously.  “And are you going to figure me out, Brielle?”

“I don’t know”, I said quite honestly.  It was already obvious to me that the man ran pretty deep, and I had a very hard time reading him.  The one thing I did know for sure is that if I let him have the upper hand with me, this spark we seemed to have would go nowhere.  If I fell into the mold he made for me, I was certain he would use me up and then walk away.  He would probably do that anyway. That must be the way he had always managed to avoid relationships, because women tried so hard to become what he wanted them to be.

In Deeper

I took another deep breath.  “Whatever it is, you can tell me, Criss.”

He looked over at me, and I could see the pain and confusion in his eyes for the first time, plain as day.  It gutted me.

“No, I can’t, Brie.  It’s not just that I don’t want to.  It’s dangerous, and the less anyone but me knows, the better.  Can you understand that?”  He was watching me closely again, like he had last night, as if he was looking for even the slightest reaction.

I sat back a little, stunned, but not really surprised.  I had guessed a long time ago that he might be tangled up in some sort of questionable activities, but dangerous?  For the life of me I couldn’t imagine what he could be involved in that had him this uptight.  The mob?  A loan shark?  No, he had too much money to owe anyone anything.  Drugs?  I’d never seen him use any, or seen any signs that he ever had… and… well, I just couldn’t think of anything else.

“Okay… What do you want then?  Do you want us to be over?”  I knew I should be running in the other direction as fast as I could right now, but instead every single cell in my body was hoping he’d say no.

“No, Brie.”

Thank god.  I think.

I took a deep breath.  “Why would you think I was out to get you?  Why would I be spying on you?  I never even knew who you were until Lexi told me.”

“I just… I’ve been burned before, that’s all.  And I never saw it coming.”

“I see.”

“Look… I know it’s wrong and I know that when all is said and done you’ll probably end up hating me, but no.  I couldn’t stand for us to be over.  It would kill me.”

“Then that’s all I need to hear, for now anyway.  Just promise me that when you can tell me things, you will.”

He nodded, but his eyes shifted away from mine.  He might never tell me, but for right now, I’d take what I could get.  And what I wanted most in that moment was to hold him and touch him and breathe in the warm scent of his skin.  If it wasn’t love that I felt for this man, it was getting awfully close.  The question remained though, if I ever got to know the part of him he was hiding from me, would I feel the same?

“Take me back to your place, please, Criss.”

He looked over at me, then picked up my hand and squeezed it.  “Thank you, for understanding.  It’s more than I should ask of you.”  He gave me a sad smile and then started the car, shifting into gear and pulling away from the curb.  This time, the ride was much calmer.

We went straight up to the penthouse and he took off all of his clothes, then undressed me slowly, pausing to kiss each part of my body as he uncovered it.

All but my lips.

Excerpt:
“I haven’t scared you away from me?”

 I don’t answer him right away. Instead I put my sketch pad down, get up from the chair, and go over to where he’s lying on the couch. For a moment I stand there and then I sit down beside him, so our hips are touching.

 “You haven’t scared me away.”

 He nods slowly, meeting my gaze. I feel as if I’ve had a few drinks, though I haven’t had anything at all. It occurs to me that I’m not even sure what I’m doing sitting here. Our eyes are still lingering on each other, when he puts his hand up to my face.

“You’re so beautiful,” he murmurs, running his thumb over my chin and bottom lip. “I’ve always thought so.”

 I don’t say anything—stunned by the compliment, plus his hand is having a peculiarly strong sexual effect on me and I can barely breathe.

 “Come here.” He pulls me towards him. And I know what he wants. Our mouths meet and I can feel his breath, taste his lips, inhale his scent. I’ve never been this close to Declan before and all I can think is that it’s sublime. That’s the word that comes to mind, rolling around in my head. Sublime. Everything about him feels right to me, feels like home, and I have this spiraling sensation that I’m falling down into a place I’ve never been before, but have always wanted to go….

Excerpt
Cara—a mystery to me, at best—had just sauntered through the shutter doors. She gave Sierra and Frenchy a head nod. I guessed that was going around this season. Bold island colors were back, and so was the head nod. She walked over to the bar with a slight twitch in her hips. The guys surely liked it. I caught a few eyeing her as she walked by. I caught myself watching people at times. I was beginning to think that how people moved, rather than what they said, told you what they were really about. For a while now, I’d been finding it hard to believe what people said. My father used to say a lot of things that now didn’t mean anything. I didn’t even think he remembered. Maybe Dimitri was right. Maybe I shouldn’t remember so much. Part of why Sierra and Frenchy were my 24/7 was because they were the only two I could trust. Cara? Hmm. I didn’t have an instinct on her yet. The channel was blocked. And her walk was questionable.

 Tattoos were always of interest to me. I watched as Cara walked over to the twins. Her star tattoo on her back peaked through her shirt. “Where’s Milan?” Cara asked the twins.

 “Somewhere around here. What, you don’t want to hang out with us?” Sierra asked. Frenchy’s eyes searched Cara’s. Then she looked away.

 “Want to locate Milan? Why don’t you start with her brother over there?” Frenchy pointed to Dimitri.

Clearly, they were annoyed with her. They wouldn’t sic Dimitri on her unless they wanted to best her. Cara’s eyes lit up. I was starting to feel a little bad. Hopefully she hadn’t fallen for the earring and the smile. I thought about walking up to her, but my gut told me to hold on.

 “Brother. Try him, I might,” Cara said.

 “I thought you were the girl who had the deal on everything,” Sierra said.

 “Maybe I do. Maybe I don’t,” Cara said.

 “He’s really friendly,” Frenchy said.

 “Wow! I wasn’t thinking of that exact adjective,” Sierra said, nudging Frenchy.

 I walked slowly through the crowd. I felt a tug on my arm. I turned around. A young boy had grabbed hold of my wrist.

 “Can I buy you a coffee or something? You’re probably healthy. Too beautiful to be a coffee head. I mean … if you like coffee. Uh … it doesn’t mean you’re a coffee head,” he said.

I laughed. He was very cute—just a little young. He had light brown eyes, long, curly hair, and a nice smile. He was five-foot-10, maybe.

In my mind, there was him and there was Noel.

 “I’m Andrew. What’s your name?” he said.

 “I’m Milan,” I said.

 “What are you doing around here?” he asked.

 “First weekend out, right?”

 “Oh. I’ve been out since last week. I was here. It wasn’t as packed. You know,” he said.

 “Thanks for asking … about the coffee. I just have to get over to my girls. Maybe I’ll see you around, Andrew,” I said.

My Take on Broken

Broken by Tannille Edwards is a young adult novel that tackles issues pertinent to the teen audience including appearance, self-acceptance, love, and fitting in. Milan is a young, deaf model who graces the covers of fashion magazines and stalks the catwalks of high profile fashion shows. She’s the envy of her friends and inspire avarice in mean girl, Cara. She’s also the target of her brother’s bullying.

Author Edwards shows us even when a person seems to have it all she often doesn’t. Milan wants to be more than a world-renowned beauty, but she’s unsure how to be the person she want to be. She sees her deafness as something that separates her from the real world, fitting in, and having the love she wants.

Broken should appeal to teens with its backdrop of high fashion and lavish lifestyles. The free music downloads will be much appreciated too. As a person, who uses American Sign Language daily in school, I found the difficulties of being a deaf person in a hearing world was not covered in significant detail. On one hand, I realize those who can hear have no interest in identifying with the deaf. Too much information about being hear impaired could make it into a niche market book. Ms. Edwards avoids this by dealing more with Milan’s feelings about being deaf, which can be similar to any difference from weight to braces in an adolescent’s life.

A romance sure to appeal to teens and the young at heart.
