A Taste of Merlot

by Heather Heyford
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Raise your glass and join Heather Heyford as she pours a second serving in her series following these headstrong wine heiresses in their quest to strike out on their own…
Merlot St. Pierre is struggling to break free from her family name. Her college classmates whisper behind her back that her passion for jewelry design is little more than a hobby, since she’ll always have her father’s fortune. But Meri is determined to prove them wrong, and with the help of a handsome jewelry buyer, she just may taste her first sip of success—as long as she can hide who she really is…
 Mark Newman’s family owns a chain of high-end jewelry stores, and he’s working hard to get out from under his aunt’s thumb and prove he has a good eye and a head for business. He’s certain Meri’s designs could be the next big thing, but he’ll have to convince her that she can use her famous last name to her advantage. As their business partnership takes root, an attraction begins to flourish—but they’ll both find that love, like wine, takes time to perfect…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Mark scrutinized Merlot hard. Those ratty jeans and that bright floral halter top were right out of the seventies. Only a model-shaped body like that could make it work. Mark wondered where the tats were. Because there would be tats. It was a given.

            Unbuckling the Philippe in a move that had become routine since the annulment, he lifted his hips to access his front pocket, all the time keeping his eye on her as she walked around to the truck’s jump seat. There she pulled out a red plastic tackle box and a small artist’s portfolio.

            He let her get a head start and then followed her into the restaurant, watching the sway of her narrow hips. Just inside the entrance, he held back while she lifted the flap of the portfolio and pulled out a folder, laying it on the Formica tabletop.

            Annnnnnd—go.

            “Meri?”

            Round eyes that glittered like polished green glass in a perfectly oval face looked up into his. She was clearly nervous.

            Then she smiled.

            And gorgeous.

            Oh, no. Oh, shit. Criminally talented and a babe. He was nowhere near ready for that. He’d vowed to steer clear of pretty women—relationships, anyway—for one solid year, to focus on the business. He still had four months to go.

            Worse, he could tell from the truck and her clothes that she wasn’t high on the income ladder, either. And he was definitely not getting taken by another bloodsucker, no matter how beautiful.

            “I’m Mark.”

            With her right hand she reached out to meet his, while her left bumped her folder. It slid to the edge of the table, transparent sheets of vellum slipping out, drifting about his feet like pale leaves onto the crumby linoleum.

            “Oops!” She immediately lowered herself to the floor to retrieve them. Mark bent to help her. Their heads were inches apart as they squatted, reaching in all directions for what were clearly painstakingly drawn renderings. He took advantage of their close proximity to watch her as her eyes dipped to the floor, thick tawny lashes brushing lightly freckled cheekbones. When she blew some dirt off one of her designs, he caught a faint whiff of peppermint.

            They rose as one and she reorganized the papers, her stack of bracelets tinkling with her movements.

            Without thinking, he reached for her wrist and raised it to inspect the layers of silver, rose and yellow gold running halfway up to her elbow. She stood rooted to the spot, allowing him to turn her pliant limb over, exposing the paler, inner epidermis and the faint blue veins traveling up through skeins of precious metals. When he found the one he was seeking he ran a finger across its clasp.

            “Beautiful,” he breathed, barely glancing at the bracelet.

            “Is this what you’ve been looking for?”

            His eyes moved from her wrist up her arm and her swanlike neck to her heart-wrenchingly naive expression. No way could he ever take advantage of that face, even if he were the type of cutthroat buyer who operated that way.

            “This is it.” At long last, his finger was on the Purchase Prize—his quest for the past three months—only to discover that the jewelry was eclipsed by its maker.

            “I made all of these too.” She slipped three or four off. “Here’s how you can tell. See? I burnish set one-point-five-millimeter, diamond-cut peridots on the inside of every piece.”

            There was a belief system that held that all gemstones had unique qualities that were transferred to the wearer. But for them to work their magic, the stones had to be touching the skin, where they were hidden from public view. A secret indulgence, known only to the wearer.

            “Why peridot—other than the fact that they match your eyes?”

            She lowered her lids briefly, giving him another glance at her sweep of lashes. When she looked up again, her expanded pupils all but obscured her irises and her cheeks glowed a soft, contrasting cherry.

            “Peridot clears the heart. Helps connect us to our destinies and to an understanding of the purpose of existence. It’s also said to attract love.”

            Their eyes locked together, he gently lowered her arm. They were still standing in the aisle next to their booth. The other diners were beginning to stare.

            Mark tilted his head toward hers and whispered, “I think we’re causing a ruckus.” He motioned toward her side of the table, and they slid into the vinyl booth, facing each other.

            They each picked up a greasy, plastic-coated menu. “How did you find out about my work?” Meri asked.

            From staring at the bracelet photo for the last three months, he already knew Meri Peterson, in an abstract way. He had to keep reminding himself that prior to yesterday, he hadn’t existed for her.

             “I went to your college’s student show last spring.”

            While the waitress got them coffee, he went through the chain of events leading up to his phone call—leaving out the part about the witchy woman down the hall at the co-op.

            “So, you originally from the city, or here in Vallejo?” Casual as he tried to appear on the outside, inside he was dying to know everything about her, from the size of those sexy jeans she wore to the brand of that minty toothpaste on her breath.

            It was a simple, run-of-the-mill question. So why’d she seem caught off-guard? Her arms went straight as she clutched the sides of her vinyl seat.

            “Um, I went to high school back east. Now I live a little north of here.”

            The woman was a basket of nerves. Talented as she was, she obviously didn’t have any experience with selling her work. He had to think of a way to make her relax.

The Anonymous Girl

by Holy Ghost Writer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
"Action against corrupt authorities mixed with master plans concocted from prison build the suspense of this young woman's story.
"A precocious young woman uses prison computers to plot her future in the bundled edition of That Girl Started Her Own Country and its direct sequel, The Anonymous Girl. These two episodes of this series build mounting suspense about the mysterious heroine's family lineage and future plans.
"To hide her identity, the titular girl uses aliases, such as Pippi Longstocking and Ester Bilderberg, but she calls herself Zaydee among friends. A reactionary moment with an FBI agent lands her in the Federal Detention Center in Miami. There, a sympathetic prison guard facilitates Zaydee's occasional time away, where she awaits trial for charges she insists are spurious. On these sojourns, she orchestrates revenge on the two FBI agents responsible for her incarceration and pursues romantic interests. While in prison, she sets in motion a master plan to establish her own country, using her computer skills to hack websites. Zaydee believes she possesses the resources to populate her private domain solely with exceptional people like herself.
 "Zaydee's mysterious identity is compounded by the parallel story of her twin sister, Lizee, who experienced a less nurturing childhood. Liz goes to London to visit her lover, Lars, a computer expert sequestered in the office of a hacking group. Unaware the two women are actually different people, Lars mistakes look-alike Liz for Zaydee, who he claims to truly love. Hearing a menacing noise at the office door, he tells Liz where to hide and gives her a box of letters intended for Zaydee. This chapter ends in heightened suspense: 'Slipping through the small opening [within a wardrobe], she let the door close behind her, sealing herself into the safe room.'
"As the principal protagonist, Zaydee's enigmatic personality unfolds through her internal thoughts as she plans her future and charms cohorts into helping her. Action scenes and rich narrative description move the plot forward at a quick pace. She seeks revenge against corrupt authorities while befriending the people she considers worthy of her friendship. Her goal of living entirely on her own terms and manipulating those who will share her idealized country seems less than altruistic.
"The author introduces real people of public note as incidental characters. Alan Dershowitz serves as Zaydee's legal adviser while she's in prison. Nancy Grace is warned to 'tread lightly' and stop digging into Zaydee's fruitful efforts to undermine her antagonists. William Barrett of Forbes arranges for a private meeting with Zaydee at the prison to reveal important family connections.
"The self-assured writing style renders Zaydee's ideas and interactions with others believable, despite her larger-than-life attributes. .... A short excerpt from the projected sequel completes this combined volume of That Girl Started Her Own Country and The Anonymous Girl.
"This book's author adds mystery to the series by remaining anonymous. Those who like fantasies set in the present day, depicting exaggerated lifestyles and cyberspace intrigue, will be entertained." Margaret Cullison, Foreword Clarion
Excerpt One:
The imprisoned “princess” could hardly wait to get back into the computer room and start the process. This was one of her best scams yet. Going through her regular routine of sign-ins and secure servers, she finally got to Agent Whitehead’s account. Trying to be quick, but careful as always, she searched for the account information she needed. Someone pulled a chair up next to her, giving her a small jump.
“So what are we doing?” Maria asked as she rubbed her hands together.
Zaydee punched her lightly in the arm.  “You snuck up on me. Haven’t you heard I know dangerous Kung Fu moves? It’s not safe to scare me!”
“Well, maybe if you weren’t so serious, it wouldn’t be so easy to surprise you! So what can I do? This sounds like something big. Give me somethin’!”
“All right, just take the computer next to me and tell me when you’re into a secure server.”
 Maria’s long, thin fingers moved quickly over the computer. Zaydee imagined that at one time Maria had been a stocky, sturdy character. Traces of her muscles remained, but Maria knew she was in for the long haul at FDC, and didn’t much care about her dwindling figure.
“Ready. What’s up next?”
 Zaydee gave her the bank login information from the Bahamas account and the name of Agent Binder to get into his account at the same time. “Just get the account info and have it ready. We’re going to do a large transfer.”
The big break Trudy Hollander’s small accounting firm needs has finally arrived, but unfortunately it comes with murder, mayhem and Kristof Farkas, a man she just can’t seem to resist. Even worse, Kristof is the CFO of Dark Wolf Enterprises—the one person who can pull the plug on the job that will take her company to the next level.
And then there are the assassins who can jump from three stories up and still be able to run away…
Kristof has no intention of giving in to his inner wolf and claiming Trudy. She’s human. Too fragile to withstand being a shifter’s mate. But the need to protect her is stronger than his resolve, and his desire is more powerful yet. He’ll fight with everything he has to keep her safe, both from those who would hurt her, and from himself.
Enjoy an excerpt:
Kristof leaned back against the car as the police vehicles came to a screeching halt not too far from him. Two officers jumped from the vehicle with guns drawn and trained on him and Lajos.
“Don’t make a move! Put your hands up where I can see them!”
“Aw, this is just great,” Lajos said.
Kristof put his hands up and clasped them behind his head. “Do as the nice humans have asked,” he whispered.
“Are you the punks that broke into the house?” one of the officers asked, as he looked down the barrel of the gun.
“No officer. My brother and I have an appointment with Gertrude Hollander. When we arrived we noticed her kitchen window had been broken. We looked through the window and saw some men trying to break down one of the doors inside.” Kristof tilted his head toward Lajos. “This is my brother Lajos. He broke the front door down to try to capture them while I went to the back to head them off.”
“Uh huh, so where did these other men go?”
“They got away sir.”
“Sure they did,” the officer said, not too convinced.
Kristof resisted the urge to glare at the human. “We just flew in from Michigan. I have my wallet in my pocket. If you’ll allow me, I’ll retrieve it for you.”
“Sure, and while you’re getting your wallet you can also get out your gun.” Both officers laughed. “Keep your hands up. My partner will get your wallets. One move and I’ll make your night.”
At that, Kristof did glare. But he stood still as he was patted down and his wallet removed. After the officer finished with Lajos, with wallets in hand, he went back to his partner. “Their ID says who they say they are.”
His gaze flickered to two women, one holding a dog, the other in curlers, and a man walking toward them. Although the dog no longer barked, he recognized them both instantly. The wolf in him stirred.
She drew closer and stood behind the officers. He didn’t have enough time to appreciate her before, but now there was no mistaking. Gertrude Hollander was beautiful. She was taller than most human females and had a shape he could appreciate. She didn’t look like one of those starving female models that human men seemed to fawn over. No, she had curves—nice curves.
“Ma’am, are you the one who called the police?” The police officer asked.
“Yes, Officer.”
“Are those the men who tried to attack you?”
When her gaze rested on him, he saw that her eyes were the prettiest green he’d even seen. Then she looked to Lajos and then back to him. “N-no.”
“Take a good look. Are you sure?”
“I’m sure. The other guys were the same ones that broke into my business yesterday. They were paler than these two, bigger and had on all black. Their hair was longer too.”
“These two say they had an appointment with you, is this true?”
Her eyes instantly brightened. “Oh my God!”
She rushed forward and his wolf sniffed the air that she stirred. His wolf pushed forward. Kristof closed his eyes to control the shift. Not now.
Up the Tower Author Interview & Giveaway
Tell us about yourself:
I am from Texas originally. I live now in St. Louis with my wife, dog, and cat in the upstairs apartment of a duplex. I've taught writing for many years, and I also run a blog at jplantern.com where I review movies and books and talk about politics.
What was your first book?
My first book that is for sale is IN THIS RED COUNTRY. It's a novella about a man and a woman living on a frontier-like Mars who have to get the woman an abortion to save her life. To do this, they have to use the woman's old lover, a native Martian, as a tracker, and things start to get disastrous.
My first actual book that will never be published was a thing called ACROSS CREATION, and it was about a young man who traveled across hell, purgatory, and heaven to find a delinquent God. It was very bad.
Describe your first break.
I'll tell you when I get one!
What is your favorite genre to read? To write?
They're one and the same: science fiction. I'm a big fan of those irreducible elements of unreality.
What makes a protagonist interesting?
He or she has got to be good at something. You can make someone as unlikeable as you possibly can, or as likeable as you possibly can, but unless they're good at something, nobody will care. And typically, the more interesting the thing they're good at, the more interesting the character. People tend to love reading and watching process—this is why in movies, for instance, why montages are often so fondly remembered in sports movies.
Anyway, protagonists have to take action, and lots of it. That's why we like them.
What is the best thing about being a writer?
The best thing about being a writer is just the process itself. Being able to get lost for a bit when you're putting words together, and knowing intuitively what will sound best or work best (even though, really, your intuition is often wrong). That's the best thing.
What is the worst thing?
The uncertainty. There's a lot of nebulousness about whether what you're doing is right, or whether it'll sell next month, or whether you have an audience, or what else you can be doing to make sure you're selling copies. You can second-guess yourself to death in this business.
Pantser or plotter?
I'm a little of both. It's a weird term. I don't know that I ever heard of it before reading writer interviews. I think everyone does both. Breaking down the writing process by how the plot is structured isn't really something I do very often.
What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.
I'm not too entirely sure. I think I might be doing something with robots, something with alien planets. I'd love to give you more, but that's about all I've got right now!
Cat or dog person?
I love both! I had a dog before meeting my wife, and then I bought my wife a cat for Christmas last year. Since then, we've realized that the anxious, incredibly affectionate dog is much more like my wife, and the moody, picky, coy cat is much more like me.
Favorite food?
My favorite food that makes me feel like a decent person is probably like, banana-egg pancakes. My favorite food for when life is stressful is probably just pizza. I'm a simple man.
Favorite book?
Oh god, who can say? Probably something by Gene Wolfe. I don't know if I really categorize books in terms of favorites that often.
Favorite movie?
My stock answer used to be The Thing, but lately its been Alien. Maybe Blade Runner. Clearly, some kind of science fiction from the seventies or eighties, though.
Favorite vacation destination (you just have to want to go there)
London! My wife and I really want to go, and have never been. We're both huge history buffs.
Up the Tower
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Disaster brings everybody together. A cloned corporate assassin; a boy genius and his new robot; a tech-modified gangster with nothing to lose; a beautiful, damaged woman and her unbalanced stalker—these folks couldn't be more different, but somehow they must work together to save their own skin. Stranded in the epicenter of a monumental earthquake in the dystopian slum, Junktown, there is only one way to survive. These unlikely teammates must go...UP THE TOWER.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Before anything else—before the riot, before the flood, before the gap and the deaths and the fires and the pain—before all of that, Ana just wanted to get the hell out of Junktown.
But she was stuck there with Raj, and Raj had all the bodyguards, so she couldn't very well leave on her own. Walk into Junktown without any protection? No, thank you. She had a knife on her, but that was hardly enough. The knife fit neatly in a small, luxury Cardion-brand sheath at her side.
 The rest of her outfit was direct out from a fashion magazine. She wore tight black Cardion slacks, her patent leather Aushwere ankle boots sexy and stylish and perfect for inner-city walking. Her dark blue blouse was Cardion again (there had been a sale); already she had noticed the way Raj had been hugging his eyes to how it cupped and clung to her body. He would have been looking a bit more, perhaps, but she wore her favorite Kadaya Sarin-brand leather jacket, allowing her a bit of modesty with the long sleeves and tight collar, despite the thinness of the material. She was a woman dressed to impress, but also was no whore—she had her man. He liked her dressed attractive, but not like some slut. Ana knew what he wanted, because that was her entire life, as she saw it, from now on.
 They were inside the ground floor of a tall building. Cleanbots rushed around them, sweeping up dust, guided along by retrofitted eyebots that spied out areas of dust and disrepair.
 “Here's where we'll have the lobby,” said Raj, opening his hands out wide to the open space.
 Ana had presence of mind to hold her tongue.
 What she wanted to say was, “Really, dear? Here in the first possible place that someone could enter from the street? That's where you'll have the lobby? That's so inventive. You're so smart.”
 What did she say was, “Oh! It will look beautiful, I'm sure.”
J.P. Lantern lives in the Midwestern US, though his heart and probably some essential parts of his liver and pancreas and whatnot live metaphorically in Texas. He writes speculative science fiction short stories, novellas, and novels which he has deemed "rugged," though he would also be fine with "roughhewn" because that is a terrific and wonderfully apt word.
Full of adventure and discovery, these stories examine complex people in situations fraught with conflict as they search for truth in increasingly violent and complicated worlds.
BLURB:
In a world where cities float, airships sail the skies and mythical creatures are summoned in a pinch, Celes Vale is distinctly average. Living in the shadow of his talented cousin and his powerful aunt and uncle, Celes is resigned to a future of soot, factories and well, more soot.
But on the night of his twelfth birthday everything changes. A blinding light, a whispered voice and in an instant Celes becomes the first ordinary child in history to develop magic, sending him on a fast-track ticket to the greatest of the floating cities, Gardarel. Boasting grand, elegant buildings wrought from shimmering white stone, the entire city appears as though it has been built from light, and so it has come to be called the Kingdom Lights.
Though some welcome Celes, others want the dirt-ridden up-start off their city preferably head first. Nowhere is this clearer than in the attitude and actions of the beautiful and haughty Lady Ban and her sneering nephew, Marcus Blackwood. But Blackwood, with his gang of goons and unimaginative one-liners, is soon the least of Celes s problems.
With a little magic and a lot of detective work, Celes and his group of Scurriers and Wisps unravel the dark truth behind Lady Ban s prim, perfect smile an alliance to the villainous Wardens and the masked man who leads them. However, in his attempt to expose Lady Ban, Celes unwittingly stumbles onto an even darker conspiracy a plan that could lead to the complete destruction of Gardarel itself.
 EXCERPT
With his immaculately polished shoes, carefully preened suit and even more carefully preened moustache Jaime Milton was the last person one would expect in the sooty factory city of Midgard. His father, Lord Milton, Sr., a great wobbly man with fat flapping fingers like purple bananas was a close second.
 It was a brilliant June morning and the city of Floating City of Midgard was alight with life. Jaime walked through the weathered cobblestone streets and watched as houses flung their windows and doors open, lapping in the sunlight. Jaime had not been here for two years and yet the City of Factories was exactly as he had remembered; there were rows of homes huddled together, tightly packed into the little street as high rising billows of smoke sailed into the sky. The cobblestones of rose-tinged granite underfoot were boisterous and uneven and Jaime had to be extra careful so as not to fall over as racing children zoomed past, chasing one another furiously through the street. Some were covered in soot whilst others were rosy clean but, he noted, all were breathless.
 Jaime Milton couldn’t help but smile.
 “What are you smirking about?” barked Lord Milton, Sr. as his son pushed him through the streets in a beautiful silvery wheelchair.
 “Just thinking about the first time I came to Midgard,” replied Jaime. “It was a…”
“I didn’t ask!” announced Lord Milton, Sr., brandishing his polished walking cane. “Always answering questions I didn’t ask! And stop your smiling! There’s no reason to smile!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Zane jumped before the caravan.

A collective rush of gasps, like a gust of wind, sounded from the crowds as the giant procession came to a screeching halt. Zane could only hear the pounding of his heart in his ears, but beneath that, he sensed the silence.

The musicians had halted their playing, the dancers no longer danced, and the crowds watched in frozen horror.

He stood like a statue—head high and hand far from his blade.

 Before him was the largest, most opulent lecarta he’d ever seen. In shape it was little more than a box on poles, but its sides were inlaid with thick gold while silver curled from its four corners like thorns. Anything that wasn’t covered in gold was draped in dark red cloth, the foreboding color of the Citadel. The cloth was a thick, rich weave, which made his own clothes feel like rags hanging from his frame.

 Carrying the lecarta were nine shirtless, heavily muscled men who wore baggy red pants—their dark skin was oiled and glistened in 12 the light of the burning midday sun. Zane was no slouch, but each man’s arm was the size of his thigh. But that was not his fear... Closer still, were two men wearing nondescript clothes of brown and tan to blend in with their surroundings. Unlike normal guards, they needed no armor. Upon their backs were cloaks depicting two crossed swords.

The cloak of a Devari…

****Citadel of Fire Review**** 4/5

Citadel of Fire is the second book in the fantasy series, The Ronin Saga. First, the Ronin are mythical warriors that may or may not existed, but rumors swirl that they may return. Not everyone is overjoyed about such a possibility.  In fact, the warring kingdoms are anxious to establish their grasp before it happens.

The central character, Gray, is representative of the central theme, discovery, and its sister theme, potential. Gray’s not sure who he is. He was once another person, possibly a murderer, but he has no memory of this. His internal conflict is knitting the two sides together. Then there is the issue he may be a Ronin too.

Gray isn’t the only one on a voyage of discovery and realizing potential. Ayva is also on the brink of growing beyond her prescribed limits. Not too surprising that their paths intertwine.

Citadel of Fire is a richly detailed novel that transports the reader to the middle of the conflict. Gray’s uncertainty about who he is makes him more interesting than the average hero.  The variety of places, races, beings and animals is extensive. I’d suggest reading the first book, The Knife’s Edge, first. That way the reader will be familiar with the terms and the setup of the novel.

Tired of rereading The Fellowship of the Rings, then, maybe The Ronin Saga is your next series.

THE EDITOR IS ALWAYS RIGHT

Marchand sat down and stared dumbly at his computer screen, not knowing where to begin. He had tried creating outlines and character profiles, but no ideas surfaced. He took his hands and buried his face in them. They moved up to his forehead and slowly began a descent over the mounds of his closed, bulging eyelids, then over his bulbous nose and rough, reddened cheeks. He shifted his oversize torso in the direction of a buzzing noise; his body felt heavy, leaden with humidity and the salty crust of baked-on sweat. With uncharacteristic speed and violence he smashed a fly with his flyswatter, then turned his attention back to the screen.

He made a few tentative stabs at the keyboard, trying to grease the wheels. Nothing. Then he noticed the smell again, the same stench from yesterday that hovered somewhere between sweet and putrid. It irritated him not knowing what it was. The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. Marchand got up and crisscrossed the room several times, sniffing the air, trying to home in on a location. The dusty books were possibilities; he walked slowly past them, examining the gold-striped and leather bound volumes the same suspicious way a Nazi commandant would inspect prisoners-of-war. Some of the books were very old, with yellowed pages and stitched bindings that disintegrated when handled. They were musty with age and produced a very intense odor, to be sure, but that wasn’t it. He stood over a bologna sandwich, considered it, but rejected that as the source of the smell.

When an arrogant Marquis’s seduction fails, he plans a Xmas celebration at his country estate. Inviting the one girl who not only rejects him but seems to hate him is part of his plan to win her. His scheming soon turns to much more than decorating the house for Xmas. Abigail’s beauty incites a plan for revenge on the Marquis by his most depraved enemy, who is bent on kidnapping and raping Abigail. Can the Marquis save her and make this a merry Christmas after all?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Abigail called after them. “Galoshes are by the back door. Gloves and scarves also. You don’t want to wear your best clothes on an expedition like this, gentlemen”

She leaned back in her chair and watched them go. Startled, but pleased, she hurried to her own rooms to change into riding clothes and tall boots. She adored tramping in the woods and how could she not join in the search for the perfect Yule log? After scarcely a thought she pulled on the breeches she wore when she was riding at home with no one caring what she did. She pulled on her riding boots, although she picked her second-best pair. Who knew what such wonderful snow would do to good boots?

She ran lightly down the steps to the back door. A small screech escaped her when the felt herself hauled against a strong chest, and looked up in astonishment at a livid Jason glaring down at her. Maybe not Jason, right now. No, definitely the Marquis. An irate Marquis, giving her a good swat on her rear and glaring at her.

“Don’t you even think of trying to escape me, you little fool. You’re not at your country home. You’re at mine, with some of the most licentious noblemen in London who’d be delighted to see you so scantily clothed. Do you want them to line up at your door tonight, you vexatious idiot?”

Abigail simply stared at him for a moment, her temper ready to boil over, when he suddenly softened, ran his hands over her hips and around her waist and pulled her against him. His kiss was hot and blazing, lingering at her lips with his tongue pushing into her mouth in a dizzying display of passion that had her clinging to his coat lapels.

“My god, Abigail, how am I going to stay away from you?”

He lay his forehead softly against her hair and softly caressed her well rounded bottom.

Stunned, she couldn’t think of a thing to say. She wrenched herself away and fled back to her room. She’d simply not thought of anything but her own comfort and that wonderful snow. Of course a woman didn’t appear in breeches at a house party for London aristocrats! Not unless there was a hunt scheduled or good riding was available.

She was an idiot.

How could she face Jason, and indeed her grandmother? And she herself was supposed to be chaperoning Bettina?

Burying her face in her hands, she tried to shut out her regretful thoughts. The fact that her every thought centered on Jason and his reactions didn’t even occur to her.

She didn’t see the lascivious face of Lord Wilcombe, earl of Wilmington, watching them from a corner of the hallway.

About the Author:
Jean feels she’s very much a Californian although she was born in Ohio. California has been home for a good many years. Life changed drastically for her when she was six and her father died incredibly from an errant golf ball. A dishonest insurance agent forced her sheltered mother to seek work, and she became a teacher. Her hours required Jean to be alone in the house in the afternoon, and since she was forbidden to leave till her mother got home, she became an avid reader. The local library supplied most of the books and she developed early her two of main interests, Jane Austen and King Arthur.

Reading is still one of her favorite activities, although she sometimes has to push it aside to make room for her enduring love of writing. Her journalism degree was used infrequently until recently. Marriage and raising two children pleasantly got in the way. After twenty years of being a real estate broker and with the kids raised she finally could devote her time to writing, her first love.

Jean's enchantment with the lore and legends of Druids and, therefore, delving into their history led to fascinating research that inspired her popular Garland of Druids Series for Cerridwen Press. She's now enjoying writing stories filled with magic and romance for her Songs of the Mages Series, also for Cerridwen Press.She has recently left Cerridwen and Ellora's Cafe Press and is now writing exclusively for MuseItUp, the largest Canadian publisher.

Few things in her life have been so satisfying, especially when all her books have a happy ending. Wonderful to make happen. It only gets more interesting when a secondary character demands his very own book. Who would want to deny him? Not Jean!

BLURB:
Three novellas and an unforgettable short story, now available together in one festive package!

 A Cowboy For Christmas by Katherine Garbera
Annie Prudhomme never expected to be back in Marietta, MT and her family is fond of reminding her that she left them and the town behind in search of better things. A humiliating divorce that cost her everything she’d gained has driven her back home and her family isn’t about to welcome her back into the fold. She’s in town to rebuild the old home that she inherited and to move on once again.

Carson Scott never forgot Annie or the way she left. Now that she’s back in town he’s realizing that the old flame still burns hot but he can’t risk his heart the way he did last time now that he has his son to think about it. Being trapped together during a December snowstorm gives them a chance to rekindle their romance but is Annie back for good or is she just looking for a cowboy for Christmas?

Christmas At Copper Mountain by Jane Porter

Since the loss of her family in a plane crash, Harley Diekerhoff has led a quiet life and keeps to herself. Taking the temporary job at the Copper Mountain Ranch as widower Brock Sheenan’s housekeeper seems perfect for her. But her calm cocoon is invaded with the arrival of Brock’s pre-teen twins, Mack and Molly who’ve never experienced a proper Christmas and before she knows it, Harley’s determined to make their holiday perfect.

 Annoyed at first by Harley’s interference, Brock is secretly pleased she’s changed Mack and Molly’s world. It doesn’t hurt that he finds Harley incredibly attractive, fierce, smart and passionate. It’s also an added bonus that she’s not afraid to challenge him and get his blood heated! But when sparks fly and the attractions sizzles between them, Harley’s not so sure she can handle something permanent with this dark, taciturn cowboy who doesn’t know how to let her in. But Brock is determined to hold on to her and praying for a Christmas miracle…

 Home For Christmas by Melissa McClone

Ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon.

Rachel Murphy loves the scent of gingerbread baking almost as much as she enjoys creating custom edible houses at Christmastime. But she needs a bigger kitchen if she wants to make the most of her impromptu holiday business.

 Enter Nate Vaughn, handsome venture capitalist turned Montana dude ranch owner and her brother’s boss. Nate’s commercial kitchen is perfect for the baker. And he thinks she might be perfect for him…as a business partner.

 After being burned by a celebrity baker, Rachel’s wary of Nate’s interest in her gingerbread houses, not to mention his mistletoe kisses. She should leave the Bar V5 ranch and return to Arizona. Or can Nate convince her she’s already home?

 Mistletoe Magic by Melissa McClone

Spending a quiet Christmas housesitting and reading novels about hot cowboys sounds perfect to Caitlin. Until a stray kitten brings her face-to-face with Noah, her crush from college. Watching the handsome vet in action melts Caitlin's heart and brings back long-forgotten emotion. She would be safer back at the house lost in the pages of a book. But a toe-curling mistletoe kiss tempts her to stay. Maybe she won't be spending this Christmas… alone.

 Veterinarian Noah Sullivan isn't a Scrooge, but the Christmas Eve tradition of hanging mistletoe in the clinic's waiting room annoys him. Kissing doesn't belong at the Copper Mountain Animal Hospital. Noah rethinks his position when Caitlin Butler arrives with a stray kitten she found freezing in the snow. All he wants now is to maneuver the pretty preschool teacher under the mistletoe. If he's not careful, he'll wind up on Santa's naughty list.

Excerpt from A Cowboy For Christmas:

Marietta, Montana did Christmas in a big way with all the storefronts on Main Street draped in garland and twinkle lights.  The Main Street Diner wasn’t any different with its rustic wreath made with layers of old ropes and decked with red poinsettia leaves and Rocking Around the Christmas Tree playing merrily on the jukebox as Carson Scott opened the door.

No one was exactly sure how the Wednesday night tradition had started, not even Carson, but he knew that his brothers had done it for him.  It had been in the dark time right after Rainey had been killed in a head-on collision out on highway 89 on her way back from Livingston.  He’d sat at home every night with baby Evan drinking too much Red Bull.  His oldest brother Alec had insisted that they all meet in Marietta at the diner for dinner.

Alec had thick blond hair like their momma and piercing blue-gray eyes that Carson had heard more than one girl describe as colder than the glaciers in Glacier Park.  But Sienna, Alec’s wife, had said that she knew how to warm him up.  Which had led to a lot of ribbing by Carson and his other brothers.  Alec needed to be taken down a peg or two at times.

But not on Wednesday nights.  Carson showed up here after he dropped Evan off at his maternal grandparents’ house and ate chili and cornbread with his brothers.  There were five of them all together and sometimes Flo, who ran the grill, gave them a hard time about being carbon copies of their dad, but that didn’t bother any of them.  Their old man cast a long shadow and had a reputation for being honest and hard-working.  There were worse things a man could be known for.

There were only five weeks left until Christmas and Evan was being cagey about what he wanted from Santa this year.  He’d hinted he wanted a mommy that wasn’t in heaven.  And the last thing that Carson was interested in was dating any woman, much less one to become Evan’s new mommy.

 “Isn't that Annie waiting tables?” Alec said as they entered the diner.  The walls were heavy red brick and the floor solid wood.  There was a counter with red leather-covered stools bolted to the floor in front of it, and for as long as Carson could remember beehive-haired Flo was standing at the grill cooking delicious food, trading gossip, and flirting with any man who entered.

“Annie who?” he asked.  He was holding the door open for his younger brother Hudson who had a shopping bag from The Mercantile in one hand and his Stetson in the other.

 “Prudhomme.  Is there another Annie you’d care about?” Alec asked.

“I thought she'd left town for good,” Hudson said.

 Annie.  Here.  Wow.

 Why?

How?

 When?

 It didn’t make sense.  He ate here every Wednesday with his brothers.  She hadn’t been here last week.  Why was she here now?

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly drawn winner will receive a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Forensic accountant Maggie Martin survives the sudden death of her husband, the charismatic President of Windsor College, only to uncover the secrets of his carefully-concealed double life. Dealing with the financial and emotional wreckage left in Paul’s wake, she is stunned to learn he inherited an estate known as Rosemont in the seemingly-serene Midwestern town of Westbury. Why had he never told her?

Maggie travels to Westbury for the stated purpose of listing Rosemont for immediate sale, but what she really seeks are answers to her all-consuming questions about her sham of a marriage; her sham of a life. She never anticipated the seductive charm of Rosemont. Throwing her trademark caution to the wind, and over the objections of her opinionated grown children, she pulls up stakes and moves halfway across the country, determined to make a fresh start in Westbury. Behind closed doors, however, lurks a cadre of evildoers, playing with multiple wild cards of fraud, embezzlement and arson.

With a quiet, orderly – and distinctively solitary – life in mind, Maggie is instead thrown headlong into a crusade against political corruption, where defeat and retreat are not an option. Still bearing the scars of betrayal, will she find joy, romance and possibility in Westbury?

This fast-paced, smart novel has enough twists and turns to make the reader want to buckle in!

Enjoy an excerpt:

Maggie dropped to her knees and threw her arms around the squirming dog. “You don’t know how much I appreciate being able to have Eve with me tonight,” she beamed up at John. “My flight was delayed and I had a Chatty-Cathy car rental agent. I drove like a maniac to get here. I’m really very grateful you waited. The lot was empty and I thought that I was too late.”

“It was no trouble. I was catching up on paperwork,” John assured her. “I live on the other side of the Square and walk to work, weather permitting. I usually stop at one of the restaurants on the way home for dinner.”

“Are you done? Would you like a lift home?”

John knew an opportunity when he saw one. “I just need to lock up,” he said. “Are you hungry? Or are you full of delicious airline food,” he mocked. When she shook her head and indicated that she was, indeed, starved, he proposed that the three of them walk over to Pete’s for dinner. They could leave her car at the Hospital and she could drop him off at his house after dinner.
