BLURB:

A fantasy reimagining of the American Civil War that pits muskets against magic, massive war machines against mind readers, and glass sabers against soldiers in psychic exoskeletons.

In exile since the civil war, former spy and turncoat Marta Childress wants to quietly live out her remaining days in the West. But then her manipulative brother arrives with one final mission: Transport the daughter of a hated inventor deep into the East. Forced to decide between safely delivering the girl and assassinating the inventor, Marta is torn between ensuring peace or sparking a second civil war.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
To her surprise Carmichael blinked uncomprehendingly at the name. It had been rattling around Marta’s head like a Breath in a bottle for the last three months, but to him it seemed meaningless. Then the corners of his mouth curled up, Carmichael finally remembering.
“This is about our older sister? I forgot about her entirely.”
His dismissal of her months of misery infuriated Marta all the more, the girl fighting harder against his grip. Her helplessness stoked her anger further, fanning it into blazing rage.
And with the rage came clarity, Marta suddenly aware of each Breath within her body. There were the usual three all humans were born with, one in the center of the chest to representing the Body, the second in the middle of the forehead for the Mind, and the third at the crown of the head signifying the Soul. But in that moment of clarity, Marta could feel a fourth Breath nestled deep in her chest next to the Body. Were she not so angry, she might have been surprised to find it, to feel it thrumming with its own frequency. It had a resonance, a musical identity all its own that only she could hear.
So she inhaled, filling that Breath with both her air and anger.
The fourth Breath stirred, summoned by Marta’s will and obeying on her exhale. Though its base remained firmly in her chest, she felt it elongate as it stretched through her throat and out towards her mouth. The appendage was entirely new to her, but it felt natural as she experienced each sensation through this fresh limb: the light scrape as it edged over her teeth, the sudden coolness of the air outside her body; the crunch of her brother’s bones as it collided with his nose.
This story is about friendship and relationship triangles, love and protection, love and understanding, and love and true love.
Excerpt One:
By the time I get back to dancing with Dean, I feel something, someone, watching me. The feeling I felt before my speech is stronger now. There’s something consuming my surroundings—an invisible, sweltering blanket over me. As soon as I have the chance, I look around and try to find the source of this feeling—the burning eyes I can’t see, yet, but I sense are focused on me.
I casually scan the room between dips and twirls.
My breath catches. There they are—the eyes I’ve been searching for. A man, a gorgeous man, in a perfectly tailored suit is staring at me. It’s no mistake. Now that I see him, I know his eyes are the source of this feeling I’ve been having.
There are worse people to have stare at you. He might be a little older, but he’s very attractive. He wears his dark brown hair slicked and styled up and back. It looks soft enough to run my fingers through and short enough to create a little edge to it. His blackish gray suit blends in with his olive, tan skin. Every part of him is dark and smoky, except his eyes. His turquoise-blue eyes are so bright; they’re like headlights shining at me. A lighthouse warning me not to come too close or my boat will crash.  - Chapter 2
Erin Lockwood grew up in Castro Valley, California, and attended the University of Oregon where she graduated with a degree in journalism in 2003. From there, she moved to Denver, Colorado, and spent the next seven years searching for the love of her life and building the family of her dreams.
It wasn’t long until, with children starting preschool and more time on her hands, Erin refocused on her career, beginning with a successful entry into the world of residential real estate as a realtor. Free time was spent reading book after book—and binge-watching the subsequent films—in the New Adult genre. Hopelessly in love with her husband, she wrote him a short story for their fifth wedding anniversary. That’s when she discovered her tireless passion to share her experience of falling in love through fictional characters. That story evolved into the first novel in the Angles Trilogy.
Erin still lives in Denver with her husband, Phil, and their three children. They spend most of their summers and holidays on the beautiful island of Coronado where Erin and Phil wish to retire someday.
Talking with Author E M Thomas
Tell us about yourself:
I am a thirty-something with a passion for writing.  I had a blast penning The Bulls of War (along with the rest of my novels) in addition to my full-time job, and I’ve been especially fortunate to enjoy both very much.  I have a lovely wife and an adorable one year-old son who seemingly grows more precocious every passing day.  Digging up the time to be a worker, writer, husband, and father isn’t the easiest, but it’s the life I’ve chosen!
What was your first book?
My first book was (is?) The Bulls of War, Book 1 of the Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones.
Describe your first break.
Getting the chance to work with a veteran editors in the fantasy industry has been my best break to date.  Just getting to pick his brain on this is a privilege and immeasurably helpful at this stage in my career.
What is your favorite genre to read? To write?
I primarily write fantasy and historical fiction, and those are certainly my favorite fiction categories.  I’ve said it before, but I think it’s really important to not only write in the categories you like to read, but to really study why it is that you like certain subject areas.
Are Happy Endings a must in your stories?
No – in fact, the golden rule is only that I am happy at the end of the story.  J
What makes a protagonist interesting?
Flaws (nobody believes a person exists without them), sacrifice (no one cares about a story unless there’s something to lose), and realistic responses to the same (none of the foregoing matter if there are no consequences).
What is the best thing about being a writer?
The ability to bring old worlds back to life or create all-new ones.  As you might expect, my favorite genres are historical fiction and fantasy…
What is the worst thing?
There never being enough time in the day to get everything written!  Seriously, there is no more helpless feeling than having a story dancing around in your brain with no immediate means to put pen to paper.
Pantser or plotter?
Plotter, though it depends on the moment.  Generally, I’ve had an easier go of it once I committed to what’s called the “snowflake method” in terms of storyboarding a manuscript.  I won’t go into great detail about the approach, but it provides such depth and flexibility, that leaping back into the story is the easy part; the harder part, as always, is carving out time for writing in midst of a face-paced life.
What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.
The first full-length book to follow The Bulls of War will be Fortress of the Sun, a historical fiction about ancient Greece – specifically, the battle of Corinth in the third century B.C. Fortress takes place within a larger historical arc for which I intend to write several more volumes. A sample is available on my website, for those interested.
In the nearer term, I will be releasing short stories set in the world of Andervold.  I’m excited about these, as they will add several point of views to some of the events that took place in Bulls, to go along with some unrelated stand-alone tales from Andervold.
Bulls, of course, is only Book I of the Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones, and its sequels are fully fleshed out and ready to go. Whether I continue to alternate between releasing fantasy and historical fiction is tough to answer; either way, I truly believe fans of Bulls will equally enjoy Fortress and vice versa.
Just for fun
Cat or dog person?
Cat
Favorite food?
Any and everything BBQ
Favorite book?
I’ll begin with the standard cliché, “there are so many great ones, I can’t pick just one…”, and move on from there.  On the non-fiction (and non-primary source) side, Empires of the Sea stands preeminent in my mind, which is a simply riveting tale of the Mediterranean World in the 16th century.  It focuses on the brutal and protracted showdown between the Spanish and Ottoman Empires, complete with a recounting of the Siege of Malta and the Battle of Lepanto.  I love hopelessly outnumbered last stands, and the tale of Malta is without a doubt one for the ages.
On the fiction side, it’s a toss-up between Shogun by James Clavell and Steven Pressfield’s Gates of Fire.  I recognize these are not in the realm of literary classics, but since this question covers pure enjoyment, I’m sticking with these two novels.  Both are stunning historical epics (especially the former, in terms of length) and redefined what the historical fiction genre meant to me; this is to say nothing, of course, of the endlessly interesting time periods in which their stories take place (the 16th century Japanese “Warring States” Period (Shogun) and the Greco-Persian wars (Gates of Fire)).
Favorite movie?
Pulp Fiction.
Favorite holiday?
National Pet Day
Would you rather be the princess or the villain? Why?
Probably the villain.  Antiheroes are all the rage these days, right?
Who has more fun, orcs or hobbits?
Hobbits – orcs don’t have the requisite consciousness for fun.
Excerpt One:
Ten years, two months and this morning, Kyrus thought, blinking away drops of sweat.   Yet still… still it’s not any easier.
For the thousandth time, his hand slid to a blade’s hilt, body braced against a gust ripping through the sweltering berry thicket.  Wide eyes scanned the crush of steamy greenery all around him, ears hearing only his own short breaths and a heart that pounded like a drum.  Even as the wind petered out, his anxiety held firm, held him frozen in place.
Ten bloody years of this… a wonder I’ve any wits left about me at all.  He grunted.  Or do I have any?
He’d grayed since then, since his first days in Valogar.  Wrinkled too.  Bones ached from the constant marching, mind frayed from the perpetual fear of knowing they were out there, somewhere, always itching to add another Rokhish scalp to their belts…
Excerpt One:
‘Cold?’
‘Yeah, it is rather parky, darlin’.’
You gaped at me, as if you’d been expecting me to speak some strange Blood Lifer tongue and not the Queen’s English. Like you hadn’t assumed I’d sound…human. Then you gathered yourself together. ‘Here,’ you led the way to a sheltered trio of arches. ‘Better?’
‘Almost like I wasn’t starkers.’
You gave a tight smile.
I leant against a column, as I had a gander back at the silhouette of the great house, its steep terrace, the wood encircling it beyond and the drive sweeping down to it, between the dark sentinels of oaks.
In some screwed up world, this was the worst Jane Austen scene ever.
Well, maybe not ever…
You were giving me these quick, surreptitious looks. ‘This is, like, fried.’
I shrugged. After the year I’d had, this new twist to my existence had some dead stiff competition in the fried department.
You edged closer. ‘You don’t have to look so scared; I’m not gonna scoop ya.’
I raised my eyebrow. ‘Good to know.’
That flummoxed you.
You ran your fingers nervously through your ash blonde hair, which hung in a bob to your shoulders. I had the sudden thought of how soft it’d feel on my lips…and then wanted to scrub my brains out.
 I haven’t long been alone - utterly, truly alone - since my first death. Since I lost the only person, who mattered to me in this brutish world, I feel too easily.
Us Blood Lifers do that; every emotion is amplified.
 ‘I didn’t want…one of those broken things. Though you’ve gotta be soft making trouble for daddy. He’s the one, who’s insisting I buy one of you. He’s eager for me to learn about the business now I’m back. It’s not like I want…’ Embarrassed, you looked away.
‘Don’t worry, I wouldn’t want me either.’
‘Naw, it’s just…I’ve never even looked after a dog before.’
‘Lucky I’m not a mutt then.’
EXCERPTS (Please choose only ONE to use with your post):
Excerpt One:
Lance Colburn sat across from the two attorneys with what was probably a totally forlorn expression on his face. His own lawyer, Edgar, held a fist pressed against his mouth, coughing and shifting in his chair. Lance wanted to reach over the desk and punch him. Hard. This was the worst day of his damn life. After today, nothing would ever be the same again. One minute he’s a contented bachelor and a successful business owner. The next? He’s the sole guardian of two young kids. One may not even be out of diapers. The nickname alone was enough to make him grimace. Who calls their kid Turd? Jesus H!
He sat back in his chair, staring at the floor dumbstruck. A snicker finally escaped one of the men, causing him to look up, and he didn’t have to guess whose mouth it had come from. He shot Edgar a glare. “There is not a damn thing amusing about any of this. Are you absolutely sure there is no one else she trusted to do this job? My sister never said a word about this decision to me.”
His older sister, Gail, had recently succumbed to breast cancer. She had fought a losing battle with it for years. To make matters worse, her husband, Dale, had been killed two years before in Afghanistan while serving in the military. Dale had been adopted by an older couple, also now deceased. Lance and Gail’s own parents had passed not far apart about four years prior. Shit. The sudden reality that he had no family left hit hard and saddened him. There really was no other family guardian but him to take the kids. He glanced at the uncomfortable attorney who’d traveled all the way to Alaska to relay the grim news after the man had found out over the phone how long it’d been since Lance had spoken to Gail.
The man swallowed and said, “I’m very sorry for your loss and this obvious surprise, Mr. Colburn. It certainly was never meant to be. I had papers drawn up and asked her for your information to send them for your approval and signature quite a long time ago. I even offered to call you myself on multiple occasions. I swear, on my firm’s good name, that I had no idea there was still a question of guardianship. Are you insinuating that you’re unwilling to take the children?”
What? Now Lance was pissed. “I’m not insinuating anything, damn it! But what the hell am I supposed to do with two small kids out here in this wilderness? It’s all I can do to take care of myself sometimes. I work at a frantic pace through three seasons of the year for twelve-plus hours a day. I’m a loner, I’m selfish, and I don’t know squat about kids. And what the hell kind of names are Trixie and Turd? One is a stripper name, and the other is…just wrong!”
His lawyer and friend, Ed, finally turned his head and faked a coughing fit, although it was too obvious that he was laughing. The fucker.
His sister’s lawyer, who possessed much more tact and was taking the situation as serious as it certainly was, spoke calmly. “The boy’s name is actually Turek.”
Lance just sat blinking at the man for a minute and then threw up his hands. He said sarcastically, “Oh, what a relief. That name changes everything. Now I just have to worry about him getting smacked around a little on the school playground but not so much his head mashed into a big steaming pile of moose shit!”
Edgar, the asshole, snorted. “The name isn’t an issue, Lance. Sounds kind of like an Inuit name to me. Don’t you think you’re overreacting a bit here?”
“Fuck you, Ed. Some friend you are. How can you sit there and laugh? My sister just died, damn it!”
“I’m not amused by your sister’s passing, and you know that. I just… You’re my friend, and I know you. The picture of two little ones dropped at your doorstep, and you, the quintessential bachelor, suddenly in the role of father, is what I find amusing. It’s your damn squirmin’ that’s funny, but I know you, and you’ll figure this out and do the right thing by them and your sister.” Ed was wearing a gentler smile now.
Lance looked at the two men. “There’s no one here to help me care for them. There’s no daycare and one grade school. What the hell am I supposed to do?”
While trying to keep a straight face, Ed said, “Maybe get a wife? Raymond Mullett got himself a mail-order bride. Worked out pretty well for him. I drew up the papers myself.”
Lance stood and scoffed. “When you two get serious and come up with a suitable idea for everyone involved, call me. I am not able or in any position to care for two kids.”
His sister’s lawyer said, “A friend of your sister’s has agreed to keep the children for a month. After that, they will have to go into the child-welfare system for foster care and adoption if you don’t agree to take them. They could then be split up for life, which could result in irreparable emotional harm. These children are your blood relatives, Mr. Colburn. Think about that.”
The lawyer pushed a business card toward him.
Lance snatched it and walked out the door, grumbling that he needed some time to think. And he was deep in it when he walked to his truck. He was about to turn thirty, and he was happy with his life in Nome. He’d always been different, adventurous, curious, and like a kind of tumbleweed in his youth. He’d slid through high school, started college to appease his parents, hated it, dropped out, and finally argued with his parents until everyone was miserable.
In the end, he’d done his family a favor by leaving home to find himself. His need for adventure had led him to the Last Frontier—Alaska—where he’d met a few people and gone to work for a petroleum company in Anchorage. When he was twenty-two, he met a man who saw potential in him and hired him as an apprentice in his construction business. He had liked the work, building something out of nothing. He’d grasped it easily, staying for several years and learning the business from the bottom up.
Nome—and the state of Alaska, for that matter—were both growing and in need of construction contractors in both the private and business sectors. Lance had saved his money, taken the leap, and moved. He’d slowly started his small business, amassed good workers and suppliers, and maintained a good reputation. His business had grown fairly quickly, and he was now proud to call himself and the business successful. He loved what he did for a living. A couple of years ago, he had even purchased some land and had just finished building a three-bedroom cabin of his own.
Until today, he’d considered himself as settled as he wanted to be at this time in his life.
How the hell could this be happening, and why hadn’t his sister talked to him about an important matter like this? She hadn’t even told him the cancer was back. He heard a voice calling him and turned as he was about to start his truck.
His sister’s lawyer ran up to him, holding an envelope. “I forgot to give you this. It’s from Gail. Might explain some things. I haven’t read it.”
Carmen DeSousa writes stories brimming with romance, suspense, a hint of humor sometimes and, of course, a few Kleenex moments. After all, what would a great story be without an emotional event setting the stage? All of her novels are sensual, but not erotic, gripping but not graphic and will make you cry, laugh, love, and hope.
Although her Creatus series clearly include supernatural beings, the paranormal dances on the edge of make believe. Carmen hopes that as you read, you'll wonder, "Hmmm...what if?"
Sheriff Seth Langston is head over heels for local wild child Jessie McAllen and has been for years. The trouble is she has eyes only for Seth’s rodeo star brother, Chase. Even though he considers Jessie his girl, Chase is an incorrigible ladies’ man with a wandering eye and no chance of settling down soon.
Jessie is ready to move away from Cattle Creek to put her feelings for Chase behind her, but after she shares a white-hot kiss with Seth, things get a little complicated. Jessie realizes her heart should have been his all along. And in the face of sudden tragedy, they’ll discover if their newfound passion will tear the Langston men apart or make the family stronger than ever. . . .
Excerpt One:
Jessie sat at the end of the building farthest from the door. Her breathing had returned to normal and her head was down as she contemplated only heaven knew what. Her hands were braced her on her knees, and her hat was pulled low over her eyes.
Seth didn’t need to see them. He knew what color they were, had memorized it long ago—storm-cloud gray and just as dangerous, with dark rings around their irises that made them look twice as big as they really were and sooty lashes that should have belonged to a brunette.
“Jessie?” he said softly. It was the voice he used when talking to frightened mares and skittish colts and red-haired angels who had fallen from grace.
She didn’t look up, just raised her arms out in front of her, wrists lax, hands dangling, anger spent. “I’ll go peacefully. Just get it over with, Seth. Handcuff me and take me to jail.”
Handcuff her.
Now, there was an image Seth could’ve lived without.
He swallowed hard.
Despite his brother’s tomcat morals, and the fact that he didn’t deserve . . .
Well, despite everything that Chase didn’t deserve, including the sassy redhead, Jessie was Chase’s girl. Always had been. Always would be.
“I just want to talk to you about what happened tonight.”
She dropped her hands back to her lap and shrugged. But he still couldn’t see her face, couldn’t read what was going on inside that pretty little head of hers.
Uh-hum . . . did he say pretty? He’d meant . . . well, he’d meant something else, that was all.
