YEAR OF LIVING BLONDE

by Andrea Simonne
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A funny and sizzling romp about discovering your inner pin-up girl...
Plain-Jane bakery owner Natalie Anderson has always followed the recipe for a safe life. When her husband dumps her for a seductive older woman, it’s time to throw out that recipe and start from scratch. She cooks up a plan to transform herself from mousy brown to sexy blonde. Meanwhile, she’s trying to expand her Seattle bakery, La Dolce Vita, but runs into an obstacle in the form of her irritatingly handsome landlord.
Astronomer Anthony Novello’s good looks and charm usually guarantees him a free pass with women, though that’s not the case with his new tenant, Natalie. Plain, plump, and persnickety—he’s never met a woman more annoying. But when Anthony returns from a telescope observing run, he makes a discovery of the non-celestial kind. Natalie has changed. He’s amazed to find himself attracted to her. Sparks fly as he tries to convince her there’s more to him than meets the eye.
However, when Natalie’s ex-husband decides to win her back, she’s forced to choose. Is her year of living blonde over? Or is this the start of a new and much sweeter life….
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:

Natalie grins. “And what is this I hear about my cookies in Hawaii?”

Anthony rolls his eyes in mock exasperation. “All right, I admit it. I took a dozen with to Mauna Kea.”

“I’m honored.”

 “You should be. It was right after you called me an asshole and I didn’t want go back into the bakery, so I had to ask Maya to buy them for me.”

 Natalie shifts uncomfortably. “I apologized for that. Should I apologize again?”

 “It can’t hurt.”

 “I’m sorry.”

He doesn’t say anything, just puts new coordinates into his telescope’s keypad.

 “Can I ask you something?” she asks.

 “Sure.”

 She bites her lip. “Why do you like me?”

 Anthony continues what he’s doing, a smile playing around the edges of his mouth. “What makes you think I like you?”

“Because you invited me here tonight. What is it you see in me, exactly?”

 “I don’t know.” He attaches the keypad back to the telescope. “In truth, I’ve wondered about it myself.”

“What kind of answer is that?”

 Anthony chuckles. “I’m just being honest. You’re not exactly easy to get along with.”

 “I’m not sure why I’m always giving you such a hard time.”

 “I am.”

“Why is that?”

 “It’s because you’re into me.”

Natalie’s face grows warm. “No, I’m not.”

 His hand is still on the telescope. He gazes over at her. “Yeah, you are.”

“I’m not.”

 Anthony lets go and moves closer. She can smell him again, his woodsy soap. He’s taller than her and she has to look up at him.

 “I’m not into you,” she insists, though her pulse quickens.

Their eyes meet. He’s so near now, she can see the dark fringe of his lashes. The stubble of his beard. She shivers with anticipation.

 “Yeah, you are, but it’s okay,” he says softly, leaning close, “because I’m into you, too.”

 And then he kisses her. Natalie is dizzy with shock.

 Anthony is kissing me!

BLURB:

She’s the other sister…

 Overshadowed by the beauty of her older sister, Lillian is better known as the other Tisdale; unremarkable and unsure how she will ever deliver on the promise of her family's name.

 He’s a rake in need of reforming…

 Will Colton leads a frivolous existence, embracing notoriety instead of managing his family’s fortune. Determined to forget his financial burden and his father’s growing resentment, he maintains a lifestyle dedicated to pleasure and self-indulgence. When Will is invited to the Tisdale estate for an extended holiday, he never expects to become friends with the forgettable Lillian. But when a family secret comes to light, he must choose between leaving London and protecting the honor of one woman or staying and risking the reputation of another.

 Upon his return, Will finds the girl he left behind has come out of the shadows and into her own. Lillian’s finally the center of attention, and not all of it good. With his own reputation in tatters, can a reformed rake lure her out of the hands of London's bachelors and back into his own arms? Can he escape his past and reclaim her heart, or has he lost her forever?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
He didn’t try and crawl out of the hole he’d so easily dug for himself. Rather, instead of making an already awkward situation worse, he smiled. It was a cavalier sort of smile—one that she just knew he’d used hundreds of times before to get him out of this sort of trouble. Women were undoubtedly willing to forgive him most transgressions just by a flash of this winning grin.
Lord knew she was.
She’d never before met anyone so handsome, so charming, so…
A bolt of pain shot up her arm, as if God himself was punishing her for having such immoral thoughts.
“Enough,” he said. “We need to get you in front of a doctor. The sooner, the better.”
 “Good idea,” she agreed. “How do you suggest we go about doing that?”
 “First, we’ll need to secure your arm.”
She nodded. “You mean fashion a sling? I’m sure there’s something around here that we could use as rope. Perhaps ivy? There’s a great deal of it about the estate.”
 His hand flew up to his chest. “What do you take me for, some sort of bushman? For heaven’s sake, I’m from Grosvenor Square, not some jungle. I wouldn’t have the slightest idea of how to go about accomplishing something like that.”
 Lilly bit her lip. She’d never make it being jostled about without something to steady her arm. “Did you have something else in mind, then?”
 Mr. Colton started removing his jacket. “I thought I’d use my shirt. I’ll rip some strips off of it and make the sling out of that.”
 “Your shirt,” she repeated, suddenly questioning if she’d indeed suffered a head injury along with her broken arm.
 He tossed the jacket to the ground behind him. “Yes.”
 She was confused. “But then what will you wear?”
He was unfastening his waistcoat. “Nothing, I suppose .”
Tell us about yourself:
I’m a radio announcer by trade – disc jockey, really. But don’t tell my fellow announcers that I said that. These days we call ourselves everything from a personality to the talent to a jock. Either way, it’s so much more than listening to songs and going to concerts. And though I’ve primarily been on-air I have also worked as a radio station programmer, music director as well as working in the production department making commercials. I think I enjoy that most as it usually involves writing. Through the years I’ve sort of taken the reigns, teaching salespeople how to properly write copy for the ear and have written hundreds or radio ads. I love the creative process and the writing part just seemed to come easy. I’m also a wife, mom and even a grandmother. My grandson just turned three and he’s my heart.
What was your first book?
I actually had a winning entry that made it into a compilation book – Memories of Mother. I was thrilled to see my short story make into print. From there I was inspired to keep going and started other projects, but Heart-Shaped Stone is my first full length completed novel.
Describe your first break.
This might be it, haha. Oh, still humbly waiting for that. Meanwhile, just glad for the response I’ve had to my writing.
What is your favorite genre to read? To write?
I do love a good love story, but I’d say a mixed genre, such as Romance Suspense, would be right there at the top of the list. I’d say the same about writing. I think you’re attracted to that thing you love the most.
Are Happy Endings are must in your stories?
No, that sounds terribly boring. I think an intriguing ending is a must.
What makes a protagonist interesting?
Her (barely there) flaws. I don’t go for the fluffy talk, the ravishingly beautiful by day, drop dead sexy by night, nearly perfect in every way kind of persona. I prefer real. I think women can relate to a woman who does not easily see her flaws, she knows they’re there, but it’s pretty obvious to everyone else. We girls love to rescue men, but I think we also tend to try to rescue each other – from ourselves. I made sure my protagonist was that kind of friend.
What is the best thing about being a writer?
The alone time, when you’re sitting there in your perfect setting and “communing” with your story and you just feel it clicking.
What is the worst thing?
Introducing your work to the world – both on a promotional level and on a fear of rejection level. There’s something to be said about how safe and secure your work feels tucked away somewhere in your computer.
Pantser or plotter?
Apparently it’s panster! The only thing I “plotted” was that it was going to be a love story. Although I had a general idea about that, the writing process for Heart-Shaped Stone really showed me that it’s okay to just let it happen. I will always write like that in the future.
What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.
 There is a follow up in the works to this book. There has to be, read it and you will see!
Just for fun
Cat or dog person?
Both. Although if I was single I’d very easily find myself living in a small apartment with three cats, no doubt.
Favorite food?
Popcorn
Favorite book?
The right answer (for me) is The Bible. As for novel, I would have to say Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. The book is a living, breathing, delicious adventure.
Favorite movie?
I still cannot help but watch it every time it comes on TV, it’s mesmerizing - Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Favorite holiday?
Christmas
Would you rather be the princess or the villain? Why?
Princess, but one that lives in that house over by the river
Who has more fun, orcs or hobbits?
Hobbits
BLURB:
Caila, like most dreamers, just wants to be wanted. Unlike most dreamers, she's wanted by the CIA. When the last decade of thirty-two year old Caila Domenici’s life disappears, destroyed in a car accident, she is forced to begin again. Defying doctor’s orders to slow-go-it, she sets out to navigate the world on her own. It's not going well. Coddled from birth, everything from a bus schedule to how to boil water confounds her. Worse yet, she's about to accept her meddling mother's offer to pay for food and rent. With just a hunch her talents extend beyond that of daughter of privilege, Caila searches for her past. Before she can find it, it finds her. And the handsome azure-eyed stranger who’s saying he knows her is somehow part of it. Caila always believed there had to be more, but now, on the verge of discovering the truth, she must decide which is worse – never knowing who she really is, or knowing too much.
EXCERPT:
Reese was being too nice. Something was up - their deep conversation the night before, the bubble bath, the tea, turning down her bed and now breakfast? Caila wasn’t suspicious by nature, and in most cases trusted more than she should, but where Reese was concerned she dropped all pretenses and questioned his every move. He was much too calculating to not see opportunity in everything he did. Caila recognized that in him right away. Her mind was now churning with theories. Why, if he was up to something, would he be so blatant with this sudden kindness? Did he think she would not notice?
Then she imagined the most unexpected thing.
Maybe he wasn’t up to anything at all. Maybe this was another side to the man she detested right from the start. The invader, the man who came to make her life a living hell and push aside her father may not, after all, be the man she believed him to be. But even that theory was short lived. No, she thought, he has a motive.
The Brothers' Keepers Author Interview & Giveaway
2/19/2015
Picture
Tell us about yourself:
What was your first book?
My first book is called CONVERSATIONS AMONG RUINS. It is a psychological thriller. Here is a brief description:
CONVERSATIONS AMONG RUINS is a portrait of a descent into madness, and the potential of finding salvation there.
While in detox, Daniel Stavros, a young, dual diagnosed* professor meets and falls in love with the cryptic Mimi Dexter. But Mimi has secrets and, strangely, a tattoo identical to a pendant Daniel’s mother gave him right before she died.
Drawn together by broken pasts, they pursue a twisted, tempestuous romance. When it ends, a deteriorating Stavros seeks refuge at a mountain cabin where a series of surreal experiences brings him face to face with something he’s avoided all his life: himself.
Though miles away, Mimi’s actions run oddly parallel to Daniel’s. Will either be redeemed, or will both careen toward self-destruction?
*The term dual diagnosed refers to someone suffering from a mood disorder (e.g., depression) and chemical dependency.
That having been said, THE BROTHERS’ KEEPERS is a close second. Both books were published last year.
Describe your first break.
My first break came in the form of a contract from All Things That Matter Press to publish CONVERSATIONS AMONG RUINS in July 2014. A contract from MuseItUp Publishing for THE BROTHERS’ KEEPERS was offered in November of 2014.
What is your favorite genre to read? To write?
My favorite genre to read is literary fiction, while my favorite genre to write is thriller/mystery. I’m sort of the opposite of Toni Morrison, who reads mysteries while writing literary fiction. I read literary fiction while writing thrillers/mysteries.
Are Happy Endings are must in your stories?
No. I strive for a certain amount of realism in my writing, and happy endings don’t always apply.
What makes a protagonist interesting?
What makes a protagonist interesting is a certain level of intellect along with some fatal character flaw.
What is the best thing about being a writer?
The best part of being a writer is having people read my books. I love getting feedback from readers and hearing how they enjoyed (or didn’t) the story. I try to answer every question I get, because to me, it’s all about the reader.
What is the worst thing?
The worst part of being a writer, and this is true with regard to several professions, is that you can never really leave it at the end of the day (or over the weekend). Words are constantly on my mind, and I sometimes have a difficult time taking a break from them.
Pantser or plotter?
Plotter, plotter, plotter. Oh, did I mention, I’m a plotter J That having been said, I leave enough room for spontaneous things to happen, because often the best writing takes place while you are writing, and not planning. Also, I think it depends on what you write. Thrillers/mysteries almost necessitate a good deal of plotting ahead of time, where other genres and types of fiction may lend themselves better to the pantser approach.
What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.
Currently, I’m working on the next book in the Nicholas Branson series. Branson and Jessica Jones will be back for another high-stakes thriller, with another historical mystery/puzzle to solve.
Just for fun
Cat or dog person?
Until a few years ago, I would have considered myself a dog person and left it at that. But over the past few years I had the privilege of having the greatest white, short-haired cat, one that was sensitive to my every mood and stuck by me no matter what. Her name was Isabelle. Unfortunately, she had to be put to sleep last month. I am still mourning the loss.
Favorite food?
Pizza. Yes, I believe that pizza is the perfect food. A close second is anything my girlfriend cooks. Did I get that right, dear? I think I know where I’ll be sleeping tonight L
Favorite book?
Dostoevsky’s CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.
Favorite movie?
I’m going old-school here,  and changing the pace, but I have to say THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I mean, what’s not to like about that movie? I find it hard to be depressed when watching that film—in fact, it is one of my secret weapons against depression. Disney movies are a close second.
Favorite holiday?
Christmas. I adore Christmas. In fact, I’m one of those lunatics who keeps his tree up as long as humanly possible, until it’s reduced in size and shape to something you’d see on CHARLIE BROWN.
Would you rather be the princess or the villain? Why?
Definitely the villain J Because I’d have a hard time being a princess ;-)
Who has more fun, orcs or hobbits?
Hobbits! Hobbits rule!
BLURB:
Most of us are familiar with Jesus’ parents, Mary and Joseph, and Jesus’ purported spouse, Mary Magdalene. But what about Jesus’ siblings? What role did they play in early Christianity?
Contemporary Jesuit and renowned religious historian Nicholas Branson is about to find out…and the answer will shake the foundations of the Judeo-Christian world.
It all starts with the murder of a United States Senator in a confessional, and the discovery of a strange religious document among his possessions. At the urging of his FBI friend, Branson joins the investigation. His effort to uncover the truth behind the murder draws him into the search for an eight-hundred-year-old treasure and into a web of ecclesiastical and political intrigue.
Accompanied by a beautiful, sharp-tongued research librarian, Jessica Jones, Branson follows a trail of clues, from the peaks of the awe inspiring French Pyrenees to the caves of war-torn Afghanistan. Along the way, shadowy powerful forces trail the pair, determined to keep safe a secret buried for centuries.
Excerpt One:
Father Rawlings drained his cup and set it on the table. “What I’m about to tell you may sound ridiculous and melodramatic. At best it will seem the stuff of conspiracy theories and spy novels. However, I assure you it is not.” He fixed Branson with a steely gaze. “As God’s soldiers, we are engaged in a battle, Nicholas. As real as any battle ever waged. The war we fight has raged for centuries, but the battle we fight now could well be the last. And we, you and I, the Roman Catholic Church as a whole, must emerge victorious. Nothing less than the foundations, the stability of the Christian world is at stake.” He smiled again, this time with bitterness.
“Of course it sounds unbelievable, even paranoid, but believe me, it is neither. I choose my words carefully. I don’t make bold assertions I cannot support. I assure you I am telling you exactly how things stand, exactly what is at stake. Before I go on, however, I must demand a pledge from you, your promise to help the Church in the epic struggle in which we currently find ourselves. We require your guarantee, your warrant if you will, that you will use all your energies, resources, and powers to secure the interests of the Church, and that you will let nothing deter you from the task at hand. With this binding agreement comes an inexhaustible supply of resources: anything and everything you deem necessary to accomplish your mission. But I must have your pledge before we proceed.” Rawlings rose from his seat, motioning for Branson to stand as well. “Before you give me your answer, listen again to Jesus’ words: ‘He who is not with me is against me.’ Nicholas Branson, tell me now: Are you with our Lord, or against Him?”
When reclusive cyborg Alistair Mechanus meets his captive, ER doctor Julia Parker, it is love at first sight--for him. While he eagerly drops his plans for World Conquest to woo her, ten years of solitude have left his social skills badly rusted. When his misguided act of kindness spirals out of control, however, Julia is forced to trust the mad genius with her life, and she discovers the vulnerable side under his armored plating. She has the skills he needs to unlock his forgotten past, but learning who he used to be may come at the cost of his remaining sanity.
Enjoy an excerpt:
Julia stopped in the doorway, pulling her hand out of Mechanus’. He turned to see what the matter was, and saw that she was looking past him, openmouthed, at the collection of plants on display. Mechanus followed her gaze in momentary confusion; he’d seen the flowers a thousand times before, and could easily look up the scientific name of every single specimen here and in the other two dozen greenhouses he had. He had detailed files about each specimen, after all.
It occurred to him that he ought to say something.
“This is...” he began. No. Not quite right. He cleared his throat. “Welcome to Greenhouse Fourteen.” There. Much better.
“I’m just... surprised you have something like this here,” Julia said. “I mean, everything else has been so...” She fell silent.
“So...?” Mechanus prompted.
“Industrialized.”
“Well, food has to come from somewhere,” he pointed out. You can only do so much by replicating proteins and complex sugars, and my chimeras don’t seem to like the nutrient slurries at all. I grow fruits and vegetables in greenhouses like this one, as well as grains and medicinal plants that I’ve gathered from all over the world.” He took her hand and led her on into the greenhouse. “For example, did you know that there are over 200 species of plant that have the potential to cure cancer?”
“I was talking about the flowers, but cancer cures are impressive, too.”
Idiot. Of course the flowers. Women liked flowers. “If you enjoy them,” he said, recovering with what he deemed sufficient grace, “I could give you one of my greenhouses. They’re self-maintaining, each with their own crew of maintenance drones who will ensure that they will remain healthy and green for the foreseeable future.”
 Forget what you think you know. How well do you really know your neighbors or fellow workers? Do you trust your boss? What about politicians? The fabric of our society is under attack. Our way of life, our livelihood, our very existence is under full assault. No one even realizes that it’s happening. Disguised as horrible natural disasters on the news, the world is caught unsuspecting as events draw us ever nearer to extinction. As “natural disasters” escalate and tensions between nations mount, one man hears a whisper. It has begun . . .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Clark gasped and dropped his fork. There they were in downtown Des Moines! Four aliens, large as life, were walking around disguised as humans. The phone device allowed him to see two images in the spot where each alien existed. The human image appeared as his eyes saw them. The alien image had a fuzzy, faded hologram-like appearance to it.

 He could see the red tinted skin with black spots on their bodies. Their heads were long like a horse’s head with narrow yellow eyes on either side. They were roughly three-feet taller than their human disguises. Their knees bent outward as they walked. Each alien wore a black skin-tight uniform. The most alarming features were the four arms each alien sported. In each case, the two unseen hands carried various gadgets that they fidgeted with as they walked.

The human disguises appeared as smiling, happy people while the Ascanti images each revealed scowling angry aliens seemingly trapped in an unpleasant form. These creatures would have won casting rolls in any Hollywood horror film.

 I can’t believe this. This can’t be happening. Everything Rick said is true. Aliens walk among us. They look so natural in their disguises. They fit in perfectly within our society. Look at them just walking up the street. That one across the street is delivering a UPS package. That one over there is carrying shopping bags, like she’s just some average housewife out on errands. This one over here is crossing the street, as if it’s perfectly okay for aliens to cross the street in Des Moines!

Clark has a secret. He’s been sneaking over to visit alien worlds for a while now. Recognizes the various aliens, knows their temperament, and gathers the gossip. What appeared to be a harmless hobby has now put him smack dab in an alien takeover because unlike everyone else he can recognize the aliens in their smiling human costumes.

This is such a fun book in the fact it combines features from some of my favorite television shows. I can imagine Rod Sterling saying, “Things are not what you think they are,” as they cut to a scene of the aliens. The ease of travel to other planets reminded me of Contact, Stargate, and The Last Starfighter. The unsuspecting hero could be a mishmash of Superman, Ghostbusters and everyman. The suspenseful story moves rapidly causing the reader to stay up past bedtime reading.

Two thumbs up for Camouflaged Encounters.

Read the rare and recently discovered real time letters between Sal, age 19, and Loretta, age 15, during the final terrifying three years of World War II, 1943-1946.

 Both from the Douglas Park neighborhood in Chicago, the two adolescents discuss with humor and candor, the Navy, war, politics, hit music, life back home and their relationship.

 Sal nicknamed Slabby for his movie star good looks, deciphers code out of the Navy’s radio shack on a minesweeper in the Pacific.

 Loretta monikered Duchess for her aloofness, lives with aunts and her widowed father, while holding day jobs and enjoying an active social life with friends.

Letters to Loretta from the Radio Shack lets you experience World War II, both in battle and on the home front, through the eyes of adolescents in a way that Hollywood has never portrayed.

Dear Loretta,
Gee, but aren't you thoughtful. By the way, every time I write a letter to you, you seem to be writing a letter back home. Isn't that a co-incidence or isn't it? I received two letters to date, so “keep em flying.”

It was just a month ago that I left and I'll be damned if I know whether it seems like a year or a week. As far as concerning you, it seems like a year. I presume you're still as sharp as a whip, you old prankster. Say, in your next letter send me a couple of pictures of yourself, one of them recently taken and you may charge it to Uncle Sam and his fleet.

So I see your stepping out now, you're really cooking with the right kind of material. Don't forget I've got a date with you when I get back home, which I hope won't be any longer than a year.

 Had a lot of fun at the rifle range this week as no doubt Joe will tell you. I still get three square meals a day, and are they square. A slice of bread with plenty of nothing.

This weather we have up here now surely reminds me of Chicago. It’s dingier than a campaign speech and it just knocks the hell out of these Californians out here. They're just used to beautiful women and mild weather, while we in Chicago are used to gales and violent women.

Do you know what? In “Frisco” the taverns close at midnight. Now isn't that a whacky thing to do?

Haven't seen many movies lately except for a few Navy films showing recent battles to get us boiled. But if we don't get our liberty Wednesday, I'll boil over like a frozen motor. They're going to keep an eye on our company while we're on liberty (now what the hell do you call liberty like that?) and if we're good we'll get one every two weeks. Very, very thoughtful, don't you think? I'll leave you know how I make out, so until then.

 Lots of love,
Slab

Letters to Loretta from the Radio Shack, A True WWII Teenage Love Story
By Laura Lynn Ashworth

Tell us about yourself:

I’m a professional writer and media relations specialist for Fortune 500 companies.  My writing and artistic ability caught the attention of teachers when I was in grade school and I just continued with it from there.   I’m an interesting combination of artsy and scientific, and I love all that is true and beautiful in this world. My life’s mission is to find true love and to write about it whenever I run into it.

What was your first book?
Letters to Loretta from the Radio Shack, A True WWII Teenage Love Story.  It was released in November 2014 around Veteran’s Day.

Describe your first break.

Within days of sending out my manuscript to publishers, I received three contract offers from traditional publishers.

What is your favorite genre to read? To write?

I love to read historical romances, but I like non-fiction too.  Therefore, my favorite thing to write are non-fiction romances.  Ha,ha…go figure.

Are Happy Endings are must in your stories?
Not necessarily.  I like realistic endings, either happy or where the main characters receive redemption or learn important life lessons.

What makes a protagonist interesting?

I think the perfect protagonist is pure in heart and an underdog, yet has the potential to be the victor despite tremendous odds against him or her.  All they have to do is believe in themselves and tell the truth.

What is the best thing about being a writer?

Self-expression through written word.  It generates a tremendous feeling of accomplishment.

What is the worst thing?

Writing is easy, making sure everything is perfect and that all the details,i.e. punctuation, spelling, etc., is the tedious and most time-consuming part.

Pantser or plotter?

I’m both, I know in my head how my story will start and end…what comes in between takes on a life of its own once I sit down to write.

What do you see the direction of your future writing taking? What can we expect next? Give us a little taste.

I know what my next two books will be already and will start the next one this summer.  It will be an anthology of romantic tales in which innocence meets shocking and outrageous realities.

Just for fun

Cat or dog person?

I love and have had them both.  I think animals are humans with furry exteriors therefore I love them all the same

Favorite food?

Chicken and vegetables

Favorite book?

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Favorite movie?
Practical Magic

Favorite holiday?

Halloween

Would you rather be the princess or the villain? Why?

I don’t know if I would like to be a princess, they seem rather shallow, but I would definitely not want to be a villain.  I could never hurt people especially by being evil.

Who has more fun, orcs or hobbits?

I’m afraid it might be orcs, because the more primitive and careless an individual is in their interactions with others, the more that easily amuses them.  Hobbits, however, deserve to have more fun.

Excerpt One:
Date: June 27

Dear Diary,
I can’t believe it. Today we moved, and I feel like I’m in a dream. I just keep walking around our new house and wondering when we will go home. It feels so different and strange.

 Everything is on one floor (that’s called a ranch house). The floors are all bare wood. My mom said our rugs would look terrible here so she let the people who bought our old house keep them. I think she was probably right. They were a dark maroon and the walls here are a light cream. I don’t think that would look good.

 I went to the bathroom three times since we got here and every time I used a differentbathroom. I can’t believe it. Three different toilets in the same house! Only my friend Susan, my rich friend, had more than two bathrooms in her house. And four bedrooms! And a family room. I can’t believe we have this much space now.

 When I look out of the windows I expect to see the shrubs and the Hudson’s house who were next to us on the left, but I don’t. Instead, I see a big open field that will probably have houses built on it by next year. That’s what my dad said anyway. And when I look out to the right I expect to see our clothesline and the Dixon’s driveway, but instead I see rose bushes and a wooden bench under a tree that the last owners said we could have.

 Tonight, we had to eat supper off paper plates and use plastic forks, knives, and spoons because our boxes are still packed. My aunt made us a big picnic basket full of food and that’s what we ate for supper. It was delicious. There was fried chicken, potato salad and potato chips, cupcakes for dessert, and fruit salad. And at the bottom of the basket under the ice was a whole package of Hershey Kisses. Yum!

My brother already started to play with a kid next door who’s about a year older than he is. He’s so lucky. I have no new friends yet and that’s the truth!

I have been a positive psychologist in private practice for the past thirty years. In the course of working with my clients, I originated the idea of THE ENCHANTED SELF(R), a positive psychology therapy where I teach people how to recognize and utilize their strengths, talents, skills and even lost potential. I have developed a number of methods, including using our memories to rediscover what is right about ourselves and our lives, rather than what went wrong, helping people to overcome adversity, experience positive emotions and live the good life!

Since developing this concept, I've been able to use many tools to bring the Enchanted Self to everyone, particularly women and girls. I've written many books, starting with THE ENCHANTED SELF, A Positive Therapy, and then Recipes for Enchantment, The Secret Ingredient is YOU!  My books for girls are very popular, as they are great fictional reads and also help deal with many of the questions that trouble kids as they move into the tween and teen years.  The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween and Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen are the first two books in this series.

BLURB:
For decades the US Marines funded a top-secret unit known as Elite Recon. A deadly group of men and women sent to infiltrate dozens of countries completely undetected. Mission objectives so extreme casualties were not only probable, but expected.

 The current batch of operatives had returned from hundreds of assignments unscathed…until one mission went horribly wrong. Several men lost their lives and the group disbanded. The remaining leathernecks were scattered in the wind with new identities. They were told to blend in. Be normal. Or face being forever silenced just like their fallen brothers.

Now, two years later, each living member of the group is kidnapped and given a chance to make things right. But this time they’re no longer under the thumb of Uncle Sam. A mysterious private backer who knows about their past has brought them back together. No longer are they forced to turn a blind eye to the lost and forsaken.

 A new life. A new future…Elite Metal.
~~~~~~~~
Bound By Steele
By Anna Alexander and Jennifer Kacey
 To save his Marine brothers and sister he must accept the past isn’t dead and buried. Reuniting survivors means he is forced to first forgive…the enemy.
 Steele, the man he was, died. A civilian with a new name stands in his place in the wake of death. Everything he had, lost when his undercover contact, Venus, disappeared when it counted most. In the shadow of regret, Steele is reborn from the flames of a Phoenix. To right the wrongs that destroyed his military family, he must put his trust in the hands of a mysterious backer, and the woman who led his team to the slaughter.
 Not knowing who sold her out at the final hour, Alayna Devlin, spent the last two years on the run. Then the mastermind behind Elite Metal tracked her down, and offered her the chance to atone for past mistakes. To cleanse her conscience requires a baptism by fire and submission to the man who will either put the final nail in her coffin or set her heart free.
 The past. The future. Truth. Lies. Nothing is as it seems when two shattered hearts are finally given the chance to heal.
 Chrome’s Salvation
By Jennifer Kacey
 A former leader of Elite Recon, reduced to nothing more than an apathetic existence.
 Chrome had it all. Exactly what he wanted. A career in the Marines he loved, fighting alongside his brothers and sisters to protect the US from everything set out to destroy it. Then on their last mission as Elite Recon they were double-crossed…and everything went horribly wrong.
 Cammie needs help rescuing her siblings from the clutches of a man determined to crush everything she holds dear.  But she has no one to turn to. No one to lean on when she’s trapped in a world she never knew existed. Lost in a world of pseudo-normalcy Chrome’s reduced to nothing more than existing. Day in. Day out. Nothing to live for.
 Until his girl’s life hangs in the balance. Now nothing will stand in his way of coming back to life.
 Love at first sight is a myth. Or so Chrome thought. Everything he thinks is true disappears in the presence…of his salvation.
 Adamantium’s Roar
 Pure Copper
By Heather Long
 Copper will do whatever it takes to get the job done, even if it means seducing and betraying the one man who really sees her.
 Former Marine special forces, Sachi “Copper” James is a chameleon. She thrives on being someone else. Her mission? Identify the rat who sold her team bad intel. Gabriel Danvers, ex-CIA analyst, is a master of disseminating the details. He wants to enjoy a normal life, retired from the game. His mission? Teach classes.
 When Gabriel becomes the target of Copper’s investigation, he re-enters a world of danger and deception--all to claim the passion of the one woman who’s haunted him for years.
 Sterling’s Seduction
By Sabrina York
 When a snoopy reporter threatens the Elite Metal, Sterling will do whatever it takes to kill her story about the team. Even if it means he has to tie her to his bed.
 When Sterling spots a reporter masquerading as a waitress in a dingy bar in Deep Ellum, he suspects she’s investigating the team. And that’s something he just cannot allow to happen. Too many lives are at stake. He will do everything in his power to learn the truth—even seduce her. And to stop her story from coming out? He might even tie her to the bed.
 Nothing is off the table when it comes to keeping his brothers safe. Nothing. It’s a damn shame she’s everything he’s ever wanted. It’s a damn shame her touch warms his cold, dead heart.
 Platinum’s Choice
But Platinum is reborn when Elijah is kidnapped, so he's left with no choice but to vanish, leaving Rose to wonder about his fate, broken-hearted.
 Rose has spent the last year getting over the disappearance of the man she knew as Eli. Now, alone and terrified, she finds herself on the run from a sniper while trying to hide a scared little boy from certain death.
 Mercury’s Poison
By Saranna DeWylde
A scarred, mad genius more monster than man must protect the beauty he's become obsessed with from a beast more terrible than himself.
 Serum 17 took his face, took his kindness and took his empathy. It took, in essence, all of John Thrace leaving only the Elite Metal operative "Mercury" in his place. A man marked with a biohazard tattoo because he knows he's incompatible with other living things. Until he becomes obsessed with the seemingly innocent doctor Hazel Brewer and a chance encounter changes everything.
 Hazel knows the giant scarred man won't hurt her even though she's in the business of saving lives and he'd rather take them. In fact, she's never felt safer or more alive than when she's with him. Even when a terrible biological weapon forces her into his arms for a night of hot passion she won't soon forget.
 Their love could be the redemption he never thought he wanted, or something even more toxic: Mercury's poison.
Bound by Steele
Pfft.
“Ah,” he grunted and slapped at the dart embedded into his neck.
 Who tracked him down? Russian intelligence? Red Wolf? Or was the US government ready to make sure he was a mistake that never came back to haunt them?
 Adrenaline shot whatever drug they loaded him up with through his blood stream like a rocket, and instantly his body went heavy as though sand filled his veins. His knees were gave way as the bone had been replaced by Slinkies. He bobbed and stumbled into the railing.
 Stay calm. Stay the fuck calm.
 “It’s best if you don’t resist us, Steele,” said the tallest of the trio. Other than the height difference, the three looked like triplets in matching wetsuits and face masks.
 American accent? So, he was being called home.
 “What? You thought I’d make this easy for you?” he sputtered past numb lips and inched back, searching for a way to escape.
 At this point it was looking as if the only option was over the railing to the open ocean below. If he was limp enough, he might be able to pop to the surface like a cork. If not, well…
 “We’ve come to collect you.”
 “Really? I’m no fucking postage stamp.”
 With the last of his energy, he swung his leg around with a roundhouse kick, knocking the front man into his buddy behind him. Spots floated in his vision as he threw a right hook followed by an upper cut. From the sounds of grunting and a gasp of pain, he knew he connected with something, but he couldn’t tell what.
 Two pairs of hands latched on to his arms and pulled him to the ground.
 “Nice to see he hasn’t lost his spirit,” one of them said. “Even doped up, he still packs a bunch. Damn, I think he broke a tooth.”
 “You’re so dead,” he slurred as the world went black. Either the ghosts put a bag over his head or the drugs victoriously sucked him under. “Dead, you… mother…”
Heather Long
National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them; you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.
BLURB:
Country music star Jessie Grant has it all. An amazing voice, a string of multi-platinum albums, and a sold-out concert tour. But just before her Hearts on Fire tour rolls into Las Vegas, her lead guitarist is badly injured and is unable to play. Desperate to find a replacement before the night of a televised live show, Jessie is forced to accept help from the last person on earth she wants to see again.
 Drew Carmichael has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the best up-and-coming musicians in Nashville, without cashing in on his renowned father’s name. When Jessie’s manager calls and asks him to fill in for her band’s injured guitar player, he agrees to help Jessie out even though she cut him out of her life four months ago.
 In Sin City, sparks fly between Jessie and Drew, and it isn’t long before they give in to their mutual attraction. But when the dark past Jessie has successfully hidden for ten years explodes in the media, their tenuous bond is put to the test, and both Jessie and Drew must learn to trust each other if they don’t want their newfound romantic relationship to go up in flames.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
Jessie Grant stared at the cheery yellow wall in her dressing room, and fought the overwhelming urge to throw something. Anything. Her agitated gaze fell on the lovely vase of flowers that had been delivered just before the show, and she had to remind herself that violence, especially towards a perfectly innocent bouquet of pink roses and white calla lilies, wouldn’t solve anything.

But then again, it might relieve the tension that was coiled inside of her like a tightly wound spring.

 “Calm down.”

 “Calm down?” Jessie whirled around and met the exasperated eyes of her manager. “You expect me to calm down when my guitar player, who, unbeknownst to me, was half-wasted during our set, and decided to stage dive into the audience.” She pointed a finger at him. “That broken arm of his isn’t gonna to heal in four days. I need another guitar player, and I need one now.”

 “Relax,” Wally Lindell said in a soothing voice. “I’m working on it.”

 “How are you working on it?”

 She propped her hands on her hips and gave him her best glacial stare. It didn’t faze him. It never did. He’d been her manager since she was fifteen years old, and he knew her better than anyone. So he should have known that she would be totally freaked out about losing her lead guitar player four days before her exclusive gig in Las Vegas, after all, he was the one who had dubbed her a perfectionist.

 “I put in a call to Drew.”

 Jessie’s already churning stomach lurched wildly. “Drew Carmichael?”

 “How many other guitar players named Drew do you know?” Wally shot her a wise-ass grin.

 Only one.

 “So you talked to him?” she asked, as she moved to the make-up table. She picked up the bottle of water her stylist had left out for her and took a sip. Maybe the simple task would soothe her frayed nerves.

 It didn’t even come close.

 “What did he say?”

 “I left him a message. He hasn’t called me back yet.” Wally shoved his hands into the front pockets of his black jeans and looked her straight in the eyes with an unflinching directness.

 She’d seen that look before; the one telling her that while she might be the star, he was the one who’d gotten her there, and before she went off half-cocked, she’d better let him have his say. And of course, she would. She respected Wally far too much not to listen to him.

 “He’s the only guitar player we can get on such short notice that knows your set list,” he continued. “I don’t know what happened between the two of you, but whatever it is, you need to put it aside for the sake of this gig, and maybe the rest of the tour.”

 “What makes you think something happened?” she asked with feigned nonchalance.

 It was best not to let anyone, especially Wally, know how much she cared about Drew.

 “Because you two were as thick as thieves last spring, and now it’s like he’s dropped off the face of the earth. Did you have a falling out?”

 “No.” Jessie scowled, as she returned the bottle to the table. “We didn’t have a falling out. I’ve been on the road for months now and he…he’s got a life.”

A life that didn’t include her.
